So the chief of police should issue the following statement at the start of the next city council meeting:

"So as not to intimidate or influence the city council and mayor in any way as they discuss this important matter the police security detail is now going to remove themselves from the building. Have a nice day."

It's what Marc Rich and Bill Browder did in post-Soviet Russia. Not eliminating cops but sending unarmed 'outreach' people first to most calls.

My impression is that cops might be more than happy to have other agencies lead the way on some sorts of calls, like send social workers to domestics and psych teams to psych calls, adjusters to auto accidents. Schools can use their counselors for rowdy kids, etc.

I dunno... Albuquerque, of all places, had the lowest crime rates of recent years when its police force went on strike. The Chief went on the radio saying "We cannot protect you. You must do for yourself."

Police complaints dropped to almost zero.

I wonder if the hardware stores reported an upswing of sales of picks and shovels. There's an awful lot of desert around that town, you know.
