I haven’t read this entire thread. If someone did it on purpose, yeah that’s pretty shitty. If it was an accident then it was an accident. The French people are willingly destroying their own culture through their importation of third-world migrants. The loss of a building is the least of their problems.

You can traverse Paris almost completely underground, hidden/forgotten are almost assured.

Nobody is frothing at the mouth, it's a reasonable assumption.

The investigation will be extensive. Just amazed that it went from potential construction related accident to construction related accident so quickly. Not surprised that possibility is what they led with and more details might shine light on why that was, but strange to me nonetheless.

The scaffolding does make construction/reconstruction related structure fire the most likely cause of we're guessing.

That said knowing what I know about the US, I'd be really surprised if they didn't have insane fire hazard rules with an abundance of safety. The kind of outfit that would secure a job like that would have to be squared away. If this was the cause I can't imagine then securing more work.

They also tend to do reconstruction projects in the same manner of the time in which a building was made.

This isnt angle grinder, welder, and plasma cutter free for alls.

Very sad day.

You are absolutely correct.  It will be roughly 80% concern and cogent thought and 20% inbred, crayon eater.  Maybe 75-25 but it's early.  Let's see where the day takes us.

And to those that think the incredibly stupid adage perpetually restated over time that the French will "surrender again," you have no clue what you are fucking talking about and should sit at the table in the corner and color while the adults talk.  The French government is NOT the French citizenry who are an incredibly proud people.  They are also less secular than we are here.  They will look at this as a tragic loss for France AND the faithful, especially during Holy Week.   IF and that's a mighty big IF, this turns out to be terrorism by any group including the Muslims, the French PEOPLE are going to take heads.

Oh my God this is terrible. This great cathedral has been standing for 850 years and we are now watching it be destroyed. This is just terrible.
Construction started almost a thousand years ago.

- Purgatory wasn't even defined when construction began.
- Genghis Kahn was one year old when construction began.
- The 3rd Crusade was 20 years after construction began.
- Manuscripts were still only used by monks. It would be another hundred years until manuscripts made their way into cities. France was actually one of the first.

This is a big loss
200 years to build, burned to the ground in less than a day
With the lifespan back then... think how many generations it took to build?

And built so well it's stood for another 8 and a half centuries.

This is a humongous loss

I was fortunate enough to see it in 2012. The hotel we were at was just down the street.

Holy fuck this is a major historical loss. Forget the religion aspect of it, this was a beautifully constructed building, the kind that makes you appreciate human innovation and art work. I grew up Catholic and now am non-denominational, this is going to really piss some French people off if it was arson, especially if it was ROP arson.

I hate seeing history like this being destroyed. This is a truly sad day.

You don't know much about Paris proper then. All the building codes and restrictions are put in place to preserve the landscape and historic fashion of the city. Ever notice there aren't any tall & modern buildings in the central arrondissements?

There's a boom on building new Catholic churches, or replacing shitty boomer '60s piles of crap, with ones that look old world European. Some of the stuff for them comes from stuff boomers ripped out, but there's still skills to build good looking older style stuff.

Even where I live we have helicopter assets to fight fire. Surely France must have brush or forest fires and equipment also. A bucket slung under a chopper with the river right there might have been able to do something before it was totally engulfed.
