My son's old Troop did that. I found a new one that is a lot more old-school. No Mommies allowed on campouts. View Quote We were always lucky to have strong leadership from the dads. We had navy chiefs, a navy combat photographer, a few cops, and several truck mechanics. The scoutmaster had been scoutmaster for 30 years and was a minor legend in the council. Doc would be very disappointed in the current BSA. |

I'm a bit torn on this. The Girl Scouts is totally lame, and if I had a daughter I would be saddened that she wouldn't have the opportunities I had in the Boy Scouts. On the other hand, I suspect strongly that this will practically destroy the organization. View Quote My son was in a tent almost from the first moment he joined Cub Scouts as a Tiger Cub, and shooting BB guns with parental supervision that same year. Girl Scouts can't shoot bows until they're Brownies, and some units don't even allow that. And GSA has absolutely no shooting sports program at all. Nothing. BSA's isn't fantastic, but it's there! |

I was an Eagle scout in the '70's. Went to Philmont. Summer camps at ALFLO, had a shooting range that no longer exist. Good times. A few years ago in a heart to heart with my son, I told him I always regretted not getting him in to Boy Scouts. He told me not to sweat it dad and was glad I didn't push him to join. He now resides on a small "compound" just south of Crestview, Fl with a "Group" of real men, so I guess he turned out ok.

I remember when I quit cub scouts. Best decision I ever made at 8

My son just earned his eagle. We saw the writing on the wall, and he was glad to get it done before the scouts completely fell apart. He's concerned that they will neuter the program down so much that "eagle" won't mean anything.
I was a den leader all through his cub years, and asst scoutmaster for his scout years, Im still there. I told the scoutmaster that if a girl shows up, I'm gone. Nothing against girls, they just don't belong in Boy Scouts. Just like boys need to stay out of GS. |

I wasn't a boy scout so I don't get this. So they're allowing females to earn eagle scout now? What is the problem with that?

Starting in the 2018 program year, families can choose to sign up their sons and daughters for Cub Scouts. Existing packs may choose to establish a new girl pack, establish a pack that consists of girl dens and boy dens or remain an all-boy pack. Cub Scout dens will be single-gender — all boys or all girls. View Quote Boys and girls will not be intermingled. |

Don't know if it is the best decisions, but I've heard that Girls Scout leadership leans feminist, so maybe this might be a decent options for parents who want a daughter to be outdoorsy without the feminist indoctrination.

Some have mentioned the LDS (Mormons) leaving. Well, the LDS have announced that they will be phasing out the Varsity program from the LDS Youth program, but for the time being they are still keeping the BSA program for LDS boys aged 12-14.
My impression is that, over the next 3-5 years, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will begin phasing out the BSA program for the younger boys as well. In short: The LDS Church isn't out of the BSA yet, but it looks like the writing is on the wall and the days of LDS participation are numbered. This is probably a factor in the BSA expanding their recruitment efforts. |

"We recognize that the desire of the BSA is to expand their programs to serve more young people in the United States. The church, too, continues to look at ways to serve the needs of our youth worldwide." |

As far as activities and quality of the org, it really varies by troop. My boyscout troop was in a rural part of the state, and we did awesome stuff. We were constantly camping at or doing things at the nearby National Guard base (which was huge) because one of the dads was a Master Sergeant there. We did tons of over night canoe camping trips, all sorts of activities in the woods, camped around the Great Lakes and in Canada, I loved it. We had great leaders that really cared. (eta; this was mid 80's) When my boy is old enough I will absolutely get him involved BSA and I will help the org and be involved in any way I can in the hopes that he will have some good experiences like mine.
I work with a guy now (back at my branch in the US anyway, when I'm there) who in involved in his kid's troop and they do tons of great stuff. You guys get too wrapped up in your poutrage bullshit. |
