Glasspack you say? I need to look into that. My generator is crazy loud, 22 HP twin cylinder gas engine on a 10K Generac unit. It does everything I need but damn it's loud.

@TinSpinner
I used the muffler off a stock Harley that I got for free (the muffler not a Harley). I had a bung welded on the exhaust outlet of the generator add a little flex-pipe and it worked great. I would say it reduced the noise by half. With an air cooled engine there is still a ton of mechanical noise that is impossible to muffle without an enclosure. Stop by a motorcycle shop and they most likely have a bunch of stock mufflers they'd give or sell to you for nothing(bring a couple 6 packs of cold beer on a friday afternoon ).

Mine went from really loud to not terrible which is a major improvement.

The Greenville Harbor Freight Generator aisle.

ETA they had 2 900/750 Tailgators left.

(They wouldn't sell the display 2000 to a customer)

Well, the center of the cone is now scheduled to pass just to the south of Tryon, North Carolina where they are having the World Equestrian Games this week and next.

They were expecting 500,000 visitors.  Parking in fields, etc. Facilities largely incomplete with grooms from around the world staying in tents. I expect it will look like Woodstock by Monday.

Thank you for the kind offer.

We haven't chosen to stay because we have no options.

I'm a firm believer in personal responsibility.  After reviewing the information we have available, my wife and I have chosen to stay.

We're pretty well prepared, and this isn't my first rodeo.  I've looked at the maps regarding storm surge, and don't think I'll get any "surge" where we are.   If it floods, it floods, but I'll be here to mitigate any further damage.  I'll also be here to look after my neighbors place, and assist neighbors with the clean up effort.  If I leave, we may not be able to return for a while.  Kinston is between here and where we'd evacuate to.  Kinston floods if it rains anywhere in NC.

I'm not going to evacuate because the government says I should.  They also said I should eat a lot of pasta and grains.  Fuck them, I know what's best for me and mine.

We'll be fine.  Or not. But either way, it will have been our decision and we will deal with the consequences.

I'll be watching this thread, and update with what's going on in New Bern.  Right now, it's typical hot and humid day.  Of course, that's subject to change.....
I salute your determinism, and wish you the best of luck!  Report as conditions permit.
Thank you.  I really don't believe it's going to be that bad where I live.  I'll definitely keep everyone posted via this thread, and encourage others who are "Sheltering in Place" to do the same.

Just curious...how long have you lived there in New Bern and how many Cat 4 hurricanes have you experienced there?

Have you looked at the storm surge forecast for New Bern? Bear in mind that since last year storm surge is forecast 'above ground level' and no longer 'above high tide'. Appears you'll be dealing with a 15' surge above ground level, and before the wave action on top of the surge.

Good luck to you, Sir, I hope nobody dies trying to save you...and may God have mercy on your soul.

I've lived here in New Bern since 2005, when I moved here from Jacksonville, NC.  Off and on, I've been in Eastern NC off and on since 1991, and been through pretty much all the storms except anything 1998-2001 when I was on recruiting duty.

I don't know how many Cat 4's I've been through, probably none.  But I went through Bertha and Fran in 1996, which were pretty much direct hits to Jacksonville, NC.  I've seen what they can do.

I considered evacuating, but I made the decision to stick around.  I've encouraged many others to leave, but I'm staying.

This isn't a dick-measuring contest, I'm no badass, and I'm not trying to make like one.  I'm comfortable with my decision to stay.

As far as someone dying to save me - not happening.  I won't call if it's that dangerous.  I wouldn't put someone else at risk.  28 years active duty leaves me with a real sense of concern for first responders, like we're on the same team.

Again, I'm not in an area where storm surge will be that much of a concern.  Flooding- maybe, but it will be a slow rise.  I'll wait it out. I'm a little NW of "River Bend" on the below map.

I don't expect to come out unscathed, and I'll deal with whatever comes up.  But, at this point in time, we're staying.

