This place is more like a shop or garage than it is any of your examples. I've worked my whole life in machine shops aside from a couple years at an oil change shop. Grew up on a farm working with a modern day Joad family and/or Mexican migrant farm hands. All of those places had a heavily male group but also had women in some way. They're tougher than you're giving them credit for especially with regards to language.

GD is probably a draw for new people to join. The big fun threads in GD probably draws offsite traffic, some of whom join and buy memberships

Tech is why I joined, though the humor of GD led to me buying my first membership.

You could make the compartmentalized argument if it was an entirely private site with completely restricted access. It's a public site in the sense that anyone can read anything anywhere in the forum that doesn't require paid member, staff or career verification. And I think that the overriding issue being discussed here is that a certain portion of the discourse in the public areas of the site leaves a lot to be desired.

Maybe some of you were raised a lot differently than I was and call politeness a false front. That's too bad, and in my opinion reflects poorly on the person making the claim. I used the church example in my follow up post for a reason. I think that the born agains on the site can guess what it is. There's enough here who claim that status, but without doing a nose count they're interestingly silent in this particular discussion

This. Admittedly, there are a lot of us that get out of hand with the adult humor stuff sometimes. But, even though some of that gets kinda sick at times, that's really just locker room talk and isn't what I'm referring to.

The things that make me cringe at the thought of outsiders reading are the death wish posts. Wishing violent deaths on political figures that we disagree with - McCain, Ginsburg, et al. Those things have gotten completely out-of-hand at times.

Those are the things that do the site harm, IMO. The way that some members continue to rationalize that type of speech by suggesting, "she wants to kill all our babies!!!" or other inane arguments is something that doesn't resonate with me, so I'm fairly confident of how it appears to an outsider looking in.

If there's actually such a thing as 'addition by subtraction,' getting rid of those posts and even the posters who persist in doing it would be a plus from my viewpoint.

Many people, myself included, started in the Tech Forums. I lurked, I read, and I posted the occasional comment only when I had a question or felt I could add something to the discussion.

As mentioned above, I didn't even know about GD for quite some time, and starting ridiculous threads in GD was not even on my radar.

Any new member who seems right at home in GD is immediately suspect in my opinion.

That was my biggest problem in the tech forums....I always felt like there was someone smarter or more qualified than me to answer so I’d just keep my stupid mouth shut. Which speaks to amazing group of people on this site!

Luckily GD doesn’t make me feel the same way....a lot of threads make me feel way above average intelligence.

I have posted in tech threads.  Mainly reloading.  However as great as the AR platform is there is only so much to know unless your chasing every new item and gimmick.  I got tired of doing that so I bought a Jeep.  Now I have all new things and gimmicks to chase.

I learned early on that google searches this site better than the site does.  We all know that.  Also 99.99999% of the questions I had were already answered, so no need to post new threads.  And I had more than one post with the all to great "Use the search function" and "didn't we already do this?" replies.

Do not discount how excited people like me, can get when they finally find a place with people like them.  There are people here who really cannot talk to their coworkers about the things we do in GD, and just need to vent.
