Just the other day with have a PRC government official call the TPP "anti-independent."

Today, the KMT comes out with this:
So...is this all a series of small mistakes or are the masks coming off?
I think that's a fair question to ask because things are getting wild out there in the South China Seas.

This next story is one that's interesting in this sense. It's about this guy tied in with Ko, the TPP leader, and Ko's corruption case. His bail was set at 5 million Taiwanese dollors and it was paid!!! Almost everyone else is either in detention or they've been released pending recall. This guy is different.
We will continue to watch this one as I think somebody is not who they say they are, and they will be exposed as a commie of all things!!

Yes, xd; it is a big deal. In fact, es ist vieleicht am gr  sten deal. If that doesn't show up, then let's go with "molto enorme."

And it's this for the following reason:
It means International Socialism is dead!!

The Europe is actually a pretty fascist land mass led by socialist party after socialist party.

China is a hyper-capitalistic state led by a communist party that can't get it's socialist act together.

There isn't a communist alive today that believes the "State will wither away." This is because there isn't a communist alive today that's going to give up political power for any reason.

Oh, I just realized that I haven't given a definition for International Socialism. In the early days of te 19th Century, these were the guys that believed in violent revolution to overthrow the various political regimes of their day.

Then came the Fabians, who wanted to take power through voting, and you can read that as no violent revolution.

And lastly we have the National Socialists who as a matter of pragmatism tend to form the "nation" around ethnic lines i.e. the pan-Germanic National Socialist German Workers Party, of Stalin in the USSR who was busy creating a pan-Slavic Nation instead of spreading international revolution every where like Trotsky wanted to do.

AND eventually, the Chinese will emerge as also National Socialists, but rest assured it will be okay when they do it.

So, yes, xd341!!!! It's a big deal!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to celebrate it somehow and avoid an alcoholic induced black out!! I'm not certain that's possible.

There's kind of a lot to unpack in there.  I don't disagree at all.  I tend to lean towards the notion that while political ideology is important, economics is what really shapes the world. Of course that's a two way street, ideology often influences economics.

My thought is that the way I'm seeing things shape up economically around the world, Europe is going to have to choose between the western hemisphere and parts of the east, like Japan and Australia, or China's sphere.

You'd think it would be an obvious choice but Europe has a habit of making really dumb decisions.  My guess is they try to walk the line.

I think that the main job of an ideology, any ideology, is to make certain no one makes the obvious choice, only the ideological choice.

I know my head hurts right now, but I can't think of an ideology that's simpathetic to an adherent in going agaisnt the grain, thinking outside the box, finding a new perspective. Any of this is some form of subversion and/or heresy which is always a present and clear danger to an ideology.

I don't want to stray too far out of the Thread, but the story of Copernicus always comes to my mind. The guy was given the job to fix a problem; he comes up with the solution (which on the Iberian Peninsula  centuries before, this solution already had a mathematical "proof" by a guy I named my computer that I'm using right now after this same guy), and then found himself in trouble for solving the problem his bosses wanted him to solve. There wasn't just one line crossed in one ideology, there were many lines crossed in many ideologies. What pushed all the bullshit aside was the need to get "treasure" from the "New World" to Europe more efficiently and precisely. With the amount of money involved, all the ideologies involved didn't stand a chance!!!!

very good!! But sorry to hear that your delivery was treated as the usual!!!

Just remember that the beer is bottle-conditioned, so you either stand it up or decline it at an angle so the sediment can drop back to the bottom of the bottle. AND POUR into a glass large enough for the bottle. Tipping and retipping the bottle will mix the sediment in with the beer, and like I said before, not everyone likes the taste of dead yeast.

