It is branded; by the Kremlin. Basically everything you read on RT change it to ‘the Kremlin said x’. Then you have the proper perspective.

I'm guessing that it's at least partly because Crimea is important to them.

ETA: For someone that is supposed to be looking for a way out Putin sure as hell is dumping a lot of hardware and people into a small area.  If he just wanted to create a buffer zone I don't think he needs this much people and hardware, hell he's already got his buffer zone from 2014.  My uneducated opinion he's looking to take a large chunk out of Ukraine, either that or this will be the most expensive military parade in a while.

If you think about this... Russia cannot invade Ukraine if they are part of NATO without huge losses. It seems that
he can probably get away with it if he takes it now.

Russia and Belarus are about to launch exercises at the Ukrainian border starting thursday.

https://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/europe/ukraine-and-west-on-alert-for-start-of-major-russia-belarus-war-games-1.4798005

Russia and Belarus plan to launch major joint military exercises on Thursday close to the Ukrainian border, amid intense diplomacy to avert what some western capitals see as Kremlin preparations for a new potential invasion of Ukraine.

As part of a military build-up of more than 100,000 Russian soldiers to the north, south and east of Ukraine, Moscow has sent armoured vehicles, fighter jets and S-400 and Iskander missile systems into Belarus along with what Nato estimates to be 30,000 troops.

The concentration of forces near the Belarus-Ukraine frontier  which is just 150km from Kyiv  has focused the attention of major western intelligence services on whether Russia may plan to use its ally's territory to launch an attack on the Ukrainian capital.

Ukraine intends to hold its own 10-day drills to run in parallel with the Russia-Belarus exercises, taking place in border areas and including training with anti-tank weapons that Kyiv has received recently from the United States and Britain, and military drones bought from Turkey.

Russia says it is not planning a new invasion, but has also threatened to take "military-technical" steps if the West does not bar Ukraine and other eastern European countries from joining Nato, and the alliance does not withdraw its troops and weapons from the region  demands that the US and other major Nato states have rejected.

Moscow is also demanding that Ukraine implement the Minsk accords on the war in its eastern Donbas region, which Kyiv signed in 2014 and 2015 under huge Russian military pressure, and which critics say would deeply undermine the country's sovereignty.

Senior government advisers from Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France will meet in Paris to discuss the conflict on Thursday, when British prime minister Boris Johnson will hold talks on the security crisis in Poland and his foreign minister Liz Truss will be in Moscow.

Diplomatic solution

Ms Truss said she would "urge Russia to pursue a diplomatic solution and make clear that another Russian invasion of a sovereign state would bring massive consequences for all involved".

"Russia should be in no doubt about the strength of our response. We have said many times that any further invasion would incur severe costs, including through a co-ordinated package of sanctions," she said.

Washington has vowed to inflict "massive" costs on Russia if it launches a new attack on Ukraine, where in 2014 it occupied Crimea and started its proxy war in Donbas.

After meeting German chancellor Olaf Scholz this week, US president Joe Biden said those measures would include ensuring that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline between Russia and Germany never became operational.

Mr Scholz hosted talks with French president Emmanuel Macron and Polish president Andrzej Duda on Tuesday evening, after which they jointly urged Russia "to de-escalate the situation at the Ukrainian border and engage in a meaningful dialogue on security on the European continent."

The US is now deploying 1,700 troops to Poland and 1,000 to Romania to bolster the region's security during the current crisis; the soldiers in Poland will prepare to help American citizens who flee to the country in the event of an attack on neighbouring Ukraine, unnamed US officials told Reuters.

With each passing day, Russia looks more and more like dogshit in the eyes of the rest of the world. I just saw the results of a new survey taken in Europe that actually shocked me a bit.

This sort of news should send shockwaves through the Kremlin. When European nations collectively approve (62% in favor) of going to war against Russia over Ukraine, you know the Russians have really fucked up. Just consider how much that average was pulled down by the more pussified European nations. And even 40+% of the people in those pussified nations think NATO should go to war with Russia if they invade Ukraine.

