I wish the fad would've been around when I started college. I would've saved a ton of money on rent/utilities over the 5 years

30k for just rent @ 500/mo vs 10-15k for a camper/tiny home that I could sell after I graduated

EDIT: I have no desire to live in a Tiny Home. Just curious as I keep seeing news articles and youtube videos about them.

Neither. It’s a fad. People with disposable income are going to get tired of having to wash the same 3 sets of clothes twice a week because they have no closets or dressers to put clothes in. Their families are going to get tired of having to do all the cooking and cleanup every holiday because Hunter and Sloan don’t have room in their tiny vineyard house for more than 4 people at a time. Not to mention they can’t shop at Costco or Sami’s Club now or buy the bigger jar of Kalamata olives which now won’t fit in their cooler sized fridge.

The poor have already been living in tiny houses. Their’s have axles and we call them trailers.

My wife, too. I can’t watch them with her anymore.

I got tired of yelling “It’s a tiny home, idiot. What did you expect?” at the TV.  It’s just more virtue signaling by vapid hipsters.

The ones with kids are the worst. Guess who is never going to be able to have their friends sleep over? That’s right, your kids, idiot. But that’s OK. The kids’ friends weren’t going to do it more than once anyway once they get a taste of the tofu dogs and rub their butts raw on the unbleached hemp toilet paper.

You never see the update show where they go back and visit the family a year or two later. It’s always just a month or two after they move in.

“It kinda sucked having Christmas dinner in the meeting room at the local Ryan’s and it was tough turning down the gifts our family got for us but that we don’t have room for in our tiny house. The doctor says Paige’s scoliosis is being complicated by how she has to turn her head at a right angle to be able to see the TV and on account of her bed being so narrow she can only lie on her side. But this simple way of living is so worth it! Our mortgage payment is only half of what if was before we did this!”

My sister at one time had the urge and I have looked at quite a few.

My take is most of the folks pushing them are trying to sell books and CD's.

Major problem is where you put them.

If your family has land (farm or whatever) that doesn't have zoning issues it may be something to consider but how is it really different than a single wide with wood siding?

To make it at all livable you still need water and power or you are just camping

For a young guy, or perhaps couple, I think it's awesome, if you can hack it.  But then I'm a total freedom kind of guy.  Part of that is my anti-ARFcom philosophy of living as cheaply as possible, and avoiding non-profit debt.  Don't buy depreciating assets with debt, don't get into debt unless it makes you more than the cost of the debt service, ect.  Absolutely don't buy shit you can live without with debt.

Which is strange coming from a Wall Street portfolio manager.  But people really do slave themselves to debt.  They end up no different than the chattel slaves, that still exist today.  Except they think they're awesome and they're "free-range" slaves.

They're slaves that can move anywhere they want, and do any job for an employer, that pays those who own them.

The only income that's really yours, is what's left after you pay the government and your lenders.

I agree, basically a high priced per square foot fad.

Single wide trailers and RV's are probably cheaper per square foot, have more room and the ability to be easily relocated or towed without destroying the house.

Hell those conversions of those Connex containers are pretty nice and you can get the basic can pretty cheap.

Another option if you are in the UK is to purchase and live on a narrow or wide beam canal boat.
I watch some You Tube vid's of several persons or couples who live and cruise the UK canal network.
Sort of tiny houses on the water, kind of neat as you can even cruise some rivers and no sea sickness.

It makes the world go around, and makes the select money.

Working is cool, doing something constructive and productive is awesome.  Just don't do it to pay interest, don't buy shit that will end up worthless, and won't make you feel good in the long run.  Short term finacial masturabation is just going to leave you messy.  Get off the wheel.  Don't be a slave.  It really is butt simple.

Your real income is what's left after taxes, interest, and consumables.  I've seen people with eight and seven figure incomes who are worthless.  I've seen people with five figure incomes that are free.

this is an interesting statement....

family member builds houses. some houses have basements. a poured concrete rebar reinforced basement is expensive. as much as these 'tiny' houses. i guess some folks might consider just digging a hole in the ground and maybe dropping a shipping container in there and that wouldnt be cheap either IF the area permitting powers would even allow you to do that.

the idea of some sort of underground bunker, storage room is something i'd like to have but its expensive and as a solution to also living in a tiny house, it aint realistic.
