Quoted: My 16 year old started digging a hole a few years ago in the backyard woods. I told him every few months to fill it back in but it never happened. So I told him a week ago that we may as well make it a foxhole. 1) Any advice on design? I’ve searched the internet and there are a lot of designs out there. 2) Any advice on what to use for sandbags? We have plenty of fill for them coming out of the hole. Yes, he’s using sandals to dig but it’s actually going well. There is a stream that separates me from my neighbor’s property. If you're intending to camo it (highly recommend), put things a bit away from it which will draw the eye of an observer away from the actual position. And, building up the side facing your house will prevent someone from jumping in and firing on you - and, it will help mask the movements of those in the hole, too. |

Maybe a cardboard insert to a 7.62mm ammo box. In infantry scool when the sergeant came around looking at the crew served fox holes, me being the shortest was always the person standing in the pit for scale, not my 6’ tall class mate. In the Marines we dug horse shoe shaped pits not the army style corner pedestal type. |

Our water table doesn't lend itself to fox holes unless its a very dry season.
Bagging a barn sniper hid could work though. My weird wife uses our barn for storage though. |

Any update on the foxhole OP?
I love stuff like this and want to see the progress. Plus I wanted to bump this for for others who have made one. Pics and tips would be cool |

OP, would you say that the watercourse that marks your property line is more of a stream, or brook?
Is it possible that the location of the boys field fortification might be positioned to view said flowing water and adjacent activities? |

How does your son feel about hiking, mountain climbing, boating, and shooting? I'll post some good stuff later when I'm on a computer. @Ben I will post more later. He’s physically fit and I did contact the NH APC chapter a while back but I don’t know what happened as I don’t recall getting anything more than a confirmation they received my email, and I haven’t tried contacting them again. He is a great hiker, loves guns and we canoe. He is 16. My 14 y/o is not as motivated but he’s getting there. I actually do more with him outdoors. I am reading every post and will get back to commenting on the responses. A quick question regarding access: Is the part in yellow an area where I can put steps to get into the “foxhole”? It’s a bitch to get in and out. My plan would be to ring the MG pit (if that’s what this ends up as) with sandbags. I also think that this is turning out more as a machine gun pit rather than a foxhole, and the design is changing accordingly. I want to put the soil into sandbags and they arrived so I am going to have both sons fill them for now to clean up the area around the hole. I also bought a proper shovel and also a shovel to dig out the grenade sumps down to 2 feet, which will also help with water drainage. I take Russian Systema and both kids also take classes. I have a Cold Steel Russian shovel for them as well. My sensei has shown us how to use it as a weapon. More updates to come and I will quote and comment on responses that have asked for it. Thank you! |
