I received my new AT&T sim card from OTR Saturday.  It came with a slip of paper that said the sim was activated, just plug it in and it will work.  I said a couple of prayers, plugged it in, and powered it up.

What do you know.  It works.  I'm getting 20.86 down and 5.32 up.  Now it costs me 10 bucks more a month, but it's still cheaper than Hughes.

I had the same issue, and have a bootleg AT&T at one location still up, but if you have Sprint or T-Mobile, https://calyxinstitute.org  this is way cheaper and has lots of life on the agreement, I have both and if you can get a Sprint or T-Mobile signal it is fine. NO limits, and tax deductible if it matters. There is no BS with Calyx.

Well, this sucks. I've had great luck with OTR on tmobile so far. Seems they may have been selling these plans using phone/tablet plans instead of hotspot plans and TMo has caught on. Everyone with TMo and a Nighthawk modem went dead yesterday morning. OTR claiming theres a TMo outage which is total horseshit considering I have TMo service for our phones and they work just fine. Fuck

Glad I don’t have a nighthawk, but I’m not sure how long T-Mobile will let me operate operationally on my lb1120 either.

ETA: my sim got shut off a couple days ago, but OTR was able to resuscitate it.

My parents OTR mobile AT&T sim shut off yesterday. I just got disconnected from the chat after a couple hours of waiting (got down to number 8) to get it fixed so I guess the wait starts over.  There were well over 100 waiting both times I started.

I also have a gypsy wireless AT&T plan that I am trying out, had it for a couple weeks, and it shut off a couple days ago.  I had to activate a new sim card to get that up and running.  Both accounts are MR1100's.

Have OTR with t-mobile sim in a M1 nighthawk. Haven't had service since last Wednesday. We have been on chat on three occasions since, for a total of about 7 hours. We were last told (saturday) that there was/is a t-mobile outage... I don't believe that shit.  Went to get on chat today and its slam full. I'm not wasting any more time on that fucking chat.  I'm ready to give this shit up and do a charge back on my CC.

What's everyone using for a ISP that has left OTR?

I dont understand how that excuse keeps coming up. There is no logical way that Tmobile, AT&T, or any other big provider don't know exactly what the resellers are selling. Even if resellers are a drop in the bucket in terms of their network utilization, some salesman somewhere has to approve their MVNO or whatever they're using to buy all these plans, and if it were that verboten they'd not allow it all.

I think they just don't care... until they decide they do. Probably when a few borderline areas end up congested.

Although the president previously claimed OTR was now an authorized MVNO? It's frustrating not ever getting the full scoop on anything.

For what it's worth my tmobile as well as two neighbors with it is still working fine. None of us are using nighthawks, though. If anything mine has been faster than recently.

ETA: I fucking dread seeing this thread get bumped because it always causes a fear that they are going to fuck my service again.

Well it appears they finally killed my ATT plan.

Was still running att even after getting the non working T mobile.

Was hoping there wait had gotten better and it’s not.

I’m 125 out of  150 on hold waiting for a CS rep.

Trying to get my T-Mobile card working.

good luck.

Amazingly enough, my t mobile service started working today at about 1pm.  A otr rep messaged me at 11pm last night to let me know they were working on it.

My service took a shit today after turning the MR1100 off & moving to a new location.

Now back at the original location and it still doesn't work.  3+ hours waiting for a drone to tell me get a new ATT SIM.  3-7 Days processing.  Sheesh!  Then back to chat to get a credit according to them.  It wouldn't be so bad if the wait wasn't so long.  If they would get to you in 10-20 mins it would be almost tolerable.

So some one bring me up to speed on carriers as of now.

I have been away from this thread for a month or so.

I have officially given up on OTR.

I had bought a Nolimitdata sim back when OTR was giving trouble and went to use it today and they are saying that my service is up? I never activated it it was a fresh card.

SO no sure I want to do business with them either.

