The double D’s are for Double Dose of Destructive Doom.

Either the ammo is where all the paperwork lies or my gun budget is about to take a hit. I've wondered for a while about the non-fixed ammo clause for DD's was worth exploring, though not with the current ATF.

The case straight from harborfreight and what looks like a ziptie holding the round together makes me both nervous and intrigued.

Well, how's the launcher not a DD?

lol Yes, except Brandon Herrera. They just paid Ride Tanks for the ability to shoot real factory RPG 7 trainer grenades.

Edit:

That said, this might take an interesting turn, the round used in that incident that ended up exploding Adam from Ballistic Highspeed was from them, tho not sure who the launcher belonged to, or who did the work on it. Might lead to legal issues, depending how Adam feels going forward.

I too was amused by the Harbor Freight connection.

I would love to know more.  My guess is that it is incompatible with RPG ammo for existing models considered DDs and uses non-fixed ammunition proprietary to this model and that if desired, ammo that is itself a DD can be had, but the launcher is not in and of itself a DD.

Look, @Ben

I just got a surplus Hmmwv, goddamned it. Why are you making this known now? Now I'm going to have to redirect funds to getting one and trying to get them written into the rule set of Run and Gun matches down here. Killing me, man.

Ok, it ships as a Title 1 w/ the inability to do anything, less than a 37mm smoothbore grenade launcher.

You file the Form 1 for a DD, wait, then cut a slot in the muzzle for the round to index on.

Each live round is likely still a DD in inself & would require a Federally licensed magazine, no, OP?

Good option for CA.  DDs here are much easier to get than most other NFA stuff but something like this would likely still require the lower-level DD permit.  You can buy this until you meet the conditions for the permit (storage related) and get one and then go for the stamp and convert it.  Also avoids needing an SOT for the transfer, as very, very few of the SOTs in CA will deal with ordinary folk.

Are they not DDs by having under a 1/2 oz of explosives or is it something else?

I would love to see someone make rifle grenades for the public, both something like what you describe and full-blown DDs, because then the rifle can become the launcher and is Title 1.  I have four rifles that can be used to launch NATO spec rifle grenades myself.

A non-DD 40mm round with a 1/4oz bursting charge and fragmentation for hog hunting is going to be available soon. It will likely have something like a 15'   expected casualty radius.

Interesting.  6-pdrs used a 3.67" ball which in the case of Shrapnel/case shot would be filled with iron balls outside of the explosive center.

A lot of the AP rifle grenades are narrower, but longer than a 40mm grenade (HEDP are usually close in diameter, though).  I wonder if something cool could be made for launching from rifles with 22mm spigots.  I also wonder what kind of penetrating warhead, if any, is possible with 1/4 oz.

So a warhead could be filled with Tannerite, and the tip of the warhead could have a backwards facing blasting cap, so the impact of the warhead against anything would set-off the blasting cap, daisy-chaining the Tannerite

Can we get PSA to mass produce this, maybe get them down to like $600?

Also, can this workaround be applied to under barrel grenade launchers? A GP25 and M203  would make life worth living.

Black powder, muzzleloading, non fixed ammo?

Edit: yea, I think this is it (if not it should be). Have the "booster" separated from the "warhead". Load booster, load warhead. RPG2 boosters are black powder. You basically have a smooth bore muzzleloading cannon, same legality as a bowling ball mortar.

Ammunition for this is not available in commercial channels (never was) and it was never officially adopted by anyone:

I see zero reason why you couldn’t build as many of these as you want.
