If I've learned anything from my near twenty years here.
It's that being at work is the most important thing a person can do. PTO is for bad employees and socialists. |

So the CEO can’t manage his shit. I can see why no one replied.

I haven't had a vacation in 30 years that I wasn't emailed or called multiple times. I haven't traveled without a laptop in 20 years. I checked my email multiple times a night and all weekend long for 30 years. I'm retiring next week. It's going to be weird. Maybe my hair will grow back. Our CEO told senior staff that there is no reason why we can't respond to an email within 3 hours, 365 days a year. We had to buy a sat phone when one guy was going on a fishing trip to Alaska out of cell coverage for a week. He had to call in daily. I am so done.

Nothing says shitty leadership like when "hey everyone, we are all taking the holiday week off" turns into "this needs done on Christmas." I'm sure the CEO was hard at work..lol
Pretty sure I'd start looking for a new job if mine started some shit like that. |

You caught Covid and you still tried to work? I would have put up an OOO message and stayed in bed and or couch and enjoyed my holiday.

I took a few days off a while back to spend with the wife. We went camping, out of cell range. During a trip to town one of our department heads started blowing up my phone because he suddenly realized he didn't know how to do email and wanted me to cut my trip short. He had fired the guy who sent all of his emails for him a few days prior. I politely but firmly told him to fuck off. So he started blowing up my boss's phone with the same demands. The boss's secretary called me and told me to turn off my phone ASAP because I was about to get a call informing me that my vacation was not approved because a department head needed to be able to use his email and our "servers were down". That was kind of funny because we were on an Office 365 subscription and I was pretty sure Microsoft hadn't gone up in flames.
When I got back I was told from now on I had to get written approval from all department heads before scheduling time off and that any of them could cancel my leave at any time for any reason. That did not go well at all. But by that time I already knew I was leaving because management was becoming increasingly toxic by the day. They decided to out source my position and I was told I was as good as gone. Then they found out how much a contract for outsourcing all their IT was going to run and the decided to not do that. They didn't bother to tell me, though, because they felt the threat of imminent firing would "help motivate me". I've been out of that job for about a year now and management over there is still trying to pin something on me so they can punish me in some way. They've already tried to get me prosecuted once. I wound up having to block all their numbers because of the threatening phone calls and texts. Three of my co-workers have been prosecuted based on reports that were largely fictitious. I truly do not understand the mentality of today's management types. Do they teach stupid shit like this in those Sigma Six classes they kept raving about? |

Technically I work 7 days a week I have a horse ranch.
That being said I make sure and schedule time for myself and family. Today just a couple hours of work and the youngest and I plan on doing a little small game hunting and later on going to a friends house with the family. When I worked for someone one else I ignored emails and phone calls. If I was on vacation. If I was taking a day to do personnel stuff I would answer if my team called. However no way would I work on a real vacation. |

From what you wrote a few observations become apparent.
Your CEO is an asshole. Not the kind of asshole that is a "tough love" leader that gets things done but takes care of his people. No, he's just an asshole. You let this happen to you and the rest of the team, for the most part, didn't. Good on them and bad on you. The"team" is in the process of discussing this situation and what a bunch of assholes they work for with their inner circle. Many are going to start looking elsewhere for employment opportunities simply because their leadership is really stupid and can't be trusted. |

I once had a job that required two of us to be in plant over any holiday shut down. Had to pull fire watch and monitor the boilers and the anhydrous ammonia refrigeration systems. We rotated that duty through the maintenance crew, so six people over 3 shifts got stuck. Nobody want to work it over Thanksgiving or Christmas.
We usually just played cards with a walk through the back of the machinery rooms once an hour. |

The leadership "team" no longer exists.
I don't know if this is a generational difference or just a difference of perspectives that is very stark, but it comes down to whether a leader believes the goodwill of the team is guaranteed, or needs to be spent carefully. There's a difference between the rare "sorry, this is kind of a big deal and I could use your help even though you're on vacation" and "I want this to happen and I'm in charge, so do it". |

If the company wants people to work this week they need to toss everyone an extra week of vacation to use next year. I wouldn't have answered texts or emails and most likely would have gave my notice in January. OP you need more than 5 vacation days that you are still working on. Find something better. If your organization can't get what needs to be done in 2080 hours/yr/person (and more realistically 1800/yr/person with federal holidays, sick leave, and PTO), it means that leadership is incompetent or values its personnel very little. Probably both, and more if someone really had a look under the hood. Culturally, I'd say it's time to move on. |