I have a update on a story we were covering earlier in the year. The board outline is that it took place in the Philippines. The Police raided a warehouse and a gambling house owned by a company. They found PLA uniforms and various types of Chinese equipment, etc. It would turn out that the Mayor of the city where this took place was a ring leader with dual Philippino/Chinese citizen ship. We're all completely shocked by this. Let me look for our shocked faces:

I'm going to combine two stories from al-jazeera into one post for the sake of efficiency:
Fugitive former Philippines mayor Alice Guo arrested in Indonesia
Fugitive former mayor Alice Guo back in the Philippines to face Senate

Alice Guo, a former mayor in the Philippines accused of links to Chinese criminal syndicates, has been arrested in Indonesia.

The Ministry of Justice said Guo, who also has Chinese nationality and goes by the name Guo Hua Ping, is wanted by the Philippine Senate for refusing to attend a congressional investigation into her alleged criminal ties.
View Quote

She has denied the allegations, insisting she is a natural-born Philippine citizen, facing "malicious accusations".

Which is why she fled, Gentlemen. She was looking for the real criminal master mind in Indonesia.

Guo, the former mayor of Bamban town about 100km (62 miles) north of Manila, was arrested at 11:58pm on Tuesday in Tangerang City in Jakarta. A video shared by Indonesian media on X showed her being led along a white-walled staircase by enforcement officers.

Philippine law enforcement agencies, including the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC), last month jointly filed multiple counts of money laundering against Guo and 35 others before the Department of Justice.

The Senate began an investigation into her activities in May two months after authorities raided a casino in Bamban town and uncovered what law enforcement officials said were scams being perpetrated from a facility built on land partially owned by the mayor.

The discovery prompted a public outcry and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr later ordered a ban on online gaming operators over their suspected links to organised crime.

Marcos has also promised to go after those who "aided in her flight".

Alice Guo, a former mayor who went on the run after she was accused of links to Chinese organised crime, has arrived back in the Philippines, where she is expected to be brought in front of the Senate.

Philippine media reported that Guo travelled on a chartered jet from Jakarta, where she was arrested for immigration offences earlier this week, and was accompanied by Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos and Philippine National Police chief, General Rommel Francisco Marbil.

In brief comments at a news conference after her arrival, she said she had been the target of death threats. She spent most of the time with her back to the media and looking at the wall.

Abalos promised to provide security for the former mayor but urged her to speak out.

"Disclose all the names in order to serve justice and so all this ends. That is the only way we can help her," he said.

Story from Malaysia:
Malaysia probing leak of classified Chinese note over South China Sea
Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said it is investigating the leak of a classified document China sent to its embassy in Beijing in February following the publication last month of an article in a Philippine media outlet.
View Quote

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported on August 29 that China had sent the Malaysian embassy a diplomatic note to stop all oil exploration and drilling activities at Luconia Shoals, which lie about 100 kilometres off the Malaysian state of Sarawak.

Quoting the note, the paper reported China claiming Malaysia's activities "infringed" on its sovereignty.

The shoals are some 1,300km from Hainan Island, China's nearest major landmass.
View Quote
1300K is 808 miles in manly distance.

Malaysia's Foreign Ministry noted that Beijing and Kuala Lumpur had committed to resolving the South China Sea dispute peacefully.

"Malaysia's stance on the South China Sea remains unchanged," the statement said. "Malaysia will continue to defend its sovereignty, sovereign rights and interests in its maritime areas   This approach aligns with the universally recognised principles of international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea [UNCLOS], 1982."
View Quote
What the fuck else is Malaysia going to say!!

It's easy to understand why the diplomatic cable was leaked. Malaysia has been either publically siding with China or strangely silent even though they're going through the same shit with the PRC. It was only ever a matter of time before they would be exposed.

ETA: I forgot to add it's the same with Brunei and Indonesia.

How many warehouses in the Philippines, Taiwan and the US have equipment waiting for the Chinese for when they decide to attack?  Finding these caches should be a top priority for all 3 governments.

“The inspector general also found that some of the 2.7 million rounds of ammunition Taiwan received had expired and were sent "in a mix of original, loose, and incorrect packaging."

The report says that the delivery of "unserviceable equipment" risks "degrading Taiwan's confidence in the United States."

