Zero, because they were pussyfooting around in all of those conflicts. I believe that that has ended and they will just move to total annihilation of civilian infrastructure and killing everything that moves now. We'll find out shortly.

Meanwhile, the opposite is true for Ukraine.  Their forces will be increasingly equipped with near top of the line Western gear.  The fact that Russia is 2.5x the size of Ukraine no longer matters because of the stark difference in combat effectiveness of Ukraine and the increasing technological edge that is manifesting.

Honestly, the only hope for Russia is if North Korea goes for South Korea or China goes for Taiwan.  Or maybe they can form a new Axis with Hungary and Germany.  But even then Poland would have tanks parked in Berlin in two weeks.

So I can see the Russians facing total defeat and collapse of their combat fronts and resorting to nukes.

Listen, I'm a cold war kid - I love seeing Russian tanks go boom just like everybody in here. I want Russia to lose this war. But they're not going to. Why? Because they are all in. They are about to roll over the fucking country, moving city to city, pounding them with MLRS and turning them into rubble one after the other, and the only question now is whether the world is willing to risk nuclear war to stop them. We are damned if we do, and the Ukes are damned if we don't. Hell they may pop tac nukes just out of spite, and if it seems like they are losing you can be effin SURE they will crack open that canned sunshine. UKRAINE. CANNOT. WIN. THIS.
So. What then. World War 3? Sorry, but my answer is YES. Unless some kind of miracle happens and Putin is deposed, the options remain either Ukraine is subject to a crushing defeat or Poland/NATO intervenes and we are in WW3. OK, there is another possible scenario, we pour weapons into Ukraine and draw Russia into a terrible quagmire, and they somehow brainlessly spend the next 3 or 4 years wasting the entirety of their armed forces beating their heads against a javelin anvil, Ukraine is turned into a wasteland that would make wartorn Syria look inviting, and nearly every man, woman, and child still in the country dies in a twenty-first century reprise of the Holodomor. So WW3 it is. I'm predicting it. I give it two more months, and it will go nuclear within weeks of Nato stepping in. Maybe days.

Prepare yourselves.

It seems pretty obvious what Russia is going to try to do.  Tie down UA in Donetsk, while pincer moves happen from the north from Karkov to Dnipro 100miles west of Donetsk.   At the same time attack from the south along the east side of the dneiper river.   This would trap a huge number of UA troops via the encirclement created.   My question is if the Russians have the numbers of troops or the logistics to make this happen?  Based on the last month or so, I say no, but who knows.  Were the Russians really holding back?

The Ukrainians pushed them completely out of the northern part of the country. They may not be able to recover the east, but the fact that they WILL remain Ukraine is a win.

I don't see the Russians being very very motivated at all.

For every three tanks knocked out, they abandoned two.

High end electronic warfare equipment that would provide great intelligence damage to their country...given up without a fight.

I don't see any reason in the last three weeks that they will go from "most unmotivated invading army since Mussolini" to something different.

I called out the losses a few days ago, no way UA has only lost their stated 3K+ but they have had a favorable W-L ratio so far. Hopefully they find a way to maintain favorable losses in the east.

Putin wants it back. Mother Russia NEEDS it back. He now realizes the Ukrainians don't want to come back, so he is willing to kill and terrorize them as he needs the natural resources.  Its been done before by Stalin.  Many many times.  A few years of sanctions and the loss of untold grunts are the price to be paid.

Frankly, this is the Soviets' SOP.  This is how they BUILT the sonofabitch and held it together. Get the resources, life is cheap. and these are his heroes.

the #Russiancolonialism twitter feed is worth a gander.

https://twitter.com/MaximEristavi/status/1495323069539405826

That was the original plan. Its hard to say where he is now.  He could cut his losses.  He could realize that if there is peace, in five years Ukraine is armed to the teeth.  So really his only shot is now.  Honestly, a loophole in the sanctions could convince him that he has the money to rearm and try again in five, but without weapons imports that's out.  He has been put in a a box of our making and he has to blast his way out. So logically, he masses everything in the Donbass.  He is going to pay alot and he needs to get his moneys worth.  He needs that coal and that gas to justify this.

In his mind he is a patriot, a Tsar, and the Russian economy is going to take a hit.  But its okay if he gets Ukraine back.  Its a long term win for the motherland.  He's a man knifing another man to steal a life boat for his drowning family.  Sanctions don't matter.   In his mind, he's the hard man doing the necessary. He's the man the Russians need.

What is illogical to me is that we should be realizing that if he is going to take his shot in a concentrated blitzkrieg, all in with the Army, Ukraine needs weapons. Lots of them.

Frankly, throwing in Afghanistan, this administration will get destroyed in November if we half ass the support and the Russians crush the Ukrainians.  Noone like a loser.   Its been all-in for weeks now.  For everyone.  Noone can walk away from this card table. Its going to get decided one way or the other on the battlefield.

It is in Mariupol. Russian troops were engaged, a couple of their vehicles were destroyed. It looked like 8 or so of them hiding by a red van, and the Ukranian troop lobbed a few grenades over a wall and shredded them. They put up zero defense, laid on the sidewalk and died.

At 1:10 I hear and see what looks like a Javelin being fired lofting high, so all this outgoing fire is Ukrainian?

I agree.

if you also mean to say that we should shrink away from WW3, I would disagree with that. Russia hasn't changed from the evil bastards they were over the last 100 years and  are proving themselves a blight on the face of the Earth. I think the position early in the war was that UKR wasn't our business too much and we could tolerate atrocities by secluding RUS from the West, but it is becoming apparent they are genocidal expansionists and further such incursions are inevitable. Let the natural conclusion come even if it is WW3, we can't be held hostage with a threat of nuclear war. if it comes it that, it comes to that. they won't win.

is it worth it? that has been the question so far. the answer is increasingly tilting toward Yes.

actually it would be better to get it over with now. they will have more and better nuclear armaments in a few years.

Firing artillery, especially without counter battery fire incoming, is one thing.  Organizing and conducting mass attacks and pincer movements is quite another. The Russian troops aren't any more motivated than they were a month ago.

It's funny that all the people who say "I'm not brainwashed" almost always say the same exact thing. Almost of they cut and paste it from someone else

So like page 10?

This is just a Ukraine rah rah thread. Nothing wrong with that just don't expect unbiased information if you are following it.

It is what it is.

90% of Arfcom is either indifferent or pro Russia.   This is really the only thread that is somewhat pro Ukraine.

GD is more pro Russia than my Russian wife. It's pathetic.

Because so many eat up Q crap…

Russia had major issue supplying their column that drove to 100 miles to Kiev.  I don’t think they have the operational or logistical skill to execute a deep envelopment.  I think the Ukrainians will hit their flanks and roll up both columns if they try that.

I don’t see a path to success for the Russians without using nukes - and that will only result in localized success because I think someone- maybe the US, maybe France, maybe the UK will nuke Russia in response.  No way anyone lets Russia nuke a non-nuclear country and get away with it.
