George VI died on February 6th, 1952. She became Queen on that date.
I was born a month later, on March 5th, 1952. So she has been Queen my entire life. I don’t think I could have wished for a better one. |

Quoted: Classy and very much supported a positive US/UK partnership. She played our National Anthem at Buckingham after 9/11 as previously mentioned above. Very large gap in the world stage with her gone. View Quote She has been a solid friend and ally to the United States and the world is lesser with her gone. May she rest in peace. |

Quoted: The sun does set on the British empire. View Quote AIUI, due to the geographic spread of the still-UK-owned islands/dependencies, the Sun is always up over at least one of them, still. The Empire is kaput, though, and has been since the 1950s (although the Handover of Hong Kong in 1997 was the definitive closing of the casket). Arguably, the Empire was economically and military unsustainable since the 1920s....and WWII (along with US foreign policy) just hastened the process. |

If Charles was half the man he should be, he would pass the crown to William.
William seems like he would be the perfect King. A big plus for his family. |

Artist Juliet Pannett recalled an anecdote Her Majesty had told her about going unrecognised while shopping for cake in Sandringham. "As she came out of the shop, an elderly lady said 'Good heavens, you look just like the Queen'," Pannett, who painted the Queen during the 90s, told the BBC. Her Majesty, who was wearing a headscarf at the time, simply replied, "How reassuring" and went about her day. She was similarly cheeky when a group of American tourists crossed her path near her Balmoral estate, unwittingly asking whether she'd ever met the Queen. The incognito monarch, who was dressed again in a headscarf, simply gestured to her protection officer and replied, "No, but he has." View Quote |

Quoted: Prince William as the new Heir Apparent picked up a few extra titles today. He was Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus (titles given in 2011 just before his marriage). He gets to keep all those as also gets the titles associated with the heir: Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. He also now owns the Duchy of Cornwall and it's 131,000 acres of land along with all it's revenue. He is not yet the Prince of Wales or Earl of Chester as they don't automatically go to the heir, those titles are now merged with the Crown and vacant until Charles decides to grant them to someone (and by convention since 1301 they have always been conferred on a male Heir Apparent). View Quote He ain’t anything unless he’s the Duke of Earl |

Nothing against the Queen, but does it seem weird we have to lower our flags to half mast? We decided years ago we did not want to be a part of the royal family, why dip our national ensign? Supposed to keep them at half mast until internment - that will be a week or more I would guess.

Quoted: I'm actually sadder about this than I thought I would be. https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/163640/Queen_Elizabeth_II_jpg-2518895.JPG As the Queen for 70 years, she was a driving force behind the special relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States. In one notable example, on September 12, 2001, the Queen requested that the Star Spangled Banner be played during the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace in a show of solidarity with the U.S. after terrorist attacks killed nearly 3,000 innocent people on American soil. The Elizabeths seem to bookend the age of English glory
Elizabeth I saw England's rise to a world power Elizabeth II saw the end of the Empire and the reduction of Britain to its current state. It had to be hard on her. She was the product of another age where duty always overrode self. I hope she rests in peace. |

A true lady, whose efforts to keep up British Morale during WW2 are very much underappreciated. I have always had a great deal of respect for her.
When she was 14, Winstoin Churchill asked her to make a broadcast of encouragement to be heard over the world via BBC Home and World services. This was also a plea for help from the US and other nations. Children's Hour Broadcast God Save the Queen - 85th Birthday of HM, Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey |
