Another angle that many here have missed is the volume of SUVs and CUVs have taken much of that small truck market.  How many people actually use the bed of a pickup for loads of dirt and similar? Many of the people that used to drive small pickups drive SUV/CUV.  Now instead of an open bed where shit gets stolen, hot, or cold, it is covered.  You can pull a 4 x 8 trailer with a SUV for the handful of times the average person needs to vertical clearance.  Plain and simple, most people don't need them.

I don't believe that for a minute.

I'd buy a small truck like the Ranger and Toyotas used to be in a heartbeat. I'd wager a lot of people feel the same way.

Taking the newer trucks on forest and desert roads is ridiculous as well. Way easier to get through many of the unmanaged roads in a smaller vehicle. New trucks are like trying to maneuver a bus through obstacles.

LOL. Ford Maverick had a 4 day open order bank and took over 100,000 orders. Some people have been waiting over 500 days for theirs.

We need big trucks to haul our big fat asses!

Big cushy seats, heated steering wheels, oversized Big Gulp holders, automatic everything, mega plush and super comfy - a "real man's truck!"

PS.  Don't forget the 4-foot-high monster chrome grill with an angry, overbearing look about it....so the weanies on the road know who's boss!

An acquaintance of mine has a pristine 2001 Tacoma he uses as a daily driver.  Its a nice size truck and I'd prefer to buy one that size.

As for that size not being something that would sell, I should note that he keeps it in his garage.  If he parks it outside, he is bothered by people wanting to buy it on a daily basis.

Yeah, there is still a market for a smaller truck.  My 2002 isn't pristine, it's lived outside in TX, NV and AZ.  I've been asked many times over the last 5 years if I want to sell it, it would be an easy sell.  And just for GD... it has manual mirrors, windows and door locks.  But with carpet, auto trans, cruise, intermittent wipers, heat, AC, radio, power steering and power brakes.

The Maverick is 6 inches longer,  7 inches wider, and about 7 inches taller.

It's bigger but not by much.  Then considering the crew cab and you've got a truck about as small as you can get built from current year designs.

But yes I too want something like this to make a come back.

I've been on the lookout for a first-gen Ranger like this for a while now. Nothing fancy, RWD, 4-banger, manual everything, with the extended cab for a bit of storage space inside for shit I don't want to leave in the bed. Tough to find. The few you see are mostly 4x4 V6s, or regular cabs. Most are completely trashed.

Small trucks are nice. One of mine is a 98 Nissan Frontier. It has almost 300k miles and a 5 speed manual transmission. I inherited from my father when he died.

Maintaining it is cheap. It gets a respectable 23-24ish MPG for me.

This truck in dark blue was my first truck.  5-speed "one wheel wonder" that I drove for a few years in the early to mid-90's.  It was great at doing 60mph spin-outs in the middle of the highway during winter.

I agree.

Decided that I did indeed want what “there is no market for”. After a year of daily searching, I picked up this ‘97 bare bones 4cyl 5 speed last year with 58k miles on it. I’ve put 21k issue free miles on it as my daily. Should be good to go for another 200k/10 years.

for all those out there in fantasy land saying that mfgs know what the market wants how come Fords maverick is such a huge sales hit that they didn't know to build it years ago?

Mfgs use sales to determine what to build.
Its confirmation basis.

trouble with small trucks is mfgs want to bloat them up with larger cabs, luxury interiors and basically try to make them mini f150's.
by the time they are done stuffing it all in they are just about as big as a f150 and they cost almost the same.

small simple utilitarian small pickups have a market.
The market for used ones prove it.

And I guess by small I mean primarily shorter.  There are millions of people that use trucks primarily in towns and cities for painting, small landscaping/gardening, and a hundred other businesses  that don't need a truck THAT CAN TOW 18,000 LBS, DRIVE THROUGH 3 FEET OF MUD, ILUMINATE YOUR SECOND STORY BEDROOMS DURING POWER OUTAGES, HAS AN AUTO DEPLOY STEPLADDER FOR EASY ACCESS, SPATTER GUARD FOR UNSEEN PEDESTRIANS, AND LIMITED TO THREE ON THE SAME SIDE OF GUAM AT ANY GIVEN TIME.

I just think that there has to be a market for something smaller.  Even trucks like the Ranger are now monstrosities.

There are no more 1/2 ton V8's available.  The Nissan claims 6500lbs towing so it should handle 4500lbs OK on short trips.  I would rather have V8 but since that is no longer an option, I'll get a smaller truck...

Reason #2
I am disgusted with my current Tundra.  less than 80k and all the electronic CRAP is out i.e. the adaptive cruise, the lane warning shit, all the stuff I didn't want to begin with.  Every time it rains, it all starts blinking on the dash

Reason #3
Normally I would have went with Tacoma, but fuck Toyota for selling me this POS Tundra

My 08 Tundra is still going strong.  My son drives it to Bama.  This 2018 Tundra I am driving is crap

I've got a 19 Frontier crew cab sl and love it. While definately not as small as the older 90s rangers or Tacomas it's still much smaller than the giant trucks that are the norm now. Plenty of room in the cab, short bed but still enough space, decent power. It is, I believe, smaller than the new model that came out in 21.
