I have never liked orange handled items. Strike me as too garish.

But just this year during fall yard cleaning, after throwing my knife down multiple times and wasting a fair amount of time searching for it each time so it didn't get thrown out with yard debris, I started thinking maybe orange wasn't such a bad idea.

Where did you buy an Appalachian that had the wrong stock quantity?

Yeah, the mini strikes me as too stubby, especially with that handle shape.

The factory micarta thing is complicated with Emerson. Only limited runs, dealer exclusives or customs. Mostly dealer exclusives it looks like. So you have to find a dealer that does the micarta version you are looking for.

Ye Olde Cutlery Shoppe doesn't repeat special runs. Each run is a different knife. But they have done the micarta a number of times on different knives.

Tactical Elements has done a few different runs with micarta IIRC. Some commanders, mostly 7s.

Action Concepts on ebay is the only one I know of that has done micarta and bearings for a couple runs, in the Sheepdog. If I had to guess, they will do another run this next fall.

There are a few other companies that have done limited runs. But it is a crapshoot what will be offered and what spec. Usually one of the more popular models. As much as I like the Appalachian visually, I don't think their Bowie style blades are among the best selling, so less likely to be done as a special run unless someone like Ye Olde Cutlery picks it up as they do special runs of knives that were more limited (they are hoping to do the Conjurer next).

Another consideration, as Op noted, the factory micarta scales are less shaped than the custom made counterparts. So unless there is something else about a special run you really want, like the S35VN that comes on some of them, you may be just as well or better served getting a regular production run knife and having micarta scales made to your tastes. You can get a good Sheepdog on the secondary typically $180-200, they are one of the more popular models, so more out there.

Only the Emerson flippers have bearings. Sheepdog was the first. I don't have any flippers but have handled them. They are smooth. But honestly, once I swapped washers in my other Emersons, they are also very smooth. I have to be careful that my Hattin doesn't chop my finger off when I close it.

If I know what you are looking for I can keep an eye out.

Go with the fullsize. I was toying with getting the 85 when I got mine and others had recommended going fullsize because they still aren't that large of a knife, to begin with.

Had a bit of a spastic moment and went overboard on the syrup this morning. Haven't had bacon in a while, really hit the spot.

Plain Jane PM2 from the seconds sale for $53. The only thing I can find is that the action is a little stiff (or had a touch of side to side play if you loosen it to drop shut). I have it just tight enough for no play right now, I'm thinking about loosening it up by like 1/10th of a turn and using it for a while to see if it will break in. Might also do a super light polish on the washers.

Texas State Surplus Store in Austin ( where they take confiscated stuff) has a good amount of Spydercos. I always look through them for a matriarch or civilian type knife but there’s always some good ones for like $30. They have so many different models it’s hard to tell what’s a diamond in the rough.

70 is tiny, it really serves no practical purpose unless you live in a restrictive jurisdiction.

85 is OK.

ZT has MAP pricing. If it was priced too well then it could be a fake. That knife is counterfeited a lot.

I remember all that, just couldn't remember if you had decided on the 2 or 3. I thought 2, but thought the TRE was small, so your reference to the 3 threw me.

Was it that long ago though? I thought it was earlier this year, maybe 6 months ago? I am getting old...

Skip the Ravencrest, overpriced Chinese junk. If you want a Chinese OTF, Lightning. But try to get the Taiwan version, I think they still do both. Microtech is still where it is at for OTFs. Solid product for the money.

Sometimes Amazon has really good deals on knives. Saw someone explain it once. Something to do with their software, items out of stock, then coming back in, pricing goes wonky until someone steps in to manually re enter the MAP pricing from ZT.

JABA is also correct that there are a fair few fakes out there, pretty good ones on that knife. Amazon polices them when reported, but things still pop up anew.

Been waiting on this for a couple weeks

Wasn't sure if it would be my thing, but reading up on it, they said they were only doing one run because the difficulties to execute the design were just too much, it was seven years in the making. Figured, should be easy to get my money back if it didn't pan out and there were a lot of design features I liked. They usually have their stuff made in the US, but for this one, I heard after purchasing that they said they had to "off shore" it to make it happen.

nice presentation. embroidered.

https://i.imgur.com/g5lg27tl.jpg

My initial thought when I heard off shore was WE or Reate. Someone else mentioned Maniago. PDW is staying tight lipped.

https://i.imgur.com/Afpo3Mwl.jpg

This is not WE or Reate. Or I would be very surprised to learn it was. I've handled enough of those.

https://i.imgur.com/OjORzxrl.jpg

It is very nicely done, but there are a few very very minor imperfections that I don't think WE or Reate would let slide. Well, maybe WE would, but this doesn't feel like a WE in other ways. There is a small scratch in the finish of the bolster lock and there are a couple tiny tiny voids in the G10 where they don't touch the liners on the edge. My finger nail just barely catches in a few places where the G10 meets the Ti on the face of the scales. Not trying to nitpick, just doesn't feel like this is WE or Reate production. Gonna go with Maniago, but not Viper. I believe someone was suggesting Lionsteel. I have not handled a Lionsteel, but from what I have seen and heard, that would not surprise me.

That aside, this is a neat design, lot of thought went into details, which is to be expected, PDW is a design company. Feels great in the hand, much better than expected. It is light, but not so light that it feels cheap or flimsy. Solid, but not in a heavy clumsy way, more reassuring. Action is great, lockup is great, centering is great, size better than expected. The only design aspect that is a little bothersome given how much thought they clearly gave everything else, is that the pivot heads sit proud of the scales as the scales taper to the finger choils. End of the world, no, but it is inconsistent with everything else they were trying to do by design. Other than the items noted, everything else is perfectly flush.

https://i.imgur.com/y0Y3hBVl.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/TejmB8vl.jpg

Really well executed. I like it more than I thought I would.

https://i.imgur.com/y5DUGKSl.jpg

Kinda funky lock bar too. Stays straight with the liner and then cuts in at the last stretch.

https://i.imgur.com/ReARH5yl.jpg

Frankly, with it's size and how it feels in hand, it reminds me in a lot of ways of the A-100. Which I also really like.

The design though is from PDW here in the US. They have done a number of knives with variations of this design.

Oh, and it has GITD thumb stud inserts

now I can be one of the cool kids

ETA: It's their Invictus design. I had been looking at them a while back and was pulled in actually by their use of dendritic cobalt blade steel. Interesting stuff. I think there have been some Protech versions too. And if I find it, someone had a picture of how similar this design is to the A100 and a Gerber from way back, maybe the Applesomethingsomething?

I just like that nice sized fuller butter groove on the blade.
It will make a great steak knife.

Are the studs tritium or regular GITD?

What are GITD studs?

Get In There Dammit?

ETA - Glow In The Dark....duh!

Blender.
Or if it is really simple the Flashprint SW that came with the printer is sometimes enough.