China moves to play 'Okinawa card' over Japan's Taiwan stance

Will China's strategy toward Japan change significantly? This serious concern has inevitably arisen following the recent violation of Japanese airspace by a Chinese military Y-9 intelligence-gathering plane off Nagasaki prefecture in late August.
Early this month, another unprecedented Chinese move also emerged.
A researcher familiar with the two countries' relations told Nikkei that China had now set its sights on Okinawa prefecture in its Japan strategy and "is about to take a first-ever dangerous step."

If I may.....
This is an important story.

There have four periods of Foreign Policy for the PRC.

The first is the Maoist Period. This is the origin of the 9-Dash Line, BUT Mao also renounced any and all claims and histories towards Japanese territories.

Then we had Deng Xioa Peng, who actually was only ever a President of his Bridge Club, and after the Sino-Vietnamese War of 1979 declared the PRC to be a non-hegemonic power and denounced such policies. That lasted until the '90s.

With the dissolving of the USSR, the PRC came to the conclusion there was now a power vacuum. Those old enough may remember that American leftists, especially the leftist women, felt guilty about the US being the World's only Super Power. A title they had nothing to do with, but one they would mobilize against to end it, and their Champion, Pres. Obama, did a bang up job achieving it.

During this time, in the '90s to 2010, we have the "we're not a blue water navy" marketing; the denial of expansion into Africa, but the expansion into Africa; the denial of border wars with India and Nepal, increasing border wars with India and Nepal; the piracy of the Straight of Malacca which ended when the Indian Navy got involved over the objects of the Indonesians.

Now we have Comrade Xi, and we have very serious movement towards achieving the expansion into the 9-Dash Line. Rather full circle.

Also, this isn't the first time the Chinese have made the case that the Chinese were everywhere first and inhabited and settled everywhere also. During the third period of the '90s to 2010s, there was a great expansion of research institutions with the similar goal of when the Nazis did this looking for Aryans except the Chinese were looking for Chinese all across the Pacific into North and South America, plus, at the time, they claimed that the people who crossed the land bridge at the Bearing Strait 10,000 to 20,000 years ago were actually Chinese as well. And yes!! They've claimed all the lands as theirs...at one time or another.

Regarding the point where I wrote that the 9-Dash Line policy was coming full circle, the article GoldenMead posted says this:
But discussing the status of Okinawa again completely contradicts the Chinese government's past position.

In the 1960s, Mao Zedong, the founding father of "a new China" -- the People's Republic of China -- recognized Okinawa as part of Japan and clearly supported its return to Japan from U.S. rule, which lasted from the end of World War II to 1972.

If China raises the issue of Okinawa's status in earnest in the Xi era, it will be defying even this conventional wisdom within the Communist Party ever since the Mao era. And if such a move is taken as an indication of China's readiness to direct its comprehensive maritime military strength toward Okinawa, the regional geopolitical situation will become tense quickly.

Okinawa hosts many American military bases under the Japan-U.S. alliance. If China changes its position on Okinawa's status, it will have to prepare itself for even a clash with U.S. forces.

China is apparently poised to counter what it sees as Japan's interference in the Taiwan issue by bringing up the status of Okinawa. But politicizing historical studies in such a way is dangerous, and such a move could backfire.
It's a very good point. Carmel has posted several articles over the years acknowledging that Xi wants to get much done for the 75th year of the founding of the PRC. (The Century mark for the CCP came and went a couple of years ago - the rest of the World barely noticed which I believe was the intent of Xi.)

I'd also like to state one more time that any attack on Taiwan or the Philippines will mean that Okinawa gets hit and hit hard. When you see the map, you know why!!

Chinese Coast Guard Story!!!
Taiwan turns away 4 Chinese coast guard ships for second day running
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   Four Chinese coast guard ships approached a restricted area near Kinmen for the second day in a row on Saturday (Sept. 14).

