GX550 been registered since sometime in  2021 - unlike most of the visual in the fake renders, 550 been pretty sure for a couple years. . . But significance?

Lexus has broken the model number = displacement system, but 550 probably means it'll be at least optional with something bigger than the 2.4 I4T.

I like it because it is boxy and kinda looks like a modern 80 series.

The GX 460, while very capable and has a solid aftermarket, looks like a suburban mom grocery car in stock form. That new GX looks more like an off-road vehicle, which I figured is what they’d do with how the GX has exploded in popularity within the overland crowd the last 5–10 years.

Based on the 4th Gen Tacoma, we have a pretty good idea what the platform and drive train are going to be.

I think there's a pretty good chance these come standard with the hybrid engine.

Humphries teams hinted at this new off-road design language here

Also there will be close design elements with the Prado, so the evolution was towards the "box jeep" ethos.

Let's not get crazy. Credible and ultimately accurate are often different. TMMGT was producing the E210, until it wasn't, and then, it never did.

But I'm relatively confident and I occasionally develop good information

This is my take,

Highlander > Grand Highlander : 4Runner > Prado (250)  Many have questioned the viability given "minimal" differences

This gets Toyota a 7 seater to replace the 8 LC 200, continue the LC nameplate at a more acceptable cost. If I was a product planner, I could see this, but you'll need to be mindful with the naming/marketing.

Maybe you get something like this. All body on chassis GA-F, with similar (identical wheelbase) dimensions. The US market dev is no issue with GX me maybe this possibility baked in at design.

GX - Premium, V35A, 7 Seater
Prado (250) - Mid, T24A Hybrid Max, 7 Seater
4Runner - Value, T24A, 5 Seater

Problem's going to be if it's merely an engine differentiating, H > GH has small but significant size increase, along with the premium engine (Hybrid Max). You also have the GX so a Prado get sandwiched - which limits feature options and differentiation

Long as you're cool with a T25A i-Force Max, you may get a shot. Automotive News again yesterday fueled the speculation "Toyota Land Cruiser SUV could return to U.S. as revamped Prado". Lot of conditionals in the article tho. Normally the trademarking is the indication (and GX550 was registered in early '21)

I remember a VERY well respected Lexus technical trainer telling us about how Lexus got off the ground when dealers in California got their first LS400s. They literally wrote the playbook for how every modern dealership,  regardless of brand, tries to achieve maximum customer satisfaction and brand loyalty. Their goal was to elevate the new brand into the same category as the clearly established level of car and care  that Mercedes et all were in.

Lexus fought tooth and nail to ensure that owners were so well taken care of in both service and experience that the public would look at nothing but the Lexus "L" logo and have the same deference and view as someone would view the Mercedes, BMW or Audi logo.

Seeing current styling remove that L for a script Lexus font badge feels ugly to this former Master tech. And frankly, I feel like I left at the right time. It wasnt the same brand as it was when I started. The old guard entrusted to get Lexus where it got to was leaving and it was obvious to us grease monkeys.

GX470 has insane headroom, especially in the 2nd/3rd row. The GX460 has more than the 4Runner but it’s not as much as the 470 because the 3rd row collapses into the floor vs the 470 that fold to the side or can be removed altogether.

Ah! I see. Yes - I was aware there's no chance for a 300 in the US. I was referencing what we the new to US LC was going to be.

Do you think the new US LC will be a Yota badged GX?

I haven’t gotten a super clear answer on that. The LCP is probably gonna be a much more “utilitarian” version (think cloth seats and shit). Im told they shouldn’t be competing with each other and people will want to flock to the GX if that want that style and look. I’m sure we will hear more as the year goes on.

I doubt many will, most would have purchased it for the longevity which is inevitably compromised to some degree by the new engine's complexity.

That said, I'm glad to see them only offer ICE or hybrid and not an EV.
