Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 21 announced the recognition of the sovereignty of the DPR and LPR. Russia recognized the republics in accordance with their constitutions within the borders of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions at the beginning of 2014. On February 24, Putin, in response to the request of the leaders of the Donbass republics for help, announced a special military operation. The DPR and LPR launched an operation to liberate their territories under the control of Kiev. |
