Any geologists, why is fresh lava always black, when igneous rock of any significant age spans the range of colors? I'm assuming it is, because I've never seen any that wasn't. Are there lava deposits that are other than black or very dark gray when they cool somewhere?

Because it's burnt.

But really I have no idea why.

Do we even plan for amphibious landings on a large scale? Could we even for real if we even did? Do we even have the landing craft? Cirrously. It seems like a non starter. And if we don't and couldn't, then what are the amtraks for?

I think all of those are in private hands now. Fun fact they used the brakes from Buick cars which was handy because we had some at the shop when one was brought in.

My guess

Because of the iron.  Older lava fields has a reddish color to them.

Most of the rocks that are colored are sedimentary... or were baked and compressed as in Metamorphic rock.

rocks, metals... most solids really have a crystal structure.  This structure can be changed by how fast you cool it and can result in different mechanical properties as well as visual changes.

And then there's the chemical make up of the substance to consider.  Basalt type lavas have different chemical make ups to say... Andesite.

I'm not a geologist but the field does interest me.  I gave serious consideration to going to Hawaii for college specifically for geology... I instead went elsewhere for aerospace engineering.

No, the Army does not have tracks in Hawaii.  I think the Marines may have a few at Kaneohe but they are not a player in the current volcano incident.  Plenty helicopters in the civilian and NG side to deal with the problems.

Some of you actually realize that Kure Atoll 1300+ Miles NW started where the hot spot is now..? Right.  400k+ years ago. The hot spot did not move. The Tectonic plate did !

Kure Atoll is 30 MILLION years old. Mauna Loa is 700k years, and has been above the ocean surface for around 400k years.

For comparison, Mt St Helens is around 40,000 years old, and the Columbia River Basalt Flows that make up much of the Pacific Northwest happened around 16 million years ago.

Klauea Volcano Summit

At 11:58 PM Local time, a short-lived explosion at from Halema'uma'u created an ash cloud that reached up to 10,000 ft asl and was carried southwest by the wind. Possible trace ash fall may have occurred along Highway 11.

Additional explosive events that could produce minor amounts of ashfall downwind are possible at any time. Volcanic gas emissions at the summit remain high.

For forecasts of where ash would fall if such an explosion occur, please consult the Ash3D model output here: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/activity_2018.html

Information on ash hazards and how to prepare for ashfall maybe found here: http://www.ivhhn.org/information#ash

Klauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

Eruption of lava and ground cracking in the area of Leilani Estates subdivision continues. A fast-moving pahoehoe lava flow that emerged from fissure 20 this afternoon continues to flow southeast. The flow has three main lobes. The easternmost is east of Pohoiki Road and is moving about 230 yards per hour. The westernmost of the lobes is near Malamaki Road and is moving at about 40 yards per hour. These rates may change with time and USGS crews are in the area to monitor flow advance. Other fissures remain weakly active and volcanic gas emissions remain elevated throughout the area downwind. Smoke from burning vegetation as lava flows advance is also contributing to poor air quality.

That makes sense. It's black iron (II) because it's hot and slowly oxidizes to reddish iron (III) oxide.

If the sides are sloughing off into the crater...that is bad. If the thing gets plugged up, the steam can build up until it blows all that shit outta the crater.

Cool video.
You should have seen the live feed last night.  The last four hours are still on youtube if you click on the last live feed link posted, although they don't show the crazy rivers or the new cinder cone forming, as towards the end the cameraman stopped moving the camera arouund.  Pretty crazy, especially given the sounds that the fissures make.

What part of 'Volcano' do they not understand?

It is a major part of the whole island.
All the way to the sea floor.

It is also well known to be a very active volcano.
Though most commonly in the caldera and identified paths to the ocean.

Lave tends to run downhill.

I did get to see some very tall lava fountains many years ago.

From the ground and air.

It was spectacular.
Many hundreds of feet high.
