My brother was a hotshot and had friends who were smoke jumpers.
Useless knowledge of the day: During WW II the all Negro 555 Parachute Infantry Battalion was trained as paratroopers but never deployed overseas. They were used as smoke jumpers during the war and later in 1945 assigned to the 82nd Airborne. When the 82nd participated in their parade in NYC, its C.O. Gen. Jumping Jim Gavin insisted that they be allowed to wear all the decorations awarded to the 82nd when they marched in the parade. |

I understand wanting to use a more historical aircraft, and not the big C130, because they aren't used as much, but locally, the C130s were iconic coming out of Greybull. It rolled, inverted and crashed into the forest below, killing all three crewmen (pilot Steve Wass, co-pilot Craig Labare, flight engineer Michael Davis) aboard. The NTSB investigated the crash and determined that the accident was caused by a structural failure that occurred at the wing-to-fuselage attach point, with the right wing failing just before the left. The investigation disclosed “evidence of fatigue cracks in the right wing’s lower surface skin panel, with origins beneath the forward doubler. It makes the C130 a good option for us.

747s do retardant drops as well, as do DC-10s. But if your kids could get a ride in a Wyoming Air National Guard C-130 assigned to firebombing duty, I'd bet the kids would do em proud.
I'm partial to the amphibians, some fly along the water's surface scooping up water at speed til their tanks are filled. |

Museum of Flight and Aerial Firefighting https://www.museumofflight.us/ 2534 Hiller Lane Greybull, WY 82426 Pick an era, the start, WWII surplus, piston/prop aircraft, modern turbo props, modern jets. Great video to watch -  CalFire S2-T Airtanker Pilot (Fire Bomber) Interview with Abbie Crews! Great website - https://fireaviation.com/ C-130 MAFFS units 302nd Airlift Wing, Colorado Springs, Colo. The only AF Reserve unit. Guard units include the 153rd AW in Cheyenne, Wyo., the 145th AW in Charlotte, N.C. and the 146th AW based at Channel Islands, Calif. Perhaps a field trip to Cheyenne is in order. Sounds like a great project.  |

When I think of a firefighting fixed plane I think of the CL-415. I didn't know what the "CL-415" was for a long time but, I knew what the yellow and red water bomber was doing. In my opinion the CL-415 is the most iconic firefighting waterbomber in the world. It's been used all over the world by numerous countries for decades.

Darn it OP, why do you do this to me?
I have one word for you. SEAT OK, its an acronym, so four words, Single Engine Air Tanker. The 802 on scooping floats. I'm in my 50s, been flying for over 30 years and finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. I took an aerial application school last year, just need to get 100 hours of aerial application time and I can apply for these guys.   I just got a look at the numbers for this year... For clarification, I have two adjoining rooms, and 18 desks with 4 chairs at a center table in my 2D room. This is where most of my regular classes meet. So, 22 seats if we crowd it up. During the day, I teach a regular section of Art 1(x3), Art 2, and Vocational Art(x2), and have Art 3,4, & 5 sections along with each. Those are advanced students, many of which will work on this years projects. The 3,4, &5 sections meet in the 3D room next door, and work mostly independently. I pop back and fourth between classrooms, and of course our work area, and the hallway where the build usually takes place. My numbers for this year.... 159  Broken down through the day.... 18 per hour used to be the max number......or around 108 total..  23- 1st hour 28-2nd hour 23-3rd hour 30-4th hour 25-5th hour 30-7th hour It's going to be crowded.
