Until we're ready to make the 141.76 million mile leap from the moon to Mars, setting up a base there is just a HUGE expense. so, not "because the government", but "because the taxpayer". 1969, tv's were black and white, phones had chords, most vehicles still had manual steering, windows and no a/c. We strapped 2 cowboys to a beer can with a small block 350 and launched then into orbit with nothing but a hope and prayer. They landed on some lunar rock, got out and played hopscotch. Then they got back into that beer can and returned safely back to earth 2 weeks later.

NASAs budgets was 2.7% of the US budget is 1969 and 100% of their funds was focused towards one thing, landing on the moon. It’s estimated that half a million people either directly or indirectly worked to make the moon landing possible.
In 2023 NASAs budget was 0.4%, and their moon efforts is a tiny percentage of their overall budget. I bet there isn’t more than a few hundred, maybe thousand people working on the moon program. It’s not an issue of if we can do it, we can, it’s the lack of desire. The space race was a very unique situation that will likely never happen again. If we go to the moon again in our life time it will require identifying a demand that the private sector can step in to make it happen. |

A good proportion of Americans have sunk to a Cargo Cult mentality.
They know how to work the trappings of modern day life, but they have no real understanding of the physical world made possible by the Technocrats and their machines. It’s not just stupid people either. They could be brilliant in Computer science, and clueless about the real world. Maybe it was always like that. In fact, I think it always was like that, but people didn’t blurt out random nonsense as much. People also didn’t talk to those outside of their category and class. |
