1) Can you link to what the dirt parapet and the crew served look like?

ETA:  This link posted by another member has an example:

2) So your sump is in the middle not the very side for both water and grenades?

I was taught to put the sumps on both ends.

Front and overhead cover should be 18".

Dig an escape too.

If you're intending to camo it (highly recommend), put things a bit away from it which will draw the eye of an observer away from the actual position.

And, building up the side facing your house will prevent someone from jumping in and firing on you - and, it will help mask the movements of those in the hole, too.

Lol, my mg range cards were usually scrawled on an opened up box that said bean component or maple nut cake.   Maybe a cardboard insert to a 7.62mm ammo box.

In infantry scool when the sergeant came around looking at the crew served fox holes, me being the shortest was always the person standing in the pit for scale, not my 6’ tall class mate.

In the Marines we dug horse shoe shaped pits not the army style corner pedestal type.

Our water table doesn't lend itself to fox holes unless its a very dry season.

Bagging a barn sniper hid could work though. My weird wife uses our barn for storage though.

1) Any advice on design?  I’ve searched the internet and there are a lot of designs out there.

2) Any advice on what to use for sandbags?  We have plenty of fill for them coming out of the hole.

Yes, he’s using sandals to dig but it’s actually going well.  There is a stream that separates me from my neighbor’s property.  It’s all woods around the hole.

Quoted for Truth.  You don't need grenade sumps, keep it fun.  Get some netting, fish or whatever, string it over the top via stakes and add some brush for sun shade.  Lay the brush such that you can remove/replace.

The time you save digging you will spend fixing the SEE.

OP, would you say that the watercourse that marks your property line is more of a stream, or brook?

Is it possible that the location of the boys field fortification might be positioned to view said flowing water and adjacent activities?

@Ben

I will post more later.  He’s physically fit and I did contact the NH APC chapter a while back but I don’t know what happened as I don’t recall getting anything more than a confirmation they received my email, and I haven’t tried contacting them again.  He is a great hiker, loves guns and we canoe. He is 16.  My 14 y/o is not as motivated but he’s getting there.  I actually do more with him outdoors.

I am reading every post and will get back to commenting on the responses.

A quick question regarding access:  Is the part in yellow an area where I can put steps to get into the “foxhole”?  It’s a bitch to get in and out.  My plan would be to ring the MG pit (if that’s what this ends up as) with sandbags.

I also think that this is turning out more as a machine gun pit rather than a foxhole, and the design is changing accordingly.

I want to put the soil into sandbags and they arrived so I am going to have both sons fill them for now to clean up the area around the hole.

I also bought a proper shovel and also a shovel to dig out the grenade sumps down to 2 feet, which will also help with water drainage.

I take Russian Systema and both kids also take classes.  I have a Cold Steel Russian shovel for them as well.  My sensei has shown us how to use it as a weapon.

More updates to come and I will quote and comment on responses that have asked for it.  Thank you!

@FightingHellfish

Year-round stream that is usually passable except with the spring run-off when it is treacherous.

One problem is the current location has a large mound of soil with small trees in it that blocks the view of a portion of the stream.  To take it down with be a lot of effort but I’m now wondering if it would be possible, or if it would make more sense to put a razor wire obstacle between the mound and the stream to funnel people into view on either side of the MG pit?

I am thinking that it may be better to extend the hole around the earthen mound and had PKM/RPD positions on either end.  I also have RPK’s.  Forgot to mention that (Romanian RPK’s in 7.62).

For our WW2 reenactment here is our overnight outpost for the ETO reenactment. Not textbook but it's what you get at 1900 with light fading.

Same event, in the Marine camp they dug an MG pit that will actually defend against a Banzai charge later in the PTO reenactment