A radar tracked the vessels near restricted waters at 8:50 a.m., leading the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) to dispatch four of its patrol boats to the area. Similar to an incident Friday (Sept. 13) morning, each Coast Guard ship shadowed a Chinese vessel and broadcast warnings in Mandarin and English, Radio Taiwan International reported.

The Chinese ships left the area about two hours after they arrived. The incident was the second of its kind in September, coming just one day after the first, and the 40th of the year.

The Coast Guard accused China of acting against the spirit of next week's Mid-Autumn Festival, a major holiday on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The Sept. 17 holiday should be an occasion for families to get together, not for provocative actions by China to disrupt peace and stability, according to the Coast Guard.
View Quote
So after searching for two hours, the four ships found no one to rescue...again!! For the hundred millionth time. All the World's other Coast Guards find all the people who need rescuing all the time. Very sad.

Got another propaganda story!!! never get enough of those!!!!
AIT denies US concern about Ko Wen-je graft case
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) has denied the United States is concerned with the investigation into graft allegations surrounding former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (   ), reports said Saturday (Sept. 14).
View Quote

A former Taiwan envoy to New Zealand, Dale Jieh (   ), said on a talk show that AIT would intervene if the investigation into Ko continued, per CNA. His comments were later echoed by Hsiao Hsu-tsen (   ), the director of the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation.

However, AIT said Saturday that it respected Taiwan's democratic system and its support for the rule of law. A spokesperson emphasized that the U.S. did not involve itself in Taiwan judicial cases.

An unnamed foreign policy expert in Taiwan said no democratic nation would express concern about the Ko case and about Taiwan's judicial affairs, according to the CNA report. Criticism looked like an attempt by China to sow distrust about the U.S. and about the fairness of Taiwan's judicial system among the public, the source said.
View Quote
Just to remind everyone that the American Institute of Taiwan acts as an embassy for the US, and just to remind everyone that there isn't an embassy on the Planet Earth that has powers "to intervene" in a host nation's governmental process except for the PRC in the US when democrats occupy the White House.

Speaking of double-dealing Chinese! We have this story about what looks like to me...sabotage!
Taiwan conducts maintenance project for Clouded Leopard armored vehicles
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   Taiwan's Army has allocated NT$1.48 billion (US$46.31 million) to maintain its Clouded Leopard armored vehicles.

The eight-wheeled armored vehicle is currently used by the Army and Military Police, with over 670 in total. However, multiple issues have emerged since entering service. To resolve these problems, the Army will carry out a fleet-wide inspection and maintenance project from 2025 to 2029, per Liberty Times.
View Quote

In the summer, it was reported that 50 vehicles had faulty armor due to poor welding, including ones made within the last two years. The Army Command said the issues have been fixed, and the Armaments Bureau is working with contractors to conduct a thorough review.

The Armaments Bureau said that the landing plates of 48 Clouded Leopards were repaired and the front slant plates of two vehicles have been completely replaced. Testing confirmed that the armor remained intact. However, as the maintenance project progresses, it is clear additional issues still need to be addressed, the bureau added.

To have bad welds go unnoticed, you need the help of bad welders and bad QC people. It's not a one man job.

Carmel! Great find!! Let's get some quotes!!!!

A former aide to Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who is now accused by the Justice Department of acting as a Chinese spy, went on a tour of the White House earlier this year, a White House official has confirmed to Fox News Digital.

Linda Sun's visit to the White House was facilitated by another Democrat, Rep. Grace Meng of Queens, and consisted of "a walking tour through historic rooms and [did] not include access to White House offices, personnel, or non-public information," the official said.

"Tours are available to any members of the public, through congressional offices, and this was arranged through that standard process, by Rep. Meng," the official also told Fox News Digital.

The New York Post cited a source as saying that Sun's tour in May came as she was already under investigation, and days after it happened, she posted on Facebook: "Tour of the White House [check emoji], See our favorite Congresswoman [check emoji], Tour of the Capitol with our favorite Congresswoman [check emoji]."
So, magically, Sun's name didn't come up on the list of people under federal investigation, or magically it was on there and magically even more, that fact was ignored.

