And, I'm in the opposite camp.  I had a SS 4 & 5/8" SBH twenty years ago and I'm about 87% sure mine had a fluted cylinder.

I'm a bit baffled by the increasing fashion of unfluted cylinders on DA revolvers.  You're just adding rotating mass to the DA trigger pull.

Marginally.  If it was significant, they would have never fluted magnum cylinders in the 1st place.  In SA, I don't care, the added mass isn't significant.  In DA, every little bit adds to the trigger pull.

It seems like the unfluted cylinders are on the "hunting" versions of revolvers, which are a lot less likely to be shot in double action.

I don't even think it adds marginal strength.  Extra material only helps where the strain due to hoop stress is high, which ain't where the fluting is.  The weak spot is on the outer part of the chamber, typically where the cylinder latch cut, or the "scallop" that leads to the cylinder latch cut is.

ETA, take a look at my custom Blackhawk cylinder.  It's unfluted, because fluting it would just add cost, and frankly, as much as it kicks, I don't mind the extra weight.  But you can see the "weak" spot is where the cylinder latch cut is, centered over the thin spot of the chamber on the stock cylinder.  On my custom cylinder, in addition to the walls being 50% thicker at the thinnest spot, Andy Horvath cut the cylinder latch notches and the lead in scallop shallower, making that part even stronger.  Loads well over "Blackhawk only max" .45 Colt still just fall out of the chamber.

I've tried several sets of Altamonts over the years and thought my examples were pretty crappy. Those look pretty nice though, especially that set on the right, well worth what you paid.

I like that ''little bit'' when you start getting up into the .454 Casull power range. There is a LOT of pressure in that cylinder [up to 65,000 PSI], far more then in many rifle chambers. Hell, it's more then many proof loads for rifles.

But it's in the wrong place.  It just makes you feel better.  The ways you make a cylinder stronger are:
- Increasing the OD, making the thin spot of the chamber wall thicker.
- Making the cylinder latch cut and scallop a little shallower, if it is over the thin spot of the chamber (common on 6 shot guns)
- Making it a 5 shot gun.

You'll notice that the .454's tend to have 5 shot cylinders.  That moves the cylinder latch cut and scallop away from the thin spot of the chamber (see below).  That does more to make a cylinder stronger than anything else.

This makes sense. On the 6 and larger chamber cylinders the wall between the chambers themselves also looks thinner than the wall between the chamber and the outside of the cylinder. Theres no free lunch. Strong, light, capacity : Pick 1
