Had a buddy in highschool, had one with the view ports in the side, cragar SS wheels, and loud ass mufflers. However, this was in the early 2000s and it did not work as intended.

I heart this thread.
I heart vanning. OP wins one super precision. |

Good times van.
If the van was rocking.......don't come knocking. |

My dad had one and kept it running until the 90's. I still find it strange he sold it a few months before I got my drivers license.

When I hear "van", that's what I think of. I'm surprised they're not still popular, especially for road trips and such... |

The perfect vehicle for a teenager or young adult.
"Get a haircut, straighten up, fly right or I'll kick you out of my house". "Fine, I'll just live in my van". Living in a van down by the river didn't have the same cache then as it does today. I still see these things around, usually parked in driveways and carports. |

I cartwheeled the shit out of a shorty Dodge van once.
Didn't even spill my beer. |

I have a Uncle who had a van like that, was the thing back then.

I worked at 2 van conversion companies in the 70's. Saw load of shag vans go out.

I've told several people that if I was to win the lottery, that I will single-handedly bring back the custom van craze. I have 6 or 8 themes already dreamed up in my head. |

I had a 73 Vandura I used to haul my race bikes in. Loved every thing about the 70s.

One of the kids in my high school had wealthy parents who bought him a 280Z. He promptly totaled it so they bought another one which he also totaled. They got wise (?) and bought him a custom van. It was very cool but it didn't compensate for the fact that he was a dork any better than the 280Zs.
|
|
I didn't have one but a friend did - shag carpet and a custom mechanical light system that caused a series of lights to flash in a channel that ran from front to back of the van. But I did have a haircut like that and a cute blonde girlfriend. |

Like a picture she was layin' there
Moonlight dancin' off her hair She woke up and took me by the hand She's gonna love me in my Chevy van And that's all right with me |

View Quote I'll embed it. I can't believe it took that long for someone to post it up. I'll up the ante though with the movie "The Van". They blew the entire budget on about a minute worth of Danny Devito and that song. It's an awesomely bad watch if you can find it. Note that the movie is all the more comedically bad when you realize that they used a Dodge van with that song playing throughout the whole film. But hey, it had mag wheels. Four of 'em! Holy crap! The whole movie is on youtube! Give it a watch. |

Instead, I see yoots still driving around in Civics with fart-cans... Car guy I know says they are starting to come back. I dunno. I've been seeing a few more of them lately. Unfortunately, I think so many of them were killed off by the high scrap prices and cash for clunkers etc. that there just aren't many left. It's been forever since I've seen a nice Dodge Street Van. |

I recall taking all items off the middle console to get to the engine.
One died on me on the SF side of the Caldecott tunnel. Middle lane, afternoon traffic. Had it backed up for hours. Made the afternoon drive news. |

My long Econoline had brown long shag carpet, walls, ceiling and floor. Beige swivel captains chairs, stash hole right behind me for a pistol.
The "U" rear bench came with a table, ripped that out day one and went to see a neighbor who had a boat upholstery shop. He made me a full size bed, crush velvet on one side, pleather on the other a foot thick, $100. Closet, fridge, cheap gas and a bulletproof 300. Lots of parties, lots of memories. |

Fuck it, I love Vans. If it weren't so weird, I'd buy one right now. With the diamond shaped window in the back and the airbrushed logo. And all sorts of opium-den style lights inside.

One of the funniest moments I had while working volunteer on the Sheriff's Posse was one night back in the late 70's, we rolled into a fairly new development on patrol, it had some houses, and several cul-de-sacs with nothing built yet.
We noticed a "hippie" van at the end of one, and pulled up to it. My partner shined the light into the van, and a guy walked up from the rear and sat in the driver's seat. My partner asked him "What are you doing back here". At that same moment, a girl stuck her head between the front seats to look out, and without missing a beat, the guy pointed to the girl and said "Her". I lost it right then and there. Still laugh when I think about it. |