Russia better tread very carefully here. They aren't ten feet tall and bulletproof, no matter how much Putin tries to push his chest out for the cameras. They could easily bite off more than they can chew here. And if public opinion is already against them this much, imagine how bad it will get if they do invade and the death and destruction plays around the world on TV and their atrocities revealed to everyone? Russia would quickly surpass Iran and be fighting it out with North Korea to see who can be the most hated nation in the world.

Much is at stake here. Right now western nations are only talking sanctions. But politicians shift with the wind. If public opinion starts to shift toward direct action, things could go beyond sanctions and turn kinetic pretty fast. This is the danger Russia faces here. Once they jump, they won't necessarily be able to control where things go from there. They cannot be sure that sanctions are the only response they will face.

Two different questions in that survey. The 62% number is the average of all European responders who think NATO should intervene if Russia invades Ukraine. The other set of numbers shows what percentage of responders think their own nations should intervene militarily on behalf of Ukraine.

I honestly would have never expected either set of numbers to be so high. I mean we are talking about Europeans here. Hehe. But these numbers include responders from France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, etc. It isn't just Poland and the eastern Euro nations. But the Poles are certainly some committed bastards. Even when asked if their country specifically should come to the aid of Ukraine militarily if Russia invades, 65% answered in the affirmative! My respect for Poles grows more and more each day. They are some truly ballsy motherfuckers!

Meanwhile there has been no invasion and the Biden Government is sending Kamala Harris to Security Conference talks in Munich to be held between 18th - 20th Feb.

The invasion that could happen any day, checks calendar, unlikely to happen for another 10+ days.

Meanwhile in other happenings Putin offers to withdraw troops from Belorussia, lol checks notes, because an invasion through the Pripet marshes would be a logistical challenge and was not the intention in the first place.  Maskirovka. Then again the Ardennes were very difficult too.  :)

Threatening nuclear de-escalation in response to Crimea being invaded is kind of silly. There have been no moves by anyone to take Crimea by force, except for that 2014 incident. Thinks every proposal the Russians sent NATO are achievable.. This guy is just fucking about before invading Ukraine (fully).

Did they say they were leaving Belarus after their exercise and selling them the equipment after they're done?

Swear I read that.

Of course that doesn't account for the other troops and gear.

Bet he takes eastern Ukraine to connect Crimea. Which might be why he's pushing for not allowing Ukraine to join NATO after. They'd no longer be a contested country or whatever.

He either does nothing or takes a large part and leaves the rest. Don't think he could pull off the whole country.

Take this with a grain of salt, and it’s a week old, but the “analysts” in this Reuters article put the odds at:

Peaceful resolution - 60%
Limited invasion - 30%
Full scale invasion - 10%

From the examples shown there's only one country above 62%. I'm sure the Baltic states and Ukraine have similar numbers, but overall I find it difficult to believe.

Other than keeping the UK's exit out of the EU in play, he's been quite the disappointment.

All observable indicators seem to point that way.  More each day.  ESPECIALLY the silly meeting with Macron.

It's all about negotiation

"I expect we'll have this crisis with us, in various forms, for all of 2022, at least," Sushentsov said in the report.
He explained that the Kremlin's goal is not necessarily a full-scale attack on Ukraine, but to "keep the threat of war ever-present, and thus compel negotiations that Western officials have avoided until now."

Bingo.

I'm not sure what endstate Russia would negotiate for. They've successfully blocked Ukraine's entry to NATO for the foreseeable future. If the threat is NATO needs to leave Eastern Europe or we'll invade Ukraine, they must see the paradox of that situation. I'm not convinced Russia is negotiating in good faith. It feels more like a hostage situation.

Also, this:

Ruslan Pukhov, who runs the Moscow-based, privately-owned think tank, Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, said that the U.S. and NATO don’t understand the existential threat posed to Russia if Ukraine is offered NATO membership.

“The West just doesn’t understand how much this is a question of life or death for us,” Pukhov explained in the report. “Ukraine in NATO, from my point of view or Russia’s, would be the equivalent of nuclear war.”

Is a main Russian propaganda talking point and undermines the validity of the article.

Nobody likes to have their enemies on their border.

I maintain that Putin probably wants water for Crimea, the absorption of the breakaway republics, and a way to make NATO the next guy's problem.
