Ugh more fiction on the "history" channel, if you guys like real history you should checkout Dan Carlins podcast "Hardcore History" 10X better than anything youll see on that sad shell of what used to be a good network.

Really good episode to start it off with I thought.
Biggest problem was the teaser at the end of the episode.....I feel like they showed every critical scene and plot line for the whole season |
|
Also...Episode 2 will be available tommorrow online at history.com

Meh, wasn't impressed. Yea I hope this episode was just a set up for the good stuff..to come... What are you looking for in "good stuff" though? Some want to see nothing but bloodshed and sex, others want to see 100% historical accuracy, and some just want a good plausible story. Piss on anybody who's been dumbed down by recent entertainment to only like the blood/guts/boobs. Its idiocracy. What I got out of the show.. 1. Kids wear armbands and swear fealty to the head honcho when they become 'men' 2. Some goober invented a floating sun dial to navigate by 3. There's a tree whisperer who can find the best boat spines 4. A woman can beat down to vagabonds with a hot sword 5. They have open relationships (sex) Did I miss anything? |

Why does every frigging swords and sandals movie have some bad ass warrior woman able to take on multiple men. Damned if Sheena didn't mess up historical entertainment. Ugh... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boudica Besides can't have every lass on screen getting plundered...that would kill off half your view ship pretty quickly. |

I need to see if History channel is on Hulu... they seem to be putting out some decent shows lately.

Do ya think the phrase "What's in your wallet?" was heard on set?

All of my wife's mother's side is full Norwegian. Her dad is Mexican.
My family on my dad's side was only traced to Welsh slave traders in Barbados. But they were mostly mutts. Mom's French/Canadian/English/Scotish/Native American (they tried to hide it). My kids are half mutt, 1/4 Mexican and 1/4 Norwegian. Don't know about vikings in there or not. Great show for entertainment. Ice Road idiots need to go. |

Hot viking wench has skills! I kinda wish they gotten actors from the region (or used accents). American english and vikings don't mix. Well, Gustaf Skarsgard should count. More Swedish people would have been better, obviously. I might have made myself available, for example. 100% Swedish, born, raised, lived there for the first 26 years of my life. What do I win? |
|
I thought the second episode far outstripped the first. While it took a second to get on board with the slaughter of monks, it does take you back to the period. Who hopes the brother gets an ax up his ass? This guy!
|
|
I watched the first ep on my DVR last night.
I was hoping for more skin. It's OK, but it's not blowing me away... /edit half Irish (dad's side going way back) and half german via hungary. I guess not much viking in me although I have the coloration right |
|
Who's watching tonight?
It seems the Viking men were men and the women were too |

LoL I was wondering when someone would bring her up. There may have been all of 10 examples in 2,000yrs of history where there were some badass warrior women. Contrast that to every show that has one. I guess it makes good drama, though. *shugs* |

The Scandinavians had a pretty well established cadre of female heroes in their mythology and sagas, from Lagertha to Freydis to the origin legend of the Lombards. The problem is this whole "there are no lands to the west" BS. Complete balderdash. It is really interfering with being able to enjoy any aspect of the show, unfortunately. This episode was better; I'm hoping once they establish (as was well known to the Germanic peoples of the time) that there are, in fact, lands to the west, we can dispense with this idiotic attempt to drum up drama. |

I know there are plenty of female heroines in nordic mythology, the Valkyries being the most well know. I was just inferring that there are actual female warriors that commanded great respect in their day. And yes the show basing itself on the plundering aspect of the viking completely diminishes their true accomplishments, mainly that they are history's greatest explorers, traders and settlers. Rus= Viking settling modern day Russia. Normans were vikings who settled down, and then took over England. Their settlements were literally all over the world. All most people seem to remember is the pillaging aspect. |

1) They never would have killed the blacksmith. Way to important to the village.
2) "No land to the west" may be the lords attempt to keep control of his subjects. If anybody can go out and get rich there is no need to be subject to the lord. He seems a paranoid character trying desperately to keep control. 3) Europe was just starting to come out of e Dark Ages when the Vikings came along and set it back hundreds of ears. Since monasteries were easy targets they attacked them first destroying centers of knowledge and learning just as they were getting started. This set back the renaissance about 200 years. The looting destroyed economies and drained wealth. The same effect that excessive taxation has on an economy. 4) They did not initially spread civilization. At first, they simply pillaged, raped and looted. Settlement came later as they outgrew their homelands and needed more land to feed their expanding population. 5) As much as some people here may not like to hear it, their acceptance of Christianity did seem to have a positive effect on their civilization. The raiding stopped and their energies were diverted to exploration and expanding their settlements. 6) Like the Celts, the women often fought alongside their men and several rose to prominence in their history and lore. |

Ugh... because the viking women were just as bad as the men My great grandfather's name Was Thure that is the Swedish and correct spelling of Thor. He was huge for a man of that time he came to the us in the 1890's he was 6'8 in and almost 300 lbs. I have several pictures of him and my great grandmother together he always was sitting because they could not get them in the frame unless he was sitting. |

I liked both episodes.
But I hate shows like Cupcake Wars. Maybe that is the flavor of show many here like.... |

Who ever said I was nordic? I am of the germanic persuasion. My lineage has been traced back to hessian mercenaries during the revolution...you know guys like these. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/Catapharact/hessian4.jpg Though really I am pretty far removed from them by now. If you're of the germanic persuasion, then you are closely related to the Nords. The Nords are descendants of the germanic tribes who settled in scandinavia. |
