I'll have to throw the Mk6 on the Mod Holland and see where it comes in at, I'd bet it's closing in on 10#

This one is just over 8 without the can and just over 9 with it. Don't see how I could save much more weight.
Kinda want a bipod for it but don't really feel like adding another pound.

The bipod def adds some heft. Its gotta be over 1lb. I need a weight with no bipod on it. Should be around 8ish.

Recce: An Interpretive Dance, by Augee -

The "story" is -

A seasoned NSW cat gets issued a new MK 12 MOD 1 from NSWC-Crane, but is dissatisfied with the length and weight.  He initially tries to use it with a collapsible stock, but it still doesn't do the trick, so he instead decides to drop an assaulter's M4A1 upper on the MK 12 lower, so he can keep the fixed stock and two-stage match trigger, but with a lighter and shorter upper, along with the MK 12's bipod, and a 4XDOS PIP (TA01NSN with JPoint).

Eventually, he thinks, I'll get a 16" SS Match barrel put on it, and maybe pull the TS-30 off the MK 12, too...

Okay... so, really it's just a kit-bash/mock-up of my incomplete MRE M4A1 and MK 12 SPR clones, but it sounds like a plausible story.

Plus, since neither of them are really that close to completion, I think I may keep this one "as is" for a little while.  Depending on how things go (I'd love to be able to get my hands on another MRE, but that might be a little bit of a long-shot...) I'm considering whether or not to build this MRE into a more "CQB" configuration with an EOTech 551, or go "all the way" on the "Recce," and get a Lilja 16" M4 barrel for it and run a Leupold MK4 2.5-8 on it.  I do have a prototype B. E. Meyers flash suppressor that works as a suppressor host for the NT4... though I'd need to unpin the current barrel to install the MRE on a new barrel - I figure fifteen minutes with a Dremel will be no problem if I decide to spend $400+ on a barrel.

Regardless which direction I go - I will be needing an AN/PEQ-2, though.

Yeah SR-15, it's right at 6lbs without an optic.  I don't think I have any pics of it with the leupold but here it is with an acog.  I'm still searching for the perfect optic for it, I have an eotech that is easy enough to slap on and works for most everything but I've been searching for a setup that will work for everything 5.56 can do, imo what the "recce" concept is all about. I've got an eclan on the way which is what I had in mind since day one, I'm excited to do the pepsi challenge with the  Mk6 and elcan.

I had a chance to even up trade an SR15 in tan for my M1A scout I was selling.....I ALMOST did it.......almost.......I bought a Mtn bike and built my first AR15 with the funds instead. so close....but the Mtn bike is badass and tons of memories in Virginia with it, and that AR started the BRD in me that I had been holding off on for years.... so I guess I made the right choice :)

I still need to get my B-tube repro anodized, but the A is original.

Paging Augee... Let's break Kyle's rifle down.
PRi tube?

EOTech 551?

PEQ-2A?

Redi-Mag?

14.5" carbine barrel? Actually, it looks shorter.

No idea, he gets all the cool shit.  I'd be hesitant to call it not a recce, there is another picture of a bunch of delta guys from the early 90's, some have similar looking rifles with magnified optics. I'd say these were the beginning of the recce, and fit the definition as I see it.

Very true, I was only speaking in terms of optics. Hell, didn't Sawman have a similar setup with an OPS can? His didn't have the FSP cutout though.

Agreed on the optic disqualifying it as a recce.  I'm surprised nobody has cloned the Sawman recce yet, I think we determined its a 14.5' barrel with a 3rd model Ops suppressor, the tube isn't the fiberglass armalite, near as I can tell its an EAG aluminum FF tube.

I had ambitions of a hybrid between this and the Mod H with a 13.7" noveskee barrel, PRI tube and AE5 but right after I bought the barrel my plans of starting the long wait on the can came to an end when I found an Elcan SU-230 for sale.

Here is my mod h setup like a recce. Just a shade under 9.5lbs as pictured.

Why? That's not a recce he's carrying.

I guess that depends on how you're defining that.

From my perspective, he's just one optic choice away from having one.

Very true, I was only speaking in terms of optics. Hell, didn't Sawman have a similar setup with an OPS can? His didn't have the FSP cutout though.

I'm just posting stupid shit like you are. I don't know what your problem is, but let it go.

LAMB'S RIFLE IS NOT A RECCE. If you can't understand that, then I don't know what to say.

Following your logic, putting a RDS on a bolt gun makes it a CQB weapon.

I posted his rifle because it was an accurized M4 with FF tube early from the GWOT. Smart people could infer that a guy in Delta can and do switch out optics easily. Not sure why the picture made you so butthurt and angry about it.

Whole heartedly disagree, I think the "optic choice away from a recce" comment was spot on.  What does it take to be considered a recce in your mind?

Eta. This is the "Recce style rifle" thread after all.

I will refrain from posting anything else just in case my ass gets accused of doing something not RECCE-esque on my rifle.

Something with magnification I thought was a basic qualification for a recce, something the eotech on Lamb's rifle does not have. In my opinion, Lamb's rifle is just a "regular" assaulters rifle.

How about you tell me what the specs for a recce are.

I'm just curious what he thinks qualifies as a recce.  It's not like the Mk12 or Mk18 where 99% of the time it's easy to tell if something is going to fly or not. On one hand recce is a loosely defined concept on the other there is a narrow list of examples that are true recce rifles.  This thread is titled "Recce style rifles" so I feel that gives everyone some lee way, there has been a ton of great info about true "Recce rifles" in this thread as well as plenty of people posting pictures of what they deem Recces.

The Kyle Lamb rifle in question fits what I think of as a Recce and comes from a time when the Recce concept was coming into fruition in the US mil. There was never a contract for Recce rifles, no TDP for manufactures to follow, it was done on a small scale with whatever was available/ able to be sourced.

The picture of Kyle Lamb was from the early 90's when most solders had 20" muskets with fixed carry handles.  Taking an M4 or 727 or whatever the equivalent was at the time and accruizing it with a FF tube, and some way of mounting an optic is where the Recce started IMO. I have to see if I can find the picture now but there are several rifles like the one Kyle Lamb is pictured with and some have magnified optics.

To me just because a rifle doesn't have a magnified optic or 1-x variable on it at the time doesn't disqualify it form being a Recce or worthy of mention in this thread.

This poor thread dun gone full retard.

Just my .02 here, but the Recce rifle (as interpreted by ARFCOM) has been pretty well hammered out and a magnified optic is a must. It'd be kinda hard to "recce" with a red dot.

Like I said in my other post I think the picture of Kyle Lamb's rifle comes from a time when the thought of accruizing the M16/M4/RO727/whatever AR was coming to bear.  To me just because that particular picture features an eotech does't make the rifle not a recce.  A lot of effort was put into free floating that rifle and I can only assume the primary reason was to improve accuracy, not something I think would be done to a regular assaulters rifle at the time.  My initial comment was in response to the post about it being an optic choice away from being a recce, I think thats factual.  You are the one who started in with the all caps talking about posting "stupid shit" and refused to entertain the idea of discussing the rifle.  Judging by your sigline I'd imagine you like stirring the pot for no particle reason, if you say a magnified optic is the criteria here you go, basically the same rifle from the same time, compete with magnified optic, previously posted in this thread.

For me it's hard to call it one way or the other. If magnification is the factor, if his rifle had a magnifier (if they were even around back then) behind the EOTech, can you call it a recce? I think the best way i could call that weapon is a recce with a recce incorrect optic.

. . . which is an almost identical rifle to Kyle's with an optic change.

Funny how that works and thanks for the pic, mblades.