I also called my local ATT to see what they offer and they have a business unlimited plan she was pushing pretty hard. Said in heavily stressed words that if I have a home grass cutting or car washing business it would count.

But according to her you have to get a hotspot they sell with the plan and the plan last the term of the HS which is 20 months. And I am not signing up for that.

Anyone aware if they offer just the plan?

Thanks for the heads up. I have unlimited (the old plan that really was unlimited) with Sprint. My ZTE PocketWiFi died today (Not the service but the gadget) and nobody has a decent replacement in stock, everyone is on backorder. Calyx has them! So i'm going to dump Sprint when the Calyx Inseego Mifi 8000 gets here and I'm sure it works. The only other choice was to buy a used  ZTE PocketWiFi off Ebay and that always worries me. The 8000 also has external antennae ports so I won't have to keep it in the window, LOL!

I had never switched to any of the new plans but my old ATT service was still working, up until last weekend when it stopped.  I've been on the chat waiting to talk to somebody for a little over 3.5 hours and still have about 10 people in front of me.  Hopefully they can somehow get me back up and running.

On the ATT no not really she said $80 a month for service but did have tax, fees and 20month contract and acted like you had to buy there device which was out of stock.

I asked about bringing my own device and she acted like it was a possibility. Think she gets paid a commission off her sales so I could see how she doesn’t want to let someone bring a device.

You would think out of all of Arfcom we have a member that works at a ATT store that could help a brother out and get some good clear info on the subject.

On another note, no limit data did respond and activate my sim after hours and I have been up and running with them now.

Sevice is plenty fast for us but not the crazy unthrottled speeds we seen with early on with OTR.

This is a speed test from last night while my wife was teaching online at the same time and 2 security cameras going.

If it's this plan, it seems to be designed for a smart phone, so if you go by the $85/month plan with 100gb of hotspot data it will throttle to 128k after that .

Finally got on chat this morning and they got my tmobile sim working again, so I'm back up and running on OTR now.

That was nearly my exact scenario, sprint would not move the old plan to a new device, OTR is flaky and expensive, Calyx has the same sprint truly unlimited service with .gov guarantees under some random program; and for me I didn't need the ext antennas although I bought them! Hope it works out for you too, not a hiccup here.

How long have you been with Calyx?

The whole site, name and what they are doing puts off some weird vibes to me.

Was doing some reading on there facts page and see they do not offer refunds if you dont like the service.

And the following.

Q: Can I take the SIM card out of the hotspot you provide and use it in another device?

A: Our reseller agreement with our hardware provider, Mobile Citizen, prohibits the use of third-party equipment. Members who are found by Mobile Citizen to be using third-party equipment will have their service terminated.

And the big deal breaker for me is this.

Contributor$500 for first year, $400 thereafterCalyx stickers + T-shirt + 1 year 4G/LTE wireless + Coolpad Surf Wi-Fi hotspot

Coolpad Surf

This device is available with the Contributor level of membership or higher.

The Coolpad is a sleek, lightweight device that brings Wi-Fi access while on the go. Hotspot and device management is achieved via web interface.

Specifications

Battery Life: 5.3 hrs usage, 48 hrs standby
Maximum Number of Connected Devices: 10 Wi-Fi
Networks supported:
4G/LTE (bands 2, 4, 12, 66, 71)
No 3G fallback. LTE only.

Max Theoretical Speed: 150Mbps Down / 50Mbps Up
Wi-Fi Technology / Frequencies: 802.11 b/g/n
Dimensions: 4.25” x 2.6” x 0.59” / 3.4 oz
Cellular Antenna Ports: None

I found out just how many wifi devices are in my house when I did some research on my router and was blown away by the crap I have in my house. lol

There price is great tho. $41.66 per month for the first year and $33.33 per month after that. I think if one lives in a good sprint coverage area and cam live with less than 10 wireless devices connected at one time then its the way to go.

Calyx and a couple of others like them are legitimate. The reason is sprint is forced to honor some rural broadband agreement to my understanding, so some of them have you affirm that you meet certain low income criteria or some other such hardship.

