Fast iteration is what got us to from first orbit to the moon in under a decade.

SLS-style bloated projects that have 12,388 suppliers in 57 states that has to be perfect on the first try and simulated ad nauseum is why the thing hasn't flown after $25 billion and almost a decade of development in spite of having a fuckton of shuttle hand-me-downs.

Try pretty much 3 decades since inception. They just got the big boost to try to get it going under Artemis a decade ago. Before that it was for the cancelled Constellation. It has basically been a NASA works project for a lot of engineers entire careers.

If they need to, they'll just take it apart after the presentation and do what needs to be done.

This is a rough prototype, it weighs 200 tonnes empty... The production ones will weigh 120 tonnes empty.

The weight will come from higher tolerances.... They've built in a fuckton of margin because it's being built in a field by welders with duallies.

They'll test it, see where they can cut weight, build a new lighter one, test it, see where they can cut weight, build a new lighter one....

more exotic materials. the stainless they are using in the prototype is likely not what teh stainless that the actual vehicle will be made of.  etc etc

Most of the weight savings is just going to come from using thinner SS... It's purposely overbuilt. Lighter primary structure will make everything else lighter as well (wings, actuators, legs, etc.)

This is a "minimum viable product" to prove the concept.

They are going to be using a stainless that will allow for being thinner.  Its a different alloy.

I know what this is

When you see them saying that, tell them it is the first steps towards fixing earth. It will allow us to eventually do all of our mining resources off-world and even over time lose a small percentage of the population. All great for the planet.

also manufacturing.  There's no atmosphere to mess up on the Moon.  And on Mars any gases vented from manufacturing would be beneficial.

Move Mining to asteroids and refining & manufacturing to the Moon and Mars.  That along with the population to run such operations would significantly reduce pollution and over population on Earth.  No need for draconian enviro-wacko socialist evil dystopian controlling regulations.

This may have been posted, but I thought it was interesting. This will be the engine configuration, with 3 (smaller) Raptor bells tuned for the most efficiency in the atmosphere, and 3 larger ones with bells tuned for efficient space use.

Problem is, this is the second time he has done something like this where he has singled out Space X, while Boeing has received far more money and is much further behind and it is radio silence to them. Rumors are he has a nice cushy job lined up with Boeing after he leaves NASA as well.

Also, part of the reason they are behind is past goal post moving FROM NASA.

I didn't take that as singling out SpaceX, seeing how he called out the commercial crew program as a whole.  A case could be made that it's a bigger shot at Boeing (this it what your competitor is doing in addition to commercial crew, what's your excuse?).  But NASA really has no leg to stand on to complain about programs behind schedule and over budget.

I wouldn't take it that way either, if Boeing had been mentioned as well. I mean they are further behind and taking far far more taxpayer money to boot.
