I had one I ordered out of the back of a magazine (forget which one). I broke the compass when for whatever reason I tried to use it as a throwing knife and it hit the tree compass first

Well, I suppose its better then a moderately sharp point stick That is a 10 year old boy's master key to destructionville. The old ones even had matches. A better toy was never made! I pounded in quite a few tent stakes with the compass, pruned my mothers rosebush with the saw and used the matches to melt some army guys and model planes. After I destroyed my mom's bush I never saw that knife again. http://i61.tinypic.com/vi0hfd.jpg |

Remember me and my brother having them on our belts riding around town on bikes. Miss those days!

Every kid I knew in the 80's had an official hollow handle knife with survival kit. It was the red Ryder b b gun of our generation. I personally carried 2 in the woods. One on a g.i pistol belt and the other carried on the shoulder strap of the l.b.e suspenders I wore to hold up the pistol belt. Handle down just like in the movie the green berets.

Or you could pick up a nice Vietnam era Randall 18 on an eBay Buy-It-Now for $1525.

I have the 80's and Rambo to thank for my Gerber BMF and LMF knives. Still have them in mint condition and picked up a used BMF on Ebay to use for camping. The BMF's and sheaths with compass and sharpening stone are great in my opinion. Not sure why Gerber quit making them, guess they couldn't compete with the magazine ad versions.

Funny during that big knife craze is when the US switched to the M9 I remember those days I had my share of Rambo knock offs, back then the cheap knives were still made in the US!

He doesn't make the hollow handle knives anymore because the guy in South Africa who made his custom A2 steel billets retired. |

I wish I'd bought one of the real Buck Buckmaster knives back in the day. (See history here
I had seen one back then and they wanted "big" bucks for it (no pun intended). Decided it was too much money - and it was a stupid decision. You had everything you needed in a survival knife and the propaganda at the time claimed you could rappel with it. Perfect for Tier 1 pretendos. |

Yes! I threw mine in the woods when the cops were chasing me in 84

I'll take my Cold Steel Recon Tanto over the #184 any day. |

Lol, I'm sure they've always been around....14 bucks for a knife with no tang...that's gotta be quality. View Quote That's a feature. It slips over the end of a stick to make a spear. Where do you get the stick? From a tree felled by the little key-ring chainsaw and shaped by the serrations on the blade's spine. |

I saw the commercial as well. Sounded like Dave Canterbury narrating the commercial. IDK just my two cents.
