Not when the positions are taken, over run. Also the war in the east seems more to Russia's strengths: heavy HEAVY arty bombardment then tanks roll through. Any point on the front that gets the focused attack will lose ground and men.

I just hope the UA keeps whittling away at the Russian numbers until they snap and then UA can, hopefully, roll them up. That's when the casualties will really pile up. Once an offensive is spent, it is in real danger of a counter attack, which I think the UA is doing in many cases, on a small scale. I would love to see '41 level envelopments of the Russians.

Something I read from Ukrainian accounts is that bridges in the south had their explosives removed and therefore they weren’t blown. Army units were moved out of so 3 areas  and only border guards and territorial defense outfits were left to face the invasion from Crimea in some locations. Of course this could very well all just be hot rumors but the generals Zelensky had arrested early had to have done something wrong.
It will be disgusting if this turns out to be true.

Xiden is going WWIII over Kiev? Whoever is making decisions for that senile asshole would probably take the matter to a focus-group "how do you feel about nuclear war with Russia" and we would end up with Afghanistan X100. We'd be lucky if Xiden doesnt flee the country to China. And without the USA, England and even Poland will just posture.

BBC Fact checks Putin's Victory Day speech.

"Kyiv has declared that it could obtain nuclear weapons"
President Putin has repeatedly said Ukraine plans to acquire nuclear weapons as a justification for Russia's invasion, although there's no evidence this is the case...

"There was every indication that a clash with neo-Nazis and Banderites - backed by the US and its junior partners - was unavoidable"
President Putin has frequently claimed the presence of neo-Nazis in Ukraine as a justification for Russia's invasion.

At the last parliamentary election in 2019, support for far-right candidates was just 2% - far lower than in many other European countries...

"The Nato bloc launched an active military build-up on the territories adjacent to us... We saw how military infrastructure was being rolled out, how hundreds of foreign advisers started operating. Regular deliveries of cutting-edge weapons from Nato countries were deployed"
It (NATO) also says that further Nato military activity in eastern Europe has been in response to Russia's own build up near Ukraine, which went on for many weeks before it invaded in late February...

Question is are the Ukrainians getting that longer range arty to the front and using it correctly? When you have artillery that outranges whatever the enemy has its huge.

You think that the Ukrainians don’t have the same or now better equipment? That they didn’t also go to the same schools? The Soviet strengths were American lend lease and a limitless supply of bodies. Ukraine has the first and neither has the second, but Russia acts like they have it…

Biden isn't calling any shots in the US.   I don't know who is but so far they've done a pretty damn good job of providing intelligence, weapons and probably advise to the Ukrainians.    And Russia is paying a big price for it.

Russia wants it because owning it would allow them to claim a big chunk of the black sea. Ukraine need to get it back for the same reason. Tactically insignificant, strategically vital for the postwar landscape

Strategically it's significant but it's a death trap. Neither side is going to occupy it for a long time while this continues. Anyone who tries to set up shop is going to get killed.

I find it somewhat humorous because Russia is acting like the Lost Ark of the Covenant is buried on Snake Island.
It should’ve been obvious way sooner that they can’t project power there.

Doesn't bode well for NATO. I'm not sure that Russia couldn't steamroll  Europe. It would soon be Poland standing alone. And the Ukraine. France wants to stay out of it and Germany's got nothing. GB's not going to jump in to save the continent. If Russia ignores Finland, not much else in their way.

Except the US, of course. I wonder what we'd do if France and Germany opted out.

Honest question, but considering their tactics in Crimea (and recently captured areas) of exporting natives and leaving desirables or bringing in Russians…how much appetite is there for the “people of Crimea” to join Ukraine once again? While I don’t disagree with Zelensky’s/UA’s stance, would UA forces simply be finding themselves on the outside looking in just like Russian forces when they came into UA expecting open arms?

Genuinely asking as I don’t know the current state of Crimean politics.

Figures I’ve seen are about 4/1 in US favor.

I don’t doubt the UA figure of 25k dead Russians at all. I only saw a fraction but based on cooked vehicles with fatty char inside and dead Russian dismounts, bloody gear etc, their number might be low. It wouldn’t surprise me if 30k were Kia. Maybe more if you include missing. Total casualties have got to be nearing 75-100k

Let's see. Russians act like the Ark of the Covenant is buried on Snake Island.

What do Putin and his oligarchs value over anything else in the world -- more than the Ark of the Covenant?

How could a little place like Snake Island allow them to control that?

Total, OMV, Repsol, Turkish Petroleum Company (TPAO), Shell and ExxonMobil are all interested in what lies under the Black Sea. TPAO estimates there are up to ten billion barrels of oil in the region, and the various companies are working on several projects in different sections which are divided into ‘blocks’.

Exploration in the sea had been limited and sporadic until 2012 when the huge Romanian well Domino-1 provided the largest discovery in the Black Sea to date; 84 billion cubic meters of gas, in the country’s block called Neptun.

Spurred on by this discovery, ExxonMobil teamed up with Austria’s OMV to join the exploration of Neptun. Together the companies built the Ocean Endeavour rig, which is drilling a well called Pelican South-1 wildcat in the hope of finding further hydrocarbon reserves. ExxonMobil is also planning to explore the smaller Teres block in the Bulgarian part of the sea, which so far hasn’t received much attention from companies.

He had over 150 guys in his unit. Now they have NLAWS and RPGs but lacked a sniper system until recently.

And we fought NW of Kiev. They were engaged at gostomel when I got there.

Wow. Interesting.

Maybe I missed it throughout this thread, but have you posted any stories / experiences from your time there?

If not, could you?  I'd be super interested to hear some first hand info.

Definitely not 1-1. Russians are attacking heavily defended and fortified areas with near 100% surveillance coverage. They fire a lot more shells but the UA actually hits a higher %. If you factor civi losses into the equation, Ukrainians are losing a lot of people but mil losses are a fraction of Russian ones, like 1/4 maybe 1/3 in areas where the Russians have coordinated combined arms attacks.

In some places I know the losses were 7-8 to 1 Nwest of Kyiv. The Russians literally got hammered there. Might even be 10-1 there. Unfortunately they also muttered thousands of civilians, probably 30k or more. Civilian losses have been greater than mil ones.
