Richard Jenkins and JK Simmons are both in Burn After Reading.  I love that movie.  Not just for the plot (which is hilarious) but just for the sheer talent:

John Malkovitch
Brad Pitt as a ditzy personal trainer
Frances McDormand
Richard Jenkins mooning over Frances McDormand
George Clooney (yes, he's a liberal dick, but he's a great actor)
JK Simmons as an upper-level fed.gov bureaucrat who only cares about CYA

Actually came in to say Casey Affleck and Giovanni Ribisi.  Both were mentioned right away

Also, don't know if he necessarily qualifies as underrated, but GD really likes to shit on Nic Cage because he never turns down a payday no matter how shitty the script.  But he is a phenomenal actor.  Just watch movies like Matchstick Men or Leaving Las Vegas

Other notable mentions are Michael Peña and David Morse.

Agreed, in fact that movie was the one that made me take notice of Rockwell. For Cage, other customer: "Hey have you ever heard of a line?" Cage: "Have you ever been dragged onto the sidewalk and beaten until you PISSED BLOOD?"

Good stuff.

I gotta agree on the first two. Thornton is a pretty big name actor. Sling blade and bad Santa alone made him awesome even if that was was his only two.

Yoakam, good Lord. That dude can play the best asshole I may have ever seen. Completely believable. Met him in Odessa, TX. Great personality and seemed like a nice guy.

I see a lot of folks who play heavies as under rated.  For your good guy, lead to shine, they have to be there for contrast.

Read an article about how casting folks rate actors.  It is called a "Q" rating.  Tom Cruise types have a high Q and get lead rolls. Someone like Bruce Dern has a low Q and is cast heavy in most cases. Acting ability usually has nothing to do with it. It is more about charisma and looks. John C Reilly would be a low Q, with a certain charisma and likeability. He can kill it doing comedy support, but can turn on the creep factor.

Another like that that I admire is the guy who plays the holograph doctor on Star Trek Voyager. His name is Rober Picardo. On that show he played a likeable doormat-servant to the crew.  In one episode he accidentally corrupted his own personality profile and became evil. He could easily play a Mafia hit man as easily as he could play the doc.  The man has some serious acting skills.

I agree he is pretty good, also part of the cast of the movie I mentioned. I'd kinda think he's well known enough not to be considered underrated though.

John Totturo was mentioned and I think he fits the category. Versatile too.

Agreed. Had to look him up to remember him. This is the point of the  thread. Great actors that aren't household names. I suppose I could've been more specific.

Jarhead was only decent during his scenes and he made the movie Breach.

He has quite a range. So much so that I'd suspect he's led a fairly troubled life prior to film. In Alpha Dog, he had the ability to make you think he was legit psycho. The few fight scenes were just awesome. Only parts of that movie worth watching except the Olivia Wilde scenes. Though, I'd rather just look at her than watch her perform, acting that is.

He's been in some decent films, but is fairly one dimensional. Though I actually prefer the blade runner sequel for that reason. He fits the bill of synthetic human to a t.

Eta: he's probably overrated. Bitches love to see him on screen is why he is successful. I did like ho's early performance in that Jew turned Nazi movie, though. Don't remember the title.

Speaking of Sam Rockwell, his voice talents on F Is For Family (as the voice of "Vic") are amazing. Dude is perfect.

I would nominate Dwight Yoakam. He's never really thought of as an actor, even though he's basically killed it in every movie he's ever been in.

Second, I would mention John Goodman. His range is out of this world, and he's never mentioned in the same hallowed company as the more familiar greats.

Yoakam is just badass at whatever he applies himself to, as I've previously said. I'm a huge fan of country music from his day going back. That said, he's a better actor, maybe due to having not as large a musical repertoire as say, George
Strait .
