I was dead set against this movie. Thought it was a dumb idea, and it didn’t need to be made.
Saw it in IMAX, and I fucking loved it. Frankly, in some ways I thought it surpassed the original. Quoted:
I saw it in the theater. I went in looking forward to an action packed movie with a good story like the original Blade Runner.  Even people who love the first one (myself included), admit that it had flimsy, threadbare plot.

I read an article saying Ridley Scott has part 3 ready to go. If there’s anyone in Hollywood who can convince a studio to make a sequel to a bomb, it’s him. Besides, with foreign, and video sales, I think this will do ok in the end, especially with word of mouth.
Vudu has a disk and digital option where if you’re impatient like me you can buy the streaming version and then when the Blu-ray is available, Walmart mails it to you. So I did that.

I enjoyed it. The scene where his hologram melds with the prostitute was breathtaking.

Did not like it. The global warming bullshit was too much for me to get past. I respect pollution is bad. The first one addressed pollution (real), and overpopulation (not currently supported by many current population forecasts-not that most white guilters don't still believe it). This one still loved the overpopulation angle, but dug in to global warming myth
iirc somehow they equates warming with less water to boot. Funny that warming should cause higher sea levels |

And it follows exactly the predictions made by the first with regards to the environment. AND throw In a global EMP event that wiped out all magnetically stored data on top of that. It has its own internal logic that I’m fine with. I mean really, what do you think Los Angeles will look like in 31 years? |

I had just fled from over 19 years of spousal abuse when I went to see Blade Runner 2049. The theme of humanity in relationships in this movie hit me like a freight train.
Watching the portrayal of emotionally stunted "individuals" enjoy deeper bonding than anything I've yet experienced moved me in ways you can't imagine. |

This movie was awful. I want my 2.5 or so hours back. People were saying this was visually stunning. The original looked better. The story line was as flat as I have seen in a long time. Just horrible.

Unfortunately, in the theatre I watched it in, the volume knob was turned up PAST 11, all the way to 12. The scene where he stands in front of the giant nude hologram was SOFA KING loud, it actually hurt. I'd like to watch it again when I have control over the volume knob. |

I'm one of those who thinks it surpasses the first movie.
What I loved about it is that K lost everything to finish his mission. His job, his hope of being something exceptional, his girlfriend, his memories, his life. When he faces the Joi hologram near the end, you feel the impact of the totality of his loss. He's just empty... of everything but determination. I don't think you can have a good drama without a certain level of sacrifice. |

seriously--that scene is tremendously important, because it makes us question whether he and joi are any different. joi is loveable and devoted...because she is programmed that way in order to be a marketable companion ("everything you want to hear"). K is relentless, curious, and determined--exactly the traits you want for a policeman. isn't that convenient? the thing is, we develop an emotional relationship with joi because she gives a credible simulation of actually loving K. so does that mean that she's as much a person as K or deckard? this is the evolution of the story. first, replicants make us ask "what is human?" joi is the next phase: "what is sentience?" the obvious question is whether joi was actually capable of being murdered. edit: my post could have done without the emote. dunno why i'm so edgy lately. |