A spokesperson for Meng told the newspaper that Sun and Meng took a photo on the steps outside the House chamber and that "Obviously, nobody knew anything about what she is now accused of doing which continues to be deeply troubling and shocking."

"If anything was known, her request would have clearly not been considered. The tour does not include the Oval Office, West Wing, interaction with officials or anything along those lines," the spokesperson reportedly added.

Authorities arrested both Sun, 40, and her husband, Chris Hu, 41, at the start of September.

Sun is charged with violating and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering conspiracy. She is alleged to have acted on behalf of the government of China and the Chinese Communist Party. Hochul fired Sun last year after her office discovered evidence of misconduct.

"This individual was hired by the Executive Chamber more than a decade ago. We terminated her employment in March 2023 after discovering evidence of misconduct, immediately reported her actions to law enforcement, and have assisted law enforcement throughout this process," Hochul's office said in a statement.

Just to refresh everyone's memory, The Philippine Coast Guard ship went on station back in April as the PRC was getting ready to start their land reclaimation operation.

For reasons not stated, the Philippines has withdrawn the ship and now the PRC establishment is taking a victory lap.

Here's a new reminder from USNI:
U.S. Will 'Do What is Necessary' to aid Philippines in South China Sea, Official Says
(This claim was initially publicized back in July of this year)

Maritime and aerial spats in the South China Sea between China and the Philippines, Washington's oldest treaty ally in the Indo-Pacific, will be a key talking point in high-level meetings between the U.S. Department of Defense and their Chinese counterparts.

A senior defense official told reporters Wednesday evening that Chinese actions against the Philippines will be raised during the upcoming U.S.-PRC Defense Policy Coordination Talks. The engagement was described as "an opportunity for us to be frank and candid with the PRC about the issues affecting the relationship and the concerns that we have," the defense official said. Other issues highlighted in the call included Beijing's support of Russia's war effort against Ukraine, operational safety and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

The senior defense official called Beijing's actions as a "threat to regional peace and stability," noting recent ramming incidents against Philippine Coast Guard vessels by Chinese forces at Second Thomas and Sabina Shoals,

"The United States will do what is necessary to support the Philippines," the official said. "The Philippines is our oldest mutual defense treaty ally in the Indo-Pacific. We've made very clear that the treaty extends to armed attacks on Philippine Armed Forces, public vessels or aircraft, including those of its coast guard, anywhere in the South China Sea. So we're watching further developments there very, very closely."

No additional details were available about comments made by Indo-Pacific Commander Adm. Samuel Paparo on the possibility of escorting and supporting Philippine efforts in the South China Sea, no details could be provided. Paparo said last month that a U.S. vessel escorting Philippine forces was "an entirely reasonable option" and within the limits of the 1951 U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty.

Despite the drastic increase in incidents between Manila and Beijing within the last year, the Philippines has yet to take up American offers of direct escort and assistance in its resupply missions. Although U.S. Navy maritime patrol aircraft and warships have been spotted in the vicinity of incidents, the noticeable lack of direct American presence leaves many questions about what the two nations define as an armed attack and tests the 70-year-old mutual defense treaty.

"Manila is trying to find the best approach to the situation in the South China Sea," Julio Amador, an analyst based in Manila, told USNI News. According to Amador, the decision to conduct "white-hull-to-white-hull diplomacy," referring to the Philippines' exclusive use of Coast Guard vessels in countering China, has made the country "reticent" in the deployment of its naval forces.

"Manila also wants to avoid any accusation that Washington drives its decision-making. Manila wants to show agency and do everything that it can before it accepts any aid from ally and partner," he said, noting Beijing's claims that their disputes with the Philippines are a result of Washington's supposed influence on the former U.S. colony.

