My 11 yr old son and I went to the OKCA Knife Show in Eugene, OR on Sat.  I believe it's the largest knife show in the US.  500 tables or so.  We called it quits after 5 hours, having seen about 65% of the show.  Pretty amazing.

We've gone before and I have plenty of knives, so I was planning on letting my son pick out a knife or two and mostly just wanted to look at knives and the historical displays and shoot the shit with knife folk.

We scored pretty well.  My son loves the Cold Steel Youtube vids . .  and although I'm personally not a Cold Steel fan, I do remember the joy I had as a 11 yr old buying knives that only a young boy could love, so I didn't try to steer him different.  He picked out a practically new Cold Steel Ti-Lite and a Cold Steel kukri machete.  Both are pretty sweet in actuality.  I like the Ti-Lite quite a bit.

Also, knife guys LOVE seeing a kid with a passion for knives and they hooked him up.  A couple of custom Queen/Schatt & Morgan guys gave him a "US Custom" stockman.  Chinese made, from the same manufacturer as Rough Rider, but not bad. Lynn Olson of Lynn Olson Knives in San Rafael CA (http://www.myknifedealer.com/), gave my son a CRKT Crawford Kasper folding fighter, which is pretty badass.  Gary Fadden, of Al Mar Knives gave him a little cheapo non-Al Mar slipjoint that will make a great tackle box knife.

Gary is also a good friend and he gave me a Al Mar mini SERE, which is pretty sweet.

But the cherry on the knife sunday was yesterday, when a package showed up in the mail - apparently I won a doorprize of a Coast Knives FX350 framelock knife.  I think they sell for $25 or so, but still pretty sweet to have one show up in the mail unexpected.

So 6 knives and a machete and we spent less than $60.   Got to talk with good friends and saw a lot of really cool stuff.

The Coast knife looks like this:

So far I like it quite a bit.  Big, sturdy framelock.  G10/Zytel type handle. Will make a good backup camp knife to stash in the camp trailer.

And of course, the Mini SERE is pretty badass - Japanese made, VG10 blade, similar in quality to tier 1 Japanese Spyderco stuff, if not better.  I have a full sized one, too - as well as a full auto SERE made by Benchmade, but the mini is pretty cool.  It looks like this:

Had a great weekend.  @MaxxII and his buddy drove up here to check out the progress on the kukris I'm making and to get a behind the scenes look at things.

Progress was made.  Beers were killed (In a Wisconsinable manner).  AKs were put away.

So a buddy and I drove up to the North pole to visit Kuraki, see his shop, learn things and drink beer.

As a person who appreciates a good blade, but has rudimentary knowledge of exactly what all goes into making them, this was eye opening.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for those of you making your own blades, it's a tremendous undertaking. I dont see myself going down the rabbit hole to start making my own blades. I have to get into reloading first.

Kuraki had just finished making the scales on that Kukri, and had not shaped it or finished the guard yet. It is one of two. I'm excited to see them when they're finished. I wish we'd had more time up there to see what all Kuraki could do and what all goes into making blades. This was flat out an amazing trip for my buddy and I.

I need to post a picture of the bayonet he made....it's freaking awesome!

Thanks again Kuraki for the hospitality and your time.

I have to be honest, the folder he made was very impressive. Gentleman Folder is an appropriate term for that one IMO. It looked like an elegant Kwaiken for someone who wanted a nice pocket knife that wasnt a tactical style folder, but could easily take a beating or be used for self defense. My buddy and I played around with it while Kuraki was in the other room doing some sort of bladesmith wizardry or Jedi stuff with a grinder, (he only had one respirator, and I didnt want to be too forward on the first date and offer to share with him) so I dont know exactly what he doing in there...

But the knife was tight, and the lock up was positive. The flipper/folding mechanism was smooth and easy to work. The knife was light in the hand and was easy to change directions with. It was a knife that could be carried daily and not be a tacti-cool type of folder. If he wanted to,  I suspect he will sell several of them.

Weather was interesting....Highway 91 and 39 ate ALOT of semi's and people who drove faster than the conditions allowed. No kidding, between the trip up and down we saw about 20 Semi's and about 25-30 cars/SUV's in the ditch. And by the ditch, I mean 20 feet or more off the road.

We were going to stop and help the first couple cars we saw, but then a herd of Polar Bears led by a Yeti came out of the woods and ate the occupants of the stranded vehicles. We didnt stop after that.

I had not realized Wisconsin was so close to the arctic circle (of death). Nature is scary.

Anyone who is interested should absolutely take Kuraki up on his offer. The man is a wealth of information and has a natural teaching style that makes it easy for nitwits and clueless people (like myself) to follow along and understand what he is talking about and doing. I would expect that people with knowledge of the art of Bladesmithing would follow along and pick up more than we did.

He's also got a warped sense of humor that I could relate to....and he has good taste in beer...so he's got that going for him.

All jokes aside, I dont know a damn thing about Bladesmithing, but I do know about knives that take a beating while being used hard with a purpose...Kuraki makes good stuff. I'd trust my life to anything he made for me to carry into harms way.
