My wife gave me a dvd of The Big Trail. The scope of that movie shocked me. The sheer number of the cast; location; etc. That movie could not be replicated today. The cost would be prohibitive - no studio today could do it.

My favorite seems to shift from time to time.

Cowboy movie specifically, or western in general?

I love outlaw josey Wales and Unforgiven,  but neither are “cowboy” movies IMO. Neither is “the searchers” (great westerns all, though)

Lonesome Dove is great. Open Range is pretty good.

Rio Lobo was good. But for my two bits I think Rio Bravo was better. Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson were awesome. Anything with dean Martin is a clear winner in my book

My favorite western, and JW movie, is The Searchers. While I do love Rio Bravo, McLintock, Big Jake, Chisum, etc., The Searchers is by far my favorite movie of his.

I don't know if any of those are the "best"; but they are some of my favorites.

Tombstone is also one of my favorite westerns. Along with the "Man With No Name" trilogy, with Eastwood, and The Outlaw Josey Wales.

These have always qualified as westerns in my book. Even though there are no cowboys in them, they are about the West.

Ah, crap. I forgot that the thread title says "cowboy" and not "western."

Oh well, they're still fantastic movies that deserve an honorable mention.

Do you mean Destry with Audie Murphy or Destry Rides Again with Jimmy Stewart? Cuz the former is a B western at best.

Amd not a western per se, but it has the atitude and"feel" of one, The Highwaymen with Costner and Harrelson is fantastic

That one and the similar one with Dean Martin are a couple of "westerns" that I can watch every once in a while and not get tired of.

HONORABLE MENTION: Ride The High Country -with Randolph Scott and Joel MCrea. It was Randolph Scott's last movie; he retired immediately there after and drove home to North Carolina. Joel McCrea only made a few more.

Great movie. They both made enjoyable Westerns but this is probably the best movie either one of them made.

The Tall T and Ride Lonesome are also among Randolph Scott’s best.
