Hybrid?

Serious question.  The History Channel like 10 years ago before it became the garbage picker channel demonstrated electric APCs that were so stinking quiet, it’s amazing.

Noise on the battlefield from 50 tons of squeaking metal is one thing, but that turbine engine is loud!
View Quote

High pitched noises don’t carry well, nor does a whine carry as well as the clanking of a piston engine.

I’m curious if this will have the Cummins ACE though. That would be awesome.

The Army was developing a turbine that used 1/3 less fuel but it was cut when Crusader was cut. I'd imagine one today would be better and of course the transmission and track can offer savings as well.

They're quiet, powerful, easy to swap, and reliable.   They can swap a power pack out of an Abrams in an hour.

The major drawback is specific consumption but with the addition of the APU the consumption while not actually moving is greatly reduced.

Still thirsty but better than it was.

They are fast enough to rip the tracks up.  I mean 70 tons doing 60 mph driven with a T handle is a little sketchy but I think the tracks are the limiting factor

Yeah, what's wrong with the turbine? The only real weakness I know of is that it consumes a lot of fuel - but being a very multi-fuel capable engine in a time where they were expecting to be retreating with supply lines that would have been getting shorter (and the ability to scrounge fuel from wherever they happened to find it), the turbine made sense. Low coolant requirements and a small size helped too.

It's too bad they didn't follow through with the re-engening that got canceled with the Crusader. Same power with a lot less fuel consumption and a seamless drop-in swap.

A modern multi-fuel diesel would get a lot more power and use a lot less fuel. The turbine made sense given the state of mid '70 diesel engines.

I don't think there is a modern tank with more than 1500 horse.  Even given its weight the abrams is one of the more mobile MBTs, because of that power pack.

Most contemporary MBTs are in the 900 to 1200 horse range.

It’s EV, and it comes with interchangeable phallic extensions on the seats in a variety of sizes and colors, a vagina reticle on the main gun, a disco lighting package, and all manuals use gender-neutral pronouns. The main gun can be folded down between the tracks to look like it’s not even there, a design feature the DoD feels is inclusive and gender-affirming for transitioning crew members.

It will effectively meet all DoD objectives except for actual war fighting performance.

More power? Unlikely. More power density? Unlikely. The turbine leads in every category but cost and fuel consumption. Doesn’t have a massive use of energy for cooling.

The figure that I’ve seen was that an electric transmission with a similar power rating as a conventional drivetrain was 20% quicker to 30mph.

none of which that can really be justified in todays time for its cost.

we had all the best shit in the world and we still lost Vietnam and Afghanistan.

we have a ton of shit that is so needlessly expensive for its combat effectiveness.

i also dont trust the competency of the old military contract industries, hell upstart Space X could build a F35 for 2/3rd the cost if they wanted.

we are so fucking lucky to have two oceans and for our competitors in this world to be so grossly incompetent or we would be fucked.
