Ok Faded may be right. The Black Sea boats are supposed to be the newest.
“The Russian Navy also moved forward in the late 2010s, with the construction of Project 636.3, an improved version of the Kilo class. The first-in-class was named Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (PPK) and was launched by the head of Admiralty Shipyard Alexander Buzakov on 28 March 2019, or some thirty months after commission.[1] By November 2019, six units had been built for the Black Sea Fleet and further boats were proposed, but not funded, for the Pacific and Baltic Fleets.[3]” |

Only ONE of the BSF kilos is from 1990 and the rest are all 2010+.

Rostov-on-Don is one of only six Kilo-class submarines that the Russian Black Sea Fleet possesses, and it has been frequently used to fire cruise missiles at Ukrainian cities. Ukraine doesn't have any known effective anti-submarine capabilities. The WSJ is a very reputable publication and I'm sure they employ people whose ability to interpret damage on satellite photos exceeds yours. It’s a big deal. It’s a straightforward conclusion. Denying it takes a remarkable effort. It requires one to ignore facts or create fiction. |

Update, 11:00 am PST: The latest satellite imagery from Sevastopol indicates that both the Kilo class submarine and the Ropucha class landing ship sustained severe damage during the attack last night. Not only do the boats themselves appear to be burned-out, but the viability of the entire dry dock complex in which they were located now appears questionable. Let's just say that the likelihood of the submarine having only minor damage is very small. Based on the overall explosions that were seen, there was a lot of collateral damage to the area, not just the landing ship. To suggest that all the missiles hit the ship and none were targeted at the submarine (or that none hit the submarine) is specious at best. |
