I was there in the mid 90's on my 6th grade trip, at the time living on the island of lanai, went to the big island for 8 days and toured the whole island
a few miles from this is a neiborhood that got wiped out by lava, in the middle stands a street sign on a corner, no one man made objects can be identified in the area less than 10 miles is active lava flows amazing aspect of planet earth we are lucky enough to see, we went all over the island to the volcanos national park to where the lava flow meets the water etc and a lot of non volcano related stuff why on earth you would buy land, build a house and build a life so close to active lava flows is well past my understanding, Hawaii is not a state full of smart people at all, at least not from my 15 years living there |

with all this geothermal Hawaii Island still imports lots of oil to make electricity (43 percent,) makes you think that Obummer really cares about the environment.
it still could be used to boil water to make cheap pure water from sea water if nothing else. my thoughts are they should have been close to 100 percent for years now https://www.hawaiianelectric.com/clean-energy-hawaii/clean-energy-facts/about-our-fuel-mix https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geothermal_power_in_Iceland "Five major geothermal power plants exist in Iceland, which produce approximately 26.2% (2010)[2] of the nation's electricity. In addition, geothermal heating meets the heating and hot water requirements of approximately 87% of all buildings in Iceland. Apart from geothermal energy, 73.8% of the nation’s electricity is generated by hydro power,[3] and 0.1% from fossil fuels." |

In this thread, we learn who loves geology and who doesn't.
Hawaii isn't a subduction zone. There will be no blowing up. |

Those lava flows look like a good way of getting rid of trash.
Those lava flows hitting the ocean means the United States is getting bigger! |

It definitely had more juice.
The PGV 30Mw power plant is pretty close to the area that’s erupting. The loss would put a hurt on the islands generating total. |

now all you need is japan to have a 8.0 off the coast and get the entire state in a tsunami panic
went through 2 of 3 of those living there, rush down to the harbor when you hear the news yank the boat out and take it a few hundred feet above sea level, get to a good view of what might happen and wait |

We're cool. Our house is on the Hamakua coast so we have Mauna Kea between us and the lava. But, I'll be glad when the ground stops shaking every few minutes. Mahalo for asking! View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

I am a haole. Native Hawaiians hate haoles, discriminate against them, keep them out of government jobs, etc. No reason for me to give a fuck now. I don't care that their island is shaking and baking, they can deal with it. View Quote |
