I wouldn't say a clone but the Randall style is done by a few makers.

I'd check Blackjack knives. They do a lot of similar styles.

Mike Stewart is a prick, but at least the A2 steel is a better usable steel than the Randall steels. just don't store the knife in the sheath.

Any explanation for a non-blade nerd?  Is it like the 1911 overpriced nostalgia for outdated tech thing?

I have an Esee Izula and an Esee Junglas.  I'm looking for something lighter than the junglas in the 4-6 in range and I liked the model 15 style.  The Junglas is great for truck camping, but I always end up leaving it in the truck when I'm hiking.  The Izula is great for hiking, but it would be nice to have a bigger knife when hiking in to a camp.

I stumbled across the "Utah Special" combat woodsman from Flatrock Forge that looks to fit the gap I'd like to fill.  Any input on that option? (I think the owner is a member here)

Attachment Attached File

I'll take a look at the blackjack that several have suggested as well.

I'd just get an Esee 4, but I'm interested in trying something different.

Hair: yeah I didn't notice until after posting the pic! Everyone in my house but me has long hair, there's no escaping it.

Watch: I've come to realize that I really like the vintage skindiver style. I saw some articles mentioning that one and then saw one available LNIB for a decent discount below retail, figured I'd give it a try. The brand is owned by Fossil now but maintains a legit Swiss production facility and the watches appear to be faithful to the brand history.

That's a good one, too.

Supposedly the one-off convertible in You Only Live Twice was used because Connery's head stuck up too much to fit in the car. At about the same height (6'2") I wouldn't fit in the damn thing either.

If you decide on a -4, get the HM version. I hate the handle on my 4 so much I designed and built a knife the same size package but with a handle that doesn't suck and a blade that doesn't have a giant choil and it ended up being a 5" bladed knife with a decent handle. Lol (not really Randall or esee style though)

I handled a HM esee 4 and it's a way better design than the standard 4.

Yes, overhyped nostalgia. But unlike the 1911, there is really nothing special about it and the steel is long since passed being acceptable. Still don't understand the nostalgia. No one has ever explained it. It's just something they want. If it's the design you like, get it from someone else.

While I am not a fan of Mike Stewart (blackjack), I'm even less a fan of the one you mentioned. Overpriced and a bit full of himself. At least Mike Stewart is just full of himself. And he does have some reason to be. Still, arrogant prick.

There are some good options out there these days, with better steels. That's not to say you need the latest trendy steel, but there are steels out there that will outperform the steels used by Randall everyday. Of course, if it is a collectible piece you really want just for the name, there is nothing to do but wait five years.
