Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance in The Shining and also and Col Jessup in A Few Good Men

Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones

Gregory Peck as General Savage in Twelve O'Clock High

Jackie Gleason as Sheriff Justice in Smokey and the Bandit

Tom Cruise as Nathan Algren in The Last Samurai

Morgan Freeman as Red in The Shawshank Redemption (Although the character in the book is a redheaded Irishman I think Freeman makes the movie, as well as a much better Red, with his performance)

Clint Eastwood as Gunny Highway in Heartbreak Ridge

I know in GD it is really popular to hate Hollywood and rant and rave about Hollywood Libs but there is no denying that over the years they have turned out MANY stellar movies.

Went through the first couple pages and all my picks have been named already.  Tony Soprano was going to be my #1 then I had a few more.

One that may not have been mentioned, but I still think is underrated was Dwight Yoakam as Doyle in Sling Blade.  Doyle was such a perfect asshole stepdad archetype; he totally nailed it.  Fuck Doyle!

I think he did decent as the "chemical super freak" in The Rock, but as any kind of ex-military in Con Air? Not with that hunchbacked, gangly ass posture.

I don't like the question.

Most of the roles you cant fathom another actor playing are because you've only seen that actor in the role.

Some actors rise to the challenge and don't need to be "perfectly cast". Dan Lewis and Gary Oldman come to mind.

If you've played the whiney guy for all your roles and a casting director needs a whiney guy, then calls the whiney guy, that's not really a great achievement.

Good points. And in some cases, the actors MADE the characters/roles.

Eg. Johnny Depp's weird friggin mannerisms made the Jack Sparrow character that way.

Ian McShane as Al Swearingen and Garrett Dillihunt as both his characters in Deadwood. I don’t know that I could be civil with Dillihunt if I met him due to his portrayal of Wolcott.

Really the whole cast killed it, though.

Tim Roth as Archibald Cunningham.

While my top pick for 'The Chameleon' goes to Gary Oldman, Tim Roth is on the list (wide range from playing the Bellboy in Four Rooms, to various other roles).

It seems like a lot of British actors are versatile enough to blend into the roles they play, vs turning the role into some version of themselves every time.

Gary Oldman
Daniel Day Lewis
Tim Roth
Ralph Fiennes
Kenneth Branagh
Ian Holm

Was also impressed by Sharlto Copley going from playing the meek pencil pusher in District 9, to the unstable bad guy in Elysium.

Respectfully disagree. Reynold's wit and sarcasm are "him" he's not really acting when he's playing Deadpool, and he comes across exactly as Deadpool would. Anyone else and it would be "forced".

Agreed. Ryan Reynolds really fit the sarcastic, wisecracking character from the comic books.