I do wonder how the tmobile / sprint merger will affect that.

Pardon my ignorance but after reading through their website,

Are these assumptions of mine correct re: Calyx:

1] I also have to have a Sprint account?

1a] If yes, is there a particular level of Sprint service required?

2] non Sprint devices [up to 10 total devices] can connect?

3] Must also need a modem from them [or is that cool pad surf]?

3a] The coolpad Surf can also be used as a mobile hotspot elsewhere.

Thanks

I have been on three years. No refunds sucks, make sure you get sprint signal before you DONATE, it is a NFP of some sort, but legit. You get the service from 'donating' to research. It is legit though. NO drops ever for me, streaming 3 or 4 devices at once through a bridged router, no problems at all. Depending on the router you use, connections are what you want.

On the changing devices thing, that is 'Mobile Citizen' or whatever, however, once you get the device, get the phone number, set up a sprint online account, and since it is not a leased or sprint owned device, sprint will - or did for me- do a swap. Just make sure whatever the device you are going to use has the frequencies for sprint of course.

No additional Sprint account necessary, it comes ready to run. Unless you set up an online account with the phone number, Sprint has no reason to know who you are. Calyx is not income based, it is research into privacy, VPN's and the like.

Yes, but at first I bridged it to a router and it if memory serves me got 30 connections via the router, the hot spot only uses one to the router and go from there. I got a swap for a better signal, but for the addition 100 up front you get external antenna possibilities already. And they don't force you to buy, although it seems that way, it is a donation. And it has ridden out more than one buyout already, it will survive T-Moblie too.

How did you bridge the cool pad modem to a router? From what I read there are no lan ports.

Not offered for me.

Dont understand why. We have T mobile towers in the area and a rural relatively poor county. I wonder what they are searching when they ask for your address?

There are wireless router connections...I didn't start out with that cool pad, the device was the same but an older model, worked the same. Router setup as 'device' to the cool pad, then let the router hand out connections, the cool pad only sees one connection that way. You can do pretty much whatever with off the shelf gear today. If you need specifics just ask.

edit for spelling

Probably requires 5G.  I'm not sure though.

I know we have 5G about 10min down the road but think its ATT. We live not far from the I85 corridor and generally always have decent cell service across all the providers.

Well this is lovely. Got tmobile back up and running g through OTR but they removed the HD video streaming option, so now everything is 480p quality. And forget streaming to 2 devices at once.

Ordered a new at&t sim from them to give that a shot.

Did you ask them to turn off “binge mode”? You can email them or contact via the contact form on your account page. That way you don’t have to spent an eternity in chat.

OTR was good while it lasted. I had to say goodbye when they went toTmobile, no service in my area.
I moved on to Never Throttled, AT&T provider but they figured a way around the AT&T issues OTR was having.
Cost is a little more but at least I have good service again, at least for my area.

Sounds like BS to me, they must have gotten their peepee smacked by T mobile for turning off the binge mode for customers, mine is still off and I just checked my streaming speed and it’s 19mbps.

What the viability of using a tablet with a wireless plan as a modem/access point. I have exactly zero options for internet at my new house, but great AT&T service. Verizon is slow as balls. It looks like with AT&Ts premium plan, you can get 100GB of premium data plus/or with 30GB of hotspot data. That seems to be way more than enough data for our use. My thinking is screen share the tablet to tv screen for streaming (not getting satellite TV, only 1 tv), then hotspot the tablet for general wifi use around the house. Is there a way to connect the tablet to a wifi booster that will give a better signal, or even an Ethernet output to wired security cameras?

Just brainstorming here.

I contacted Calyx and this was what I was told:

Each membership includes a hotspot. We currently offer the CoolPad Surf
or the Mifi 8000 as our hotspot options. You can learn more about these
devices here: https://calyxinstitute.org/membership/devices

It seems to me that the Mifi is more capable so why would anyone choose the Coolpad?

Thanks
