I don't really believe this. Considering the considerable cost of putting the rovers up there, they wanted a LOT for the taxpayers' money. They sold it to us as a 90-day mission as a "cost-cutting" feature.. then, when the rovers exceeded their life span, they said "They're too valuable to let them just rot up there! Give us more money to study the planet!" Which, actually... I don't mind. It's better than Obama's mission for NASA. View Quote Oh wait, Islamic outreach or something along those lines. FBHO |

It is in no possible way a bomb. The plutonium 238 isotope in the RTG only breaks down by alpha decay. A sheet of paper will stop alpha particles. It cannot reach criticality. View Quote Most interesting part of that was that they were still reading off their script when the countdown hit zero and the thing started heading up. Oops. Might have wanted to start reading that about five minutes earlier. Oh well. Nothing happened and we had already been given a printed copy in our information packets. |

It was a design that was specced to last 90 days that turned into 14 years. If that isn't a job well done, I don't know what is. "Last longer" has to have an end at some point. The rover (if it dies now or in the future) is an overwhelmingly massive success. View Quote 2) Wear it continuously for 60 years, subjecting it to impact, water immersion, and abuse. 3) When it finally dies, bitch on the internet about retarded designers who didn't include a removable back. |

I have no idea how they do it (not my area of expertise) but I know they pick out coordinates somehow and move the rover from point-to-point with the ability to override if they spot something they want to take a closer look at.

The design and build team for that thing deserves a ton of credit, as do the operators who have been finding creative workarounds for broken down systems to keep it running this long.

kind of off topic, but will the latest bit of news about organic matter and methane found on Mars be enough incentive to fast track another mission, one which could retrieve deeper subsurface samples and determine how the methane is being generated. for those who have insight on the politics of funding these missions, are the findings low or high priority? also, moons like Enceladus and Europa are also prime candidates for possible life, are they also given priority status?

Quoted: When I first found out that Curiosity was rolling on 20s I tried to talk one of the JPL project leads to add spinners. He wouldn't go for that, but just think of how totally cool that would have looked in the footage that got beamed back to earth!!! It would have been worth the weight penalty. View Quote |

Interesting story. It should be hidden a little better though in case the Mars Rover makes it through.

Which was a major coup for JPL, normally they would have been required to use "NASA" or gibberish instead instead of promoting only a component laboratory. They didn't point out the meaning of the pattern to anyone until after launch. Kharn View Quote |

Adds weight and complexity that does not add to the mission. This rover's spec was for 90 days, it's gone 50x times that requirement - looks like they didn't need a way to clear off the solar panel. Quoted: I think the point everyone is trying to make is that we now know a 5000+ day mission is feasible. So what steps should be taken to facilitate survival of a future design. No one is saying "OMG stupid engineers did not putting wipers on the rover and it died!"... View Quote |
