I think these guys might know a thing or two, considering the story is on the US Army's 1st Infantry Division official website.

These quotes are from The Army Times:

"Monday night’s massive air assault hitting 22 targets across Syria was a historic operation that signals a new expansion of a war that is likely to last for years."

“You are seeing the beginning of a sustained campaign,” Mayville, in his capacity as the Joint Staff’s director of operations, told Pentagon reporters Tuesday.

Washington Times article.

I'm at a complete loss why they need a division headquarters and staff controlling this, much less being in country.  Won't it be SF training the locals?  Maybe UAV assets, HUMINT teams, and other MI?  So why does that require an infantry/armor division headquarters?

Because going against popular belief Iraq does posses some capable bn sized forces. What they are not great at is the larger picture, ie coordinating the movement, supplying the movement, etc, that take decades to teach. Sf isn't going to teach their operations center how to conduct division operations.

The only reason why you would need a division headquarters in Iraq is if you need an element capable of commanding, controlling and coordinating the actions of 2 or more brigade combat teams. Therefore we should assume regular army units will soon follow. You wouldn't need a regular army division headquarters to coordinate the activities of some special ops units there advising and acting as JTACs.

It's called 'mission creep'. And IIRC a bunch of guys around here were correctly calling it back when Fallujah fell back into AQI (later ISIL's) hands. I think some even earlier than that.

I'm sure throngs of libs will take to the streets in protest of us sending troops into Iraq to wage war against the noble people of the Middle East.

There will be 24 hour coverage by all the major media outlets with a revolving door of learned, left leaning pundits criticizing Obama's handling of the situation.

Pretty much nailed it there. Plus the Iraqi's are rank conscious, they are not going to listen to some ODA CPT or MSG to tell them how to I run brigade and division sized operations.

Plus add in the fact that Army divisions are the smallest element that can form a JTF HQ. That's what you need to control all the enablers that we're supplying them.

We have oil and we can get lean.  I'd rather pinch off their cash flow by stopping the trade.  There isn't a pipeline we can't cut or a harbor that we can't mine.  We can starve them.

Forgive me if this is a profoundly stupid question, but will air support be available from somewhere if these guys need help on the ground?

I don't know shit from Shinola when it comes to military operations (obviously), but I hope these troops get whatever support they need - and aren't left hung out to dry once The Boy King™ sees something shiny on the horizon to distract him

I'm not questioning the abilities of our military.  More doubting that decisions will be made with best security of the troops in mind.  If there are only 500 troops in country spread all over in smaller groups who will they rely on for security?  Will air assets be available at the discretion of the ground commander or will the white house have to authorize every time a soldier wants to flip the selector to auto?

They are sending troops to Erbil (Hawler) and Baghdad.

We have a consulate and embassy, respectively, in each city. They are also where we have intelligence HQ's and the most Western/US citizens.

Erbil, for example, has several universities with Western/American faculty members. Their semester restarts in October. That would certainly be a prime target. I imagine the prime purpose of the soldiers will be providing security for interests like these as to prevent a large-scale hostage situation.
