This is just really capturing my attention. I appreciate the information.

I’m guessing those cases just pretty near last forever with very little attention.

True but it’s not like a guy is loading a gross of 30 round mags with them.

With smokeless you can probably get nice plinking round that doesn’t eat you with recoil, correct?

Any advice on leaving a bit of uncoated lead at the nose? IA apparently considers fully powdercoated bullets fully jacketed and not expanding. Not allowed for hunting.

For hunting with 45-70, just buy some bullets. How many are you actually going through?

It's more satisfying to make them yourself. Then there's the benefit of practicing with your chosen hunting load.

For powdercoated though, I'm thinking more for .450 Bushmaster than .45-70. Have had no problems with my wheelweight loads for .45-70.

On things that I’ve had powder coated by pros they had a way to ‘mask off’ areas not to be coated. Also wouldn’t take much to chuck up a bullet & ‘turn’ the coating off the point.

So simple it's right there and I didn't think of it. Here I am thinking about coatings that will resist the powdercoat and leave clean lead(sort of like in pottery) and my dumb ass didn't think to just try wiping some off.

If you want to shoot giant bears you will need a ruger #1 in 45-70...so you can really stuff it to big power.
Or be "modern" and use a 375 H&H Magnum.

If you have to be vintage, a 600 Nitro Express should level it.

Of course the ominous Weatherby 460 magnum works too.

The lead is so much softer than the powder coat that it compresses to side before the coating even gets a scratch.

I see that. I guess as long as it doesn’t foul the barrel it doesn’t matter.

I used to reload quite a bit but never got into casting bullets. I guess it was because I was mostly shooting high velocity rifles at the time.

I did try loading cast bullets for a .38/55 1894 rifle that I still have but all I could get was key holes with it. Jacketed it shot just fine. The bullets were sized & lubed when I got them, no idea what the weight even was now.

These shoot cleaner than jacketed. No residue. One pull off the boresnake and done.

That’s amazing.

How high can velocity be pushed compared to jacketed?

Next questions that come to mind; If a person had a bullet trap on a pistol range could the lead be recycled? Would the powder coat float up with the other impurities during melting?

There are rifles that you can use LeveRevolution rounds in and there are rifles you cannot use LeveRevolution rounds in. Well, you could but your teef would look like.

That is why there are factory 'Trapdoor' level loads.

According to Hornady Leverevolution is a trapdoor safe load. I emailed them when I got my Contender and was told trapdoor level loads only.

You want wild, shoot the Leverevolution out of a 12 inch barrel.

There are definitely worse loads to shoot. These things are a pound or two lighter than a guide gun though.

Followed the earlier link to those and spent some time thinking it over before FOing on one this morning.  Noplace else like ARFCOM for costing me money.

I know it'll probably hurt with anything warm, much like the Ruger #3 carbine that I got my introduction to .45-70 with.  Hoping to have a lot of fun with plinking loads.  If I can put together a decent shooting load with Lyman's Gould hollow point cast bullet design, might even shoot a deer or two with it.

When this one arrives, there will be a round dozen .45-70s here (if the T/C Contender barrel counts as one).  Of course, boating accidents, etc, etc.