This is how this last Thursday's article ends.
New flashpoints are also rising in the disputed region, with the latest at Sabina Shoal. Philippine Coast Guard flagship BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) has been stationed at the maritime feature since April 16 amid concerns about a Chinese artificial island reclamation attempt similar to those conducted at Subi, Mischief and Fiery Cross Reefs. A series of ramming and water cannon incidents around Sabina occured last month, with seven scuffles around and within the shoal during August alone.
The withdrawl of the BRP Teresa Maganua caught the USNI by surprise.

What to make of what's going on?

It's not good just by looking at it. No idea why the Reagan is leaving 3/4 of year ahead of the arrival of its replacement? No idea if they've already moved families and household goods?

No idea why the Philippines withdrew its ship from the Sabina Shoal?

This is quite a bit for one weekend.

This is strict propaganda!!! At least I'm pretty sure.

I couldn't find a Taiwan based "Democracy Foundation" in existence.

There is a Taiwan Foundation for Democracy that was started by the Taiwanese government as a non-partisan organization. Here we call them 501.c.3 corps.

After this weekend, I'm not going to dignify the story by posting a quote.

I have a score card with me doing the Math, but alas, no flight tracker:
2024/09/15 PLA activities in the waters and airspace around Taiwan
1.Date
6 to 6 a.m. (UTC+8) Saturday to Sunday, Sep. 14-15

2.PLA activities
7 PLA aircraft, 6 PLAN vessels and 1 official ship operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 2 of the aircraft  entered Taiwan's  southwestern ADIZ. ROC Armed Forces have monitored the situation and employed CAP aircraft, Navy vessels, and coastal missile systems in response to the detected activities.

When bad things happen to non-trustworthy governments...I'm finding it hard to get excited about this. The shame is mine.

A recent stand-off between Indonesia's coastguard and Chinese fishing vessels underscores Jakarta's struggle to defend its maritime boundaries, analysts say, with recurring incursions raising concerns about the nation's capacity to safeguard its waters amid rising tensions in the region.

The Indonesian coastguard (Bakamla) said it had spotted five Chinese-flagged fishing vessels on Tuesday anchored around waters located 22 nautical miles (40.7km) north of Tanjung Berakit, a key reference point for determining the boundaries of Indonesia's territorial waters in the South China Sea under international maritime law.

"Despite being contacted via radio, the five ships did not respond," Bakamla's spokesman Captain Yuhanes Antara said in a statement released on Wednesday. He said the coastguard initially assumed the "suspicious" ships were waiting to enter the port of Singapore.

Imam Prakoso, a senior analyst with Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative (IOJI), an independent think tank that monitors maritime security in the country, said the incident was likely not a one-off.

Sightings of Chinese fishing vessels are often reported in the North Natuna Sea, part of Indonesia's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the north of Riau Islands that falls within Beijing's so-called nine-dash line, within which it claims most of the South China Sea.

Indonesia is not a claimant in the disputed waters, but past incursions by Chinese vessels have created tensions in the otherwise congenial relations between Beijing and Jakarta.

n January 2023, China sent its largest coastguard vessels to patrol the Natuna Sea, which experts said was meant to send a signal to Indonesia and Vietnam as they finalised a 12-year negotiation to delimit their overlapping EEZs in the South China Sea.

"When the delineation lines are revealed to the public, that's when we'll see more Chinese research or coastguard vessels in the [Natuna] waters," Imam said.

China Coast Guard vessels were still reportedly spotted around Natuna recently, though they did not get into tussles with local authorities.

SeaLight, a research firm that monitors illegal incursions by Chinese ships into other countries' waters, said on August 30 that China Coast Guard 5402 "has been conducting intrusive patrolling operations within Indonesia's North Natuna Sea, just 100 nautical miles of Indonesia's Laut Island and among Natuna gas fields" for at least 48 hours.

Last month, IOJI alerted Bakamla to the presence of Chinese fishing vessel Fu Yuan Yu 8507 in the North Natuna Sea, which had turned off its automatic identification system (AIS) to evade the authority's radar.

