It is a perfectly acceptable and useful caliber...just like most of them.  The only people who have a problem with it are people too emotionally invested in their caliber choice or who soak up internet gun and caliber memes like first time shooters.

You don't think the AWB gave a boost to those calibers? Everyone was trying to maximize the biggest bullet they could get into a 10 round capacity gun. If not for the AWB the 9mm would have rolled all over every other caliber like it's doing now post AWB. Nobody gives a shit about .40 or .45 anymore. They are the manual transmission of calibers.

.45 is .45 for a REASON.

It knocks dicks in the dirt.  It stops bad guys DEAD.

9mm is a pussy caliber, for European pussies.

.40 is the dyke of cartridges.

.45 has been living off a one hundred year old hype train. The only reason .40 or .45 are still relevant is the AWB.

I like .40S&W simply because I bought a police-trade in G23 for a very good price about 20yrs ago and have shot the shit out of it since.  I realize it does nothing that a good 9mm can't do, but I've got tens of thousands of rounds of .40 in my collection and I've learned to shoot it pretty well.

If I'd gotten the same deal on a G19 back then, I'd probably say the same for 9mm.

That being said, I carry a 10mm as my EDC and have done so for a over a decade. Nice to share projectiles between two calibers.  Probably why I like .260Rem and 6.5x55 so much.

Working in the retail firearms business, 9mm pistols outsell .40 at least 15:1. .45's outsell .40's probably 5:1. Nobody really wants .40 anymore.

I like .40

It's the easiest caliber of the major 3 pistol calibers to find during a panic

Cheap LE trade ins are all over the place in the used market

It's a good training round, because if you are getting good groups with .40, on qual you'll get even better groups with 9mm.

People say that shot placement is king.

Other people say larger is better.

Many people say capacity is best.

To each their own.  I'm fairly confident all of them will fuck you up in some capacity.  I've got 4 scars to remind me of the potential "stopping power" of what I considered pussy rounds.

I only have one, a USP Compact, but it is a nice middle ground for me when I want to carry something bigger than a 9mm, but don't feel like lugging around a .45. Primarily that means hiking.

Also nice to have during panics, because .40 ammo was everywhere. I'll pick up a trade in G23 someday.

But...... how does the fact that your friends are getting out of the caliber convince you that it's going to be around for a while? Seems it should do the opposite. Some of you guys are almost literally religious about this caliber.

I've got a 40SW barrel for my Glock 20. Even in a large frame gun designed from the ground up to handle 10mm, it still has oddly significant recoil - and I LIKE shooting 10mm.

I'm looking forward to playing with .357SIG though. That seems like a a very good do-it-all cartridge...on paper.

.357 Sig is the best 9mm.

10mm is the Dirty Harry of automatics

.40 is the American double stack.

.38 Super is the Americanized 9mm

.45 makes for an excellent offensive pistol cartridge.

9mm is an excellent defensive double stack and is the magnum .380

.380 is the Labrador of cartridges, always there with you, not much of a bite but I still don't want to get bit.

No thanks.  .40 is too loud and the recoil is too sharp.

Why?

9mm and .45 cap are both better, IMHO.

True.  That's why I got rid of my .40 HiPower.  Also the Keltec Sub2000 shares the same recoil spring between 9/40.  I hear they are making heavier bolts, etc on the aftermarket to compensate.

Here is a dirty little secret:

Unless you are shooting at someone in body armor (primarily LEO's) the mass of the bullet matters most.

Sure, velocity matters, you don't want slingshot velocity.

But a big ol .45 slug will put your target on his ass better than anything lighter.

PERIOD.

No, .40 S&W is a compromise, and like most compromises it sucks. It's not big/powerful enough to satisfy .45 ACP & 10mm guys, and doesn't really perform much, if any better than 9mm Luger.

My Cougar choice now alleviates the desire for the .40 Hi-Power.
Also placing my Beretta 96's as a viable back-up.

Next, as the 1911 is 'THE PISTOL OF PISTOLS',  giving me a new champion of the .40.

Or, maybe a Desert Eagle variant of the CZ75 with the Walther/Beretta slide-mounted saefty for operational familiarity.
