I spend a ton of time outside working in 100 degree plus temps. Never wore anything more than a ball cap and that is pretty much what I see everyone else wearing too.

I’ve had a couple palm straw ones for years, great sun hats out here. Also have a couple straw lifeguard beach hats in the rotation.

My western straw hats are all Resistol and they are great.
Go to your local western wear shop or feed store that sells clothing and look for a Resistol that you like and fits you. |

I legit saw a woman heading into Costco wearing one of those, but she appeared to have the heritage to pull off the look.

Quoted: Consider the Resitol line of straw hats. Very common in the Midwest, from Texas to the Dakotas with Ranchers and Rodeo. Many include a wicking sweatband, verses the standard leather headband in most cowboy style hats. HERE View Quote That does look nice and airy, but I feel like it might leave a fishnet sunburn on my bald head. |

There are lots of comments regarding "looks".
I thought the question was more a matter of "function". I guess I am getting old enough to NGAF how I look. OP, from Washington, where is the "western US" on this tour? What kind of boots are you wearing? In summer, shorts too? |

Quoted: So the last thing I want to do in life is pull a douche move and look like Garth Brooks or something. But I swear I could pull this off. Howdy, y'all. View Quote Incidentally my wife and I have really good seats to a Garth Brooks concert this summer and we are going to have to get some big huge Stetson hats for the concert. |

Takes a brave man to wear a silhouette target for a hat. |

Resistol in the summer
Stetson in the winter If you are going to wear a hat with shorts or whatever else, don't pick a cowboy hat at all. |
|
I can't remember the make at Boot Barn the other day but they had a straw cowboy hat for $29 that seemed to be almost the level of quality of the Stetson version..... I believe it was American made as well but don't hold me to that.
It was a nice looking, quality made hat. Now, I am a mere chicken farmer with 10 laying hens, but I figure that that qualifies me more than most to wear a cowboy hat..... The hens are the only ones that see me wear though.... |

I bought a Charlie 1 Horse vaquero hat. Or something like that. I looked less dumb in that hat than the others. The palm leaf hats are supposed to be special somehow. I forget now. Cowboy hats are gay. I'm native born Texan, so i can say that.
If I'm going to be in broiling hot sun (I often do that), I do as i always have....remove fresh bandana from pocket, (wetting it with cool water is a nice option) remove my ball cap, drape bandana on head so that it shades ears and neck, secure it with ball cap. I always wear a ball cap and good, cotton bandanas cost about $2. Much cooler, lighter, more stationary than any straw cowboy hat. Learned this about age 13 while loading hay bales on a hot Texas summer. I do have a light straw brim hat, but it is for cutting the lawn. It is more sombrero than John Wayne. The only google image i could find, but this gal has it right: Attached File |

My dad wore a straw cowboy hat most of the time when I was younger. I don’t think I’ve earned the right to.
But I wear some version of one. Whether a boonie hat with the sides tied up or some other fabric version when the sun is out. I do have one leather cowboy hat but it needs replaced soon. A boonie hat does a decent job keeping the sun off. But you have skip the cool factor and drop the sides. |

I love my Real Deal Brazil Tarp Hat.

Go to a western store and have a hat fitted. Get stampede strings. It can get windy here.
If you are coming to New Mexico, go to O'Farrell's and get one here. It will cost more but you'll have decent souvenir. I have two hats that I wear. One is a cheap canvas hat for summer it has a huge brim and a Litefelt for winter. |

I wish cowboy hats were a thing around here. I love the look.