Authorities in May seized Chinese-owned fishing vessel Run Zheng 03, which they said had been illegally fishing in the Arafura waters, off the coast of Papua, as well as forced labour of Indonesian and Chinese crew. The ship had turned off its AIS since February, IOJI said.

These incursions, while often, were not enough to fray the "solid and stable" ties between Jakarta and Beijing, Muhammad said.
Sealight was also mentioned in the 60 Minutes report that GoldenMead and realwar posted.

There's an amphibious exercise going on right now:
Attachment Attached File

TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   An American earth imaging company conducted an analysis last month of an amphibious training exercise in China's Fujian Province.

On Aug. 28, Planet Labs PBC performed a geospatial intelligence assessment of what it identified as likely a People's Liberation Army (PLA) amphibious landing drill in Fujian's Dacheng Bay. The company noted that this area is frequently used by the PLA for amphibious maneuvers.

The analysis revealed numerous amphibious craft approaching the coastline, accompanied by amphibious fighting vehicles. Planet Labs indicated that the vessels likely included a Yupen (Type 271) class landing craft participating in the apparent training exercise.

The firm also observed a significant concentration of military vehicles and equipment inland from the drills, which it suggested were likely tied to the ongoing training maneuvers.

On Sept. 4, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced that it had detected the PLA conducting a joint amphibious exercise at Dacheng Bay. According to the MND, the drills included fighter jets, auxiliary aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles working in coordination with amphibious vessels and roll-on/roll-off ships transporting ground forces.

The ministry emphasized that Taiwan's armed forces are closely monitoring the region's activities through joint intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations.

I think Taiwan may be the second to last Country to fly versions of the F-5 (excluding the T-38 versions). Soon, I guess it's just Brazil.
Taiwan's reconnaissance F-5 jets still operating
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   Taiwan will continue to fly its fleet of RF-5 jets in conjunction with its F-16Vs for reconnaissance missions.

The military decommissioned its aged F-5 fighters in 2023 and replaced them with the domestically built Brave Eagle trainer jets. However, it still operates the reconnaissance variants until delivery of the MQ-9B drones and MS-110 recce pod systems is completed, CNA reported.

The Air Force has allocated NT$33 million (US$1.03 million) for a multi-year project from 2023-2025, to carry out the RF-5's camera and avionics systems maintenance. Additionally, NT$1 million has been budgeted for technical support services to sustain the fleet. The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology will handle all repairs.

Taiwan has already procured four MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones from the US, and personnel have been selected and sent for training in the US, with initial training starting this year. Two batches, each consisting of two drones, are planned for delivery in 2025.

The Air Force is set to receive the first batch of US-made F-16V fighter jets later this month, a military official revealed last week.
View Quote
I guess we'll see.

Delivery of the jets was originally scheduled to begin last year but was delayed. The Air Force has been preparing for the jets by building the largest F-16 maintenance hub in the region and stockpiling advanced munitions.

Next year, 65 Air Force personnel will be sent to the US for F-16 training. The NT$36.64 million program will provide specialized tactical training for pilots and expand the pool of seed instructors.

The opening paragraph:
WASHINGTON   A Chinese company installed intelligence gathering equipment on cranes used at seaports across the US that could allow Beijing to spy on Americans and cripple key infrastructure, according to a new congressional report.

I remember years back, I was chit-chatting with my Boss, Dr. Ali (this guy's a genius; over 300 patents. He made a lot of money for the people he worked for!), and we were talking about with the state of chip board design back then, that you could literally have hundreds of transistors in a corner of a board, and no one would ever know.

Within about a week and a half, news broke the Hauwei had placed hundreds of transistors on their phone board that were not listed on the phone board's schematic. How did that get through US Customs Inspection?

