Ive traveled many, many times to Thailand for business (lucky), and I behave myself (reasonably) when I'm there so my style may not be for you...

Chiang Mai is having tremendously bad air conditions now and will likely to have them until April.

Even the air quality in Bangkok is better. And agreed - stick with the Bangkok area. Take a trip down to Pattaya for fun.

When I was down by my old stomping grounds (down on Soi 8) last August, I noticed a distinct trend towards Middle Eastern and South Asian places moving in, with their clientele. Soi Cowboy was looking pretty tired, too, but then again I had SWMBO with me, so she wasn't interested in what I used to be interested in before I met her.

Some of it was filmed on Sukhumvit 7/1. It was fun to see my old haunts in the exterior scenes. As narrow as that street is, that had to be hell to shoot.

If you're into WW2 history take a day trip to Kanchanaburi and visit the war museum and the Bridge On the River Kwai. We were there last February and used Tour with Tong to get a private, personalized tour for the day with a guide. It was fairly inexpensive and well worth it.
If you're into the girls and bar scene there is Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy, they're within walking distance of each other. It was definitely an eye opener when my wife saw a hooker with her hands down an old mans pants while they negotiated a deal.

To be fair, most of the boxing is drunk tourists playfully bonking each other with oversized gloves and headgear. The fighters are served a fishbowl of alcoholic fruit punch with free refills. The rugby player and my son turned some drunken silliness into a raging case of “When Assholes Collide”, with each of them giving as good as they got.

Came to post the same thing. Kanchanaburi is a little less than two hours away from Bangkok. The "Hellfire Pass" Thai/Burma Death Railroad museum is another half hour or so past Kanchanaburi. All sobering places to visit.

I was there last week. Since you only have the weekends, and I only stayed in Bangkok one night so I don't know much about it, definitely go check out JJ Market on the weekend. We took the BTS there as its faster than tuktuk or car/bus. One thing I REALLY wish we had time for but didn't was to go on the Damnoen Saduak floating market tour. Go check it out for me

The travel agencies around Khao San Road offer all kinds of trips out of town, day trips and longer if you need any more ideas once in country. Also, when dining out at the little street stalls and restaurants, make sure to try lots of different things. Even if you don't like something or can't finish all the food, it's so cheap that you can try all kinds of food for dirt cheap.

The bad thing about Thailand is the 30 hours of travel time each way.

If your work is paying for the airfare you should see if they would allow you 1 or 2 weeks vacation there after your work and before you fly back home.

The later flight would not cost your employer any more money and you could use your vacation time, if you had any, to stay longer on your dime.

Two "chicks" at once?

If you want sleaze, Pattaya is the place to go. Take a bus from the Ekkamai bus station (take the skytrain there). Costs maybe US$4, takes two hours. Use one of the full-sized air-conditioned buses, don't go in a minivan; the minivans are packed in like sardines and the drivers are worked 20 hours a day (yay meth!); the accident rate is high and crashes are often fatal due to inability to escape the burning minivan.

It's cheap to fly to Vietnam or Singapore or KL. Also cheap to take a bus to go see Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

For shirts and suits, there are a shitload of tailors, especially near Nana Plaza. Paul Bespoke is a nice one.

Reclining Buddha is boring, Marble Temple is pretty. The river is filthy and I don't know why people like riding on it.

If you want to get some medical care while you're there, Bangkok Dusit, Bumrungrad, and Phyathai are all good for the medical tourism thing. If you have an emergency, likewise.

Be careful to follow the rules on the skytrain:

Don't try riding a scooter or motorcycle, don't rent a car. Thai drivers are insane, not to mention that they drive on the wrong side of the road. Well, actually, they drive on both sides of the road, so I guess neither side is really the wrong side. It's all optional, they're just lines, right?

If a tuk-tuk driver offers to take you someplace, don't go, they routinely take tourists out of the way to their friends with gem shops and tailor's shops, and pressure you to buy things. Same for the "free tours" that some hotels offer guests. I mean, you *can* go, you're just usually better off not.

There are a lot of rumors and allegations surrounding the high tourist death rate on Koh Tao. They're probably true.

This is when the Thais douse each other with water. Which you might think would be ok except that there are plenty of assholes who use filthy canal sewage water, resulting in people getting sick with some truly nasty infections.

Probably best to go visit Singapore that weekend.

It wasn't meant to be. I got a call Friday morning from our North American lead asking me if I wanted to go. I have wanderlust so I jumped at the chance but I have a very short time to plan. Humble brag would've been mentioning that I'm getting a first class ticket.

ETA: I hadn't thought about diving. I'm certified with probably 50 dives under my belt but I haven't been in about 15 years. I'll look into seeing if I can do a refresher while I'm there.

Le Meridien looks to be in the Silom area. Not personally very familiar with it. The Russian Embassy is out that way.

The infamous clubs are mostly in the Sukhumwit area. You can get there by Metro, though. It really is a scene you need to at least see once. You just might feel dirty afterward.

The Siam area is where I stayed last time I was there. It’s good for Western-style shopping. We had a clothes and grocery mission, primarily.

I don’t think you can go wrong in any of the areas the major hotel chains have properties. You can go a lot cheaper with an Asian branded hotel, though. You pay a premium for familiar brands.

Citadines, based out of Singapore, can really offer good deals. I think their hotels in Bangkok are all in the Sukhumvit area, though.

Sometimes the European brands, like Novotel or Ibis, offer great deals relative to the big American names.

The Holiday Inn Express in the Siam area is an incredible deal, but low in amenities and the breakfast sucks. Because of the free breakfast and brand, though, it can get just slam packed with Chinese tourists.
