Are these the ones with the stupid huge box flopping around on the side of the vehicle?

Yup…apparently it’s a “luggage box” the size of a briefcase. I guess a man could store his tampons in there…

Buy three that way you will always have one to drive while the other two are at the dealer for warranty work.

For reference I own 3 Land Rover Discovery 2’s and a Range Rover Classic.

That thing is not a defender. And the only saving grace of Range Rover is their easy to work on. Which is t the case because that thing is a nightmare to work on.

I had an ‘04 Discovery that had 1 issue in the 6 years I owned it and drove it into the dealer. Ask me about my Ford though.

Their resale value is shit though.

You can tell by the prices of the used Defenders in the UK what they think of the new "Defenders".

The prices of the used Defenders have gained because there is still a market in the UK and the world for a basic SUV.

Like others said should have called it a Discovery.

I’ll be sure to post here if I get one.

Drove one last week and dealer texts me photos everytime they get a used one.

Will probably order a bare bones model with only off road options. It will be cheaper than a lot of the Wranglers, Gladiators, and Broncos I see around here.

Wrong, as long as you PROPERLY SERVICE THEM (actually taking them to Land Rover mechanic, not a dealer or jiffy lube etc), they will serve you well.

I bought a 2007 RR sport brand new in 07, 133k miles, got at least another 75k in her. Fuck the haters.

My '08 just rolled 150k. Still looks new. Leather is soft/supple. Air suspension is original. Zero issues. I did a full cooling system at 110k. A wheel bearing at 130k. A heater core at 140k. Otherwise just normal maintenance. I tow my 8k/lb boat with it a few times per year. Did a lift a year ago with some 32" tires. Still a spectacular vehicle.

I'm building a Discovery 2 for myself right now. It'll be tough to let go of the Sport when the time comes, but we don't need 3 SUV's.

We almost bought a Defender last year, but my wife has been driving the Sport and wanted to go back to a BMW X5. I cant fault her. The turbo X5 is a lot of fun to drive. Like an overgrown sports car.

The TFL trail test of it compared to the new Bronco and a Jeep JL was an utter disappointment.

More Freelander, less D90.

I see tons of them on the road here, many with the bougie looking overland gear on them (the Rover pod is common).
Knowing they are more suited for snow and dirt roads then they are any real wheeling keeps them in the same position they have always occupied for me.
Kinda cool to look at but I would never buy one.

Lack of locking differentials and no optional manual kill it for me. Definitely not a true Defender. I like it, but IMO, that's where they went wrong. The only truly capable luxury truck is the Mercedes G.

This. My neighbor has had 4 that have all gone over 200,000 miles each and he says the same thing. We have 2 a 2020 Range Rover Sport and a 2014 LR4 and both of them have been far more reliable than the Mercedes we used to drive.

I will say they do have some interesting design quirks- the rear hatch/tailgate on the LR4 not having a mechanic handle is just bizarre... but all in all, the reliability issues of the more modern Land Rovers are greatly exaggerated for the most part.

Oh, I know about that rear hatch.... My LR3 had a failure there. The release rod came off of the latch. Try getting the door panel off when the door is closed. It was a $.10 fix once I got it open....

Kept that LR3 for 100k miles. The rear latch and a suspension air pump right at 100k were it's only failures. Great vehicle. That was my only truck for a spell. It towed my boat and camper all over the place.

I've been tempted to buy the kit from Atlantic British that gives you an internal handle.

I really like my LR4 for what I need- I'm not an off roader, but if I am camping or going to range and stuff is sloppy I know it will handle it easy enough. I was pissed when they rebranded the Discovery as a Ford Explorer looking thing. I love the boxy look of the LR4.... I was looking for a jeep when I got it but getting an originally $58,000 vehicle for the same price as one that was originally $35,000 was too good of a deal to pass up. That massive depreciation works well for someone buying used

Weirdly enough, I could sell it now for more than I paid for it as the used car market is so wonky now.

I can’t say I haven’t been looking,

About 25 years ago when I went from lieutenant to captain I went to a LR dealer to trade my 4Runner in on a Defender.

They had no new ones.  They had stopped importing.

When these came out I was going to get one.

The reality is, a Lexus GX will cost significantly less.  It will be a true frame on SUV.  It will have about half the industry average reliability issues, essential ranked as the most reliable brand.  LR is essentially the least reliable brand with over twice the industry average reliability issues.  At 3, 5, and 7 years the GX will hold 66, 56, and 46% of its purchase value and still be a dependable daily driver.  The LR will be at 60, 43, and 32% of its value and likely be a nightmare reliability wise to consider as a daily driver.  The GX is made in Japan.  A somewhat dated design but not dependent on much cutting edge tech and highly reliable.  The Defender is made in Slovakia but a British company known for electrical and computer issues and is reliant upon dozens of computer modules managing late tech.  It is a unibody.

Granted, the defender looks like a true old school rear door, rear mounted spare SUV.  The GX will have the ugliest grille on the planet and lost its rear spare for a poor rear door compromise.

Edit-
Resale values are based on historical overall brand, not the recent very strange market of no new inventory or odd spikes from discontinued vehicles like the original US defender or FJ cruiser.
