I recently watched "So I'm a Spider, So What?".

Was the timeline developed by Quentin Tarantino?

I really enjoyed the first 2/3 or so of that one, but it went off the rails towards the end, IMO.

I think Pulp Fiction was more linear than this show was.

I did enjoy the rock show during the credits, though...

I’m in the middle of the final episode of the first season of Yuki Yuna is a Hero.

Wow, did that series unexpectedly ratchet up the intensity level to nearly the breaking point.

Not quite the mindless entertainment that I was seeking when I started watching it - the later episodes actually include a suicide-awareness / hotline viewer advisory, after all - but I’ve become a fan - I’m glad to have found the series and will definitely watch the follow-on offerings.

I absolutely enjoyed the otherworldly artwork, including the creativity that went into designing the ‘Vertex’ villains that relentlessly fight against the middle-school heroes - I was surprised but pleased to find that several of the battle scenes were actually pretty chilling, with the fiendish Vertex entities radiating an almost palpable aura of malevolence (in spite of my initial impression that their appearances were too cartoonish - that impression was dispelled over time as it became clear that they were driven by a dangerous level of intelligence and cunning).

I'm still trying to learn the difference between genres.

How would you classify anime like "Grimoire of Zero" or "Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon?"? Are they just considered Fantasy Adventure, or is there a specific name for the genre?

Guessing the subject of an anime based solely on the title seems like a losing proposition...

Well... what HAVE you seen?

I'd have a hard time remembering their names and listing them all out, which is why I figured listing your favorites would be easier.

Here are some of my favorites so far:

KonoSuba
Kemono Michi
How Not to Summon a Demon Lord
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Overlord
Log Horizon
Bofuri
Arifureta
Re:Zero

If I were to rank them, I definitely prefer the comedy of KonoSuba over the darkness of Re:Zero.

I also enjoyed Grimoire of Zero, and would like to find more shows like that.

I'm still a complete noob when it comes to anime in general, so any and all help is appreciated.

I liked Familiar of Zero enough that I bought the entire series on Blu-ray.  In another world with my smartphone is also pretty good. I forgot to add Cautious Hero to the list I posted. I thought it was really funny but a lot of it would depend on what kind of humor you find funny.

Shield hero is on the darker side, but not re:Zero dark.

I would say now is a good time to watch it since the next season is so close.

I thought about making an argument against this but then realized I can't think of a single thing wrong with your statement.  Unless something like Monster Musume is at the top. Then it's acceptable to watch that first in my opinion.

Keep in mind: I’m not not saying Smartphone is a masterpiece or anything, but for a trashy Isekai I thought it was entertaining.

As far as Familiar of Zero: I threw in the towel on episode 2 or 3.  It was something about a guy getting summoned to be some girl’s “familiar” and he’s basically treated like a slave.  Really not by cup of tea, but some guys here are very much into the “cute anime girl treats the male MC like shit” genre.  YMMV.  I’m sure one of our resident masochists will be along shortly to explain how I got it all wrong, it gets better, etc.

I laughed so hard at that show because that's how I play video games. I spend hours grinding levels so when I fight a boss it's easy. I also don't play many video games so taking my time is no big deal.

That must come later in the LN/manga because it damn sure wasn’t in S1 of the anime.

Princess Connect is more konosuba-ish as far as tone goes.

It’s an isekai only people can go back and forth.

Honestly, you should probably bump that to the top of your isekai list.  Very good dub for it too.

Is that really an isekai? I thought it all took place in the same world/timeframe/universe.

Still a fantastic show regardless of genre.

That story would have been so much better without the human scenes.  Just Aoi playing the spider leveling up inthe dungeons.

The Familiar of Zero
The Dungeon Of Black Company

Some old and new in that list. More Shield Hero coming in April

Edit: I forgot to focus on comedy.

I was late adding How Not To Summon a Demon Lord to the list, but it was definitely one of my favorites so far!

Shield Hero and Familiar of Zero were at the top of my watch list, so I'm glad to see them get some nominations.

It really is a gamble just picking titles at random.
Shield hero is on the darker side, but not re:Zero dark.

I would say now is a good time to watch it since the next season is so close.

Has one of the best paybacks I've ever seen.

That must come later in the LN/manga because it damn sure wasn't in S1 of the anime.
You are just upset because it wasn't "wholesome" enough for you.

Fuckin' A.  It felt like Aoi was barely even on the show down the homestretch.  Some shows can get away with that.  Consider Aoi was, IMO, the only interesting character this damn sure wasn't one of them.

Sorry, but Malty S Melromarc is not underage nor is she homeless and desperate for a place to live so the kind of "wholesomeness" some of y'all are into wouldn't be applicable.

I would have settled for a quick death, but, before that happened, having done to her what she falsely claimed Naofumi did does have a certain poetry to it.

The manga has amazing art work of scary monsters, and occasional fan service.

The anime has good artwork of scary monsters, and gratuitous fanservice.

The story is really good so far.

At the pace the mangaka is putting out, you are probably not going to see season 2 of the anime until 2024.

ETA: Miko's VA (her real VA, not the imposter) is also going to be the lead heroine in Yofukashi No Uta. She doesn't stand out much in Mieruko Chan but in the PV for YNU...awww man, she is capable of sounding super sultry.

True, but the twist is what caught me off guard. That's what made it great.

Overlord had one of the most interesting character development arcs, in my opinion. Watching Ainz become more and more ruthless was a sight to behold.
