It sort of became the go to material I believe. It’s good for hot weather but doesn’t wrinkle like linen. Don’t quote me on that but my understanding is back when things mattered like quality rayon became the choice for these shirts with silk in there as well.

One brand that I saw this summer, and bought several shirts from, is a brand called Kahala.

I think it is one of the "older" brands, but went out of business for a while, but now it has been brought back.  So of course they claim to be one of the old/original companies, but it's a bit like Armalite.    But I actually like them a lot.  Most of my Hawaiian shirts are cotton, not rayon - so Cincinnatus and I have a slight disagreement as to whether rayon is a requirement, or just an option.  I think that various cottons are perfectly fine.

One thing in particular I like about Kahala is that they are very open about the fact that SOME of their shirts are made overseas, and SOME are made in Hawaii - and the Hawaiian made ones are a bit more expensive.

Another brand I like (and have a number of shirts from) is Tori Richard.

Also, for the record, I have a Hawaiian shirt that I made myself.  Rayon, matching pocket, coconut wood buttons, all sown on my own sewing machine (so, not made in Hawaii - but in NoVA)

Hilo Hattie makes up the bulk of my wardrobe, followed by Paradise Found, with a smattering of a couple others.

Beware that the current Hilo Hattie stuff is mostly not made in Hawaii and they are not as high quality (sizes are way off too). I only buy Hawaiian made so pretty much all mine are pre-owned.

I’m not spending much money during inflation but before Biden I still tended to buy used everything so I’d pop into thrift stores in Miami for $7 like new linen shirts or look for thrifts in Hawaii and places that sell used or websites that resell 80s stuff like $50 for Quicksilver surf shorts even though buttonless and seamless surf trunks are the current pro gear. Surf shorts are approaching $100 each from companies like Vissla. The Japanese are making some decent stuff although it’s pricy.http://alohashirts.com/

I have a fuck ton of linen shirts for tropical and subtropical wear like Costa Rica, Bali and Key West but none are Hawaiian. My Dad didn’t like how wrinkled linen gets but if you’re in Hong Kong when it’s hot then wrinkled linen > seersucker suits he wore in South Carolina golf club houses.

Those have strings. As a surfer you don’t want anything that distracts or chaffs as you paddle buttons and strings are pressure points and seems chaff so the $80-$150 current pro board shorts are made without those features. I save my 80s gear for walking around the pier, beach, volleyball tourne and beach bonfire parties

115 degrees? I wear linen if the government isn’t deciding what I wear. Hawaii in summer is usually 84-89 degrees most of the time. Places like Death Valley California, Phoenix, Baghdad, Chabahar Iran or Qatar and Somalia get obnoxiously hot and 100 degree plus in summer Cotton is great for average Boston, Europe & Montreal summers

I've got one of those! It's a really cool cuba themed one with a woman on the front pocket and a woman and an old car and some other stuff on the back back. It doesn't breathe that good for a "daytime" shirt but it works great for a fun evening shirt.

Yesterday, at sunset point for probably two hours.

No one said anything bad about non stringed trunks. My point is you don't need those to surf. I've never had an issue with strings and I'd venture to say the majority don't.

Definitely.  To me, Oahu is somewhere I connect in the airport to go to where I actually WANT to be.   Either Kauai, or the Big Island.

Dont get me wrong. Oahu can absolutely be beautiful, but there are just too many people.

Oahu wasn’t that bad until the late 1990s. Everywhere I’ve enjoyed seems to somehow have an insane amount of people compared to 20 or 30 years ago like Bali and Indonesia is now crowded, even Barbados surf spots are crowded. It’s like the planet all decided to move to the same places on Earth. California I think has finally peaked out at 40 million and now dropping 700,000 since 2020. Florida seems more crowded than I remember back in 2014. I’m not the type to live in the sticks but I also don’t want to live in Manhattan either. Kauai and Maui was my step Dad and Mom’s favorite islands. I really like the big island, it’s a different vibe there. But only as a civilian. Doing Army Training at PTA on those lava rocks is no fun.

When I went to Oahu for LANPAC in 2019 I was blown away that the parks around Waikiki were just one big homeless/druggie/hobo encampment. Pretty sad and nasty. After the conference every day I'd load the wife up in the rental (got a Mustang GT 'vert) and we'd cruise the fuck away from Oahu proper to do a little road trip then a nice sunset dinner/drinks somewhere more secluded. It was her first time but i'd been before. Next time we're definitely heading to the big island for a week(ish) or maybe just YOLOing a smaller island for a really secluded vacation.
