Skyraider. I got to sit in one when I was a Cub Scout on a field trip. Later I got to see them at work outside Saigon in '68.

I've heard that some variants of the Skyraider could carry a dozen soldiers, but it seems really difficult to get good pics of the fuselage interior. It's a BIG bird so it seems plausible.

Thankfully their engines were PoS.

The only problem with the engines was the use of absolutely shit alloys because they could not get any good ones.

Second place tie

Grandfather flew PBY Catalina as a WW2 Squadron Commander.
Other grandfather Bombardier on B29 then Navigator on a B36.

Came here here to post this. The “ensign eliminator”, and “whistling death”. Like a Ferrari Dino, there is nothing else like her. I too was enamored with the Corsair and Pappy Boyington. Hard men doing hard things.

F6F (specifically the F6F-5) Hellcat.
Broke the back of Japanese combat aviation in the Pacific. Also displaced a bunch of dive bombers off carriers because, hey presto, it could do their job too, and tackle the fighters afterward.
View Quote
Yes! Came here to post this.

The Hellcat was robbed of it's due respect and glory by historians announcing that Japan could never recover from the loss of pilots at Midway. The arrival of the Hellcat followed right on the heels of Midway and ever since it's dominance has been written off as going against inferior pilots.

At Midway the Japanese did lose 248 aircraft but only 110 pilots. 74 shot out of the sky and 36 in attacks on the carriers. If we go by the law of averages which had Japanese naval airgroups divided in equal thirds between fighter, torpedo bomber, and dive bomber then we can estimate somewhere around 40 fighter pilots we're lost. That's not an evisceration of their fighter pilots. In addition none of the losses involved land based fighters and Japan's land  based fighter pilots had years of experience fighting over China.

It's true that Midway ended Japan's ability to project power with it's carriers but for the next year when it's planes took to the skies they were still being flown by some of the most experienced pilots in the world.

The next engagement after Midway was Truk lagoon and the Hellcats absolutely curb stomped the land based Zeros and Oscars they met. (Oscar's were better dogfighters than the Zero) Watch and read interviews of our surviving pilots from Truk and they describe very skilled adversaries they faced. The Hellcat was just superior.

F106.  Still holds the world speed record for a single jet engine aircraft.  Set in 1959.  62 years and no one has built a faster single engine jet.

The cool thing is they took two down there for attempt.  Spent a lot of time/effort getting one ready to run for the record and had problems with it the morning of the attempt.  So the pilot got in the back up, which had not been prepared for the speed record attempt and still set the record in that F106.  My dad worked on them at Minot AFB from 1967 to 1970.  5th FIS.  The Spittin' Kittens.  Mascots were two Canadian lynxes.  Another first/only is they were the only two Canadian lynxes to breed and have kittens in captivity.  Dad used to say they were probably just trying to keep warm one cold ND winter night.