I suspected something was up!!!
This is the Taiwan News for the same time period:
Attachment Attached File

TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   The Ministry of National Defense tracked eight Chinese military aircraft and two official ships around Taiwan between 6 a.m. on Monday (Sept. 16) and the same time Tuesday.

Four of the aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line in the country's air defense identification zone (ADIZ), according to the defense ministry.
So far this month, Taiwan has tracked 251 Chinese military aircraft and 127 ships.
There are descrepancies between the two reports with the same source. The only thing they have in common, except for subject matter, is the 24 hour period.
Could be we have new people at Taiwan News working this particular desk? That's the most innocent of explanations because I can't think of a benefit for the Taiwanese News to "lie to" or "confuse" their readership. Until this settles out one way or the other, we have 8 to 22 planes and 7 to 8 ships as normal. Anything less is below normal; anything greater is above normal.

You know, we seem to do a lot of business with Taiwan just in military sales. Yet, we don't deliver:
US announces potential sale of aircraft spare parts to Taiwan
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   The US announced the potential sale of aircraft spare parts to Taiwan on Monday (Sept. 16).

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said Taiwan requested to purchase "the return, repair, and reshipment of classified and unclassified spare parts for aircraft and related equipment" and related logistics and support. The package has an estimated cost of US$228 million (NT$7.26 billion).

The spare parts will boost Taiwan's "ability to meet current and future threats," DSCA said. The items will be transferred from US government stock, it added.

The announcement comes after a US Department of Defense's (DoD) Inspector General report found the DoD "did not effectively or efficiently implement accountability and quality controls for items delivered to Taiwan using the Presidential Drawdown Authority."

According to the report, the Pentagon shipped 120 of 340 rain-damaged pallets to Taiwan in December 2023. The pallets contained body armor that was "wet and moldy."

Taiwan also received 2.7 million rounds of ammunition, of which many were expired, loose, and improperly packaged.
The difference here is that the US Army won't be cherry picking airplane parts to ship to Taiwan.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) pointed out Tuesday's announcement is the 16th arms sale under the Biden administration. This reaffirms the US' "rock-solid" security commitment to Taiwan, it said.

"Taiwan is committed to safeguarding the well-being and freedom of its people, as well as preserving its democratic way of life," MOFA said. The ministry also pledged to deepen the security partnership with the US to protect rules-based international order and promote peace in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Ministry of National Defense thanked the US for the sale, saying it will "maintain the readiness and operational status of Taiwan's Air Force." The defense ministry said China's frequent gray-zone tactics continue to put pressure on Taiwan near its air and maritime borders.

Another indiginous weapons story:
Taiwan upgrading M60 tanks to beef up armored vehicle force
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   Taiwan has prioritized extending the service life of its fleet of M60A3 Patton tanks to ensure they can operate further into the future.

In 2022, the Army allocated NT$444.01 million (US$13.95 million) to enhance the tanks' fire control, targeting, and sighting systems. The upgrades are being carried out by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology and are expected to be completed next year, Liberty Times reported.

A separate budget of NT$7.25 billion was set aside in 2023 to procure new AVDS-1790-8CR engines for the aging tanks. Engine replacement is expected to be completed by 2028.
View Quote

In June, the Army signed a contract with the Armaments Bureau's 202nd Plant to secure new 105mm cannon barrels for the tanks. The project already has a budget of NT$836 and will last from 2025 to 2028. The Army will evaluate the wear and tear of existing cannon barrels and replace them to meet maintenance and readiness needs.

The military has 460 M60A3 tanks, which have been in service since the 1990s. It also has 450 CM11 tanks but they will not receive upgrades as yet.

The modified tanks are expected to bolster Taiwan's armored vehicle force. Between 2024 and 2026, the military will receive 108 US-made M1A2T Abrams tanks in batches.

We covered this a few days ago:
The military is also developing a new Clouded Leopard variant armed with a 105mm cannon. Following the production of two prototype vehicles, D1 and D2, the Armaments Bureau plans to the D3 prototype by next June.