Thanks to everyone for their concern.

After this is over you could probably pick up generators cheap from Lowes after
they get turned back in. The Honda MC shop in Greenville, NC sells them too.
A guy in the store said he was asked what the return policy is. He told them
there wasn't any. You buy it its your's.

As a guy who used to work on small engines in a mower shop I can guarantee that most of the noise from a generator isn't from the exhaust. Its from the engine itself and the alternator. Just get the best muffler you can and lean some plywood on the sides of the generator. Looks redneck but it works. Leave some room for air circulation.

One of my issues is where I park the generator when it is in use. I have transfer switches on the panels and a hard wired outlet outside my basement door. The cable isn't very long so the unit sits just outside the walk out basement door. There is an "L" shaped brick retaining wall and the wall of the house surrounding it so the sound reverberates off all that brick. It happens to be below my bedroom too so the generator doesn't run at night usually.

A plywood sheet or two with something even as basic as foam board or other insulation will really help cut down on that sound bouncing.

This.

The wind is not the biggest concern, actually the least concern of most people. It's the 3+ FEET of rainfall over two or three days, 80ft waves that have been reported, and a greater than 1ft storm surge that is of most concern to the coast.

The wind was my primary concern with so many trees around my house, so I'm resting a little easier with the downgraded speed and modified course.

Thank you for readdressing it.

If I lived in Downtown New Bern, I'd not hesitate to bounce out of here, but my neighborhood "should" be okay.

I've ran some errands around town, and to be honest, there are a lot more folks out and about than I expected.  Several of my immediate neighbors are staying.  Hell one family evacuated to Winston-Salem last night only to return today about 1p.m.  They were concerned they would be able to get back for a week or ten days, which is entirely possible.

You're right in that there are many people that are unprepared and will rely on someone to save them, whether actually being rescued or needing provided drinking water and food.  I'm not one of those people.

Again, I'm not thumping my chest or anything, I just think (not feel, but actually think), we'll be okay here.  If not, I picked up a few pool noodles for emergency flotation:

If I lived on the water, I'd have unassed the area yesterday.

...FLORENCE'S PEAK WINDS HAVE DECREASED SLIGHTLY BUT THE SIZE OF THE WIND FIELD HAS INCREASED...
...LIFE-THREATENING STORM SURGE AND RAINFALL EXPECTED ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE CAROLINAS...

The hurricane force winds now extend 70 miles around the eye (it was 40 miles) and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175
miles. It still has 125 mph sustained winds.

If the eye passes over Myrtle Beach like the forecast shows, that may mean 125 mph sustained winds from Wilmington to damn near Charleston.

Tropical storm force winds (up to 74 mph sustained) would extend from Pamlico Sound to Savannah.

They're also forecasting up to 40" of rainfall near landfall.

125 mph sustained winds are only 5mph away from CAT 4.  So saying it is now Cat 3, while technically correct, is 1) still a MAJOR hurricane, 2) still inches close to Cat 4, and 3) easy to get people complacent, thinking it will stay a 3.  It can strengthen whenever it wants to before landfall, and it still has time to do so.

It's just now nearing the Gulf Stream...and that's really warm water. There is also a lack of shear to knock the top off the storm. This bitch could definitely get back up to Cat 4 before landfall.

The end of my street a little bit ago.

I post a pic tomorrow.  It won't look like this.

Just think of what it was like without any warning system.  A day or two prior, there's a slightly stronger than normal breeze, and maybe a little higher water level.  Word doesn't get around since there are no phones or other instantaneous communication, then BAM - 48 hours later all hell breaks loose

People used to have wall barometers they kept a pretty close eye on during hurricane season and they used flags as warnings too. They still didn't have nearly the warning we get today.

regarding florence weakening....

if you look at a florence loop, you can see the eye collapsing -

florence is undergoing an eye wall replacement cycle, so she will be stronger again, afterwards
