Basically. I built the shelf using MDF sizing it so it will clear the opening when it is swung. The hinge is two dowels and there are four swivel casters on the bottom of the shelf. Incoming paint diagram.

Shelf is in blue, opening is in black. There are probably easier and better ways of doing it but this is just how mine came together.

What would be a good flooring material?  I was thinking about the pergo flooring.  Not sure how it would hold up to a spill of solvant or something.  I have a blank slate in my basemeny 10x16 room.

I just redid a basement room using DriCore tiles for the subfloor, and a Pergo type floor from the local home improvement store.  It was on clearence. The DriCore tiles are expensive, but I fugured why not do it right the first time.  The install was pretty easy,  just measure twice, and cut once.

Here is my gun room - I built it mainly to house my C&R/historical firearms collection and of course a few token AR's

Melbourne,

Is the door a vault door?  Is it reinforced?  What about the walls?

You have a very nice collection.

Thanks, just a regular metal security door - there are two, I framed a double 2x4 setup with chain link for the walls not backed to concrete.  I wouldn't call it secure but I have multiple layers of security in my home.  Most of my modern rifles and all my handguns are in my safes.

Here are some pictures I found while researching for my future walk in concrete gun vault.  There are about 100 in the album so I'll just link to that.  I can't access the link from work so if it's broken, I'll fix it when I get home.  http://www.pbase.com/loggah/the_vault

It's similar to THIS but it looks like they just used zip ties to hang the guns in the movie.

Below are pictures of the process of converting a walk in attic closet to my very own gun room.  In it's current state I have the capacity for 20 pistols, 11 shotguns, and 3 AR's to be displayed.  I am very happy with the finished product.

Cajun,
Tell me about the dowels.  What size, how strong, what calibers will they work with?
Link Posted: 2/17/2011 3:41:59 PM EDT
[#48]
I used 5/16 dowel for hanging the 380's/9mm's and 7/16 for the .45 ACP's.  Drilled into the 4x4 1.25" and left 4.25" extended out of 4x4.  The two dowels at the top are only 3" long and are for the pocket pistols.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

This is not what is in that pic, but this is what I used:

Expandable Weapon Racks

Bob Stone was the sales guy, and they were good to work with.  Not cheap, but I'll never break them or need to replace anything.  I did an entire walk-in closet and I couldn't be happier with it.

Here's a part of it:
