On AKs in particular they induce malfunctions all time. (Very often by cramming rounds in that should not have gone in, that you then need to try to use the too short cleaning rod to get out.)

SCARs have also been known to have malfunctioned induced by them. (Mostly out of battery stuff on these.)

Not a fan of replicating charging handles to say the least!!

As you are well aware, you also can easily cause a malfunction by simply having the support hand on the "wrong" part of the hand guard.

I've shot AKs, M1s and such under perfect conditions, 70 degrees, no rain, all grass no dirt or mud. Still those things got snagged on clothes and gear.

Been working fine for me.

Then again, I don’t have sausage fingers, nor do I wear overly thick gloves in the winter. I prefer a merino wool glove liner under a normal pair of gloves.

I'm often amazed at what can start a shitstorm here and this is over of those times.

Mine all have one, BTW, but mostly because they all came with one. Any I intend to use to defend myself will have one "just in case". Don't think I've had to use it more than a handful of times.

I still like the FA on my rifles. Even though I am more "against" than "for". One is because of Nostalgia.... my issued M4 had one. Two, because my rifles are all "clones" (m4gery, mk12 mod 0, XM117E2, M16A) so I want them looking authentic. Three, because I think the AR looks more cool with one.

Also watching movies and the M16s and M4s in them always have FAs too.

Pushed it into battery with the FA.

Rifle wasn't properly lubed IIRC.

I've only used it once or twice, but then again I'm low speed and don't shoot hundreds of rounds a month with my ARs

The vigor with which some people complain about it, the spiritual redditors, makes me come down on the side of
keeping the forward assist for forever

Usually when the carrier sticks the round is loose but when the round prevents the carrier from moving forward the extractor gets a grip on the rim.

Because that's exactly what the BCG is attempting to do. You're just Assisting it. In a Forward direction.

My main issue is that people stupidly spend minutes jamming at the forward assist making an otherwise mundane issue much worse when taking one second to look, (or feel at night) would lead to a much better solution.

Training issue sure, but the forward assist is a jam enabler that doesnt really contribute anything.

Taking someones gun who has been jamming at the forward assist and clearing the issue by other means in an instant is always fun.

This is a great point. It's like people that tap/rack over and over again trying to fix a jam instead of doing something else.

Yes and he was always against them. Said they created more problems than they fixed. But he never used it in combat he was talking out of his ass.
